Yesterday I was walking my cat. And I was ticcing all sorts of things, my tics have been really bad lately. Mainly swearing and sexual things, just how my tics are at the moment. I have Tourette’s, it’s just how I roll. Usually I suppress my tics because I’m terrified of offending people but the neurologist told me I should let them out as I get tired and get headaches if I suppress.

Anyway back to the point of this. I was down a path behind peoples gardens and I hear shut up and stop swearing it’s disgraceful, from a garden. I tic again and a gate opens and this woman storms out and starts shouting at me telling me I should be ashamed and shouldn’t utter those words in public. She was probably mid 40s, I’m mid 20s. I managed to get out I have Tourette’s and she replies saying tourettes doesn’t exist, it’s just an excuse for bad behaviour.

I’m gutted, I just started getting confidence going out in public, only this week I started going outside again due to my mental health issues.

AIBU for having Tourette’s.

I know I’m not but I feel like I am, especially when people like this come out of the wood work.

I'm so sorry you were abused OP. It's like shouting at a person on crutches for moving too slowly, or a deaf person for ignoring you.

Also, your cat is adorable, and clearly very chilled. If I tried to walk mine, I would have no skin left.

Runmybathforme · 13/01/2021 20:31

@Godimabitch

Well she's clearly a stupid bitch for saying tourette's doesn't exist.

I swear in public, it's a part of language and I don't believe there's anything wrong with it so long as it's not an actual derogatory term for a minority. Fuck is a brilliant word. I'd have looked at her like she had three heads and carried on what I was doing.

She wasn’t unreasonable to challenge you in the first place, I swear a lot, but not in public so others can hear, it sounds vile, and I would definitely call someone out if they were swearing when there were children around. However, she was a complete nob in her response to your explanation. Life must be so hard for you at times, without dealing with this kind of ignorance. You can’t help your condition, she can help being an old bag.
Crappyfridays7 · 13/01/2021 20:35

Sorry this happened to you. People can be so intolerant. Your cat is amazing what happens if they see a dog? My dog loved cats and wouldn’t have bothered but I know my mums isn’t keen.

I think it’s sad that this has knocked your confidence, I hope you can move past it and walk the legs of that lovely cat of yours

wombatsandaplant · 13/01/2021 20:47

My cat hasn’t actually come across a dog in public. But my dad has two dogs, one very enthusiastic and is so chilled around them. Not sure how the dog would react though.

First of all she is an idiot who should never have said what she said about how she thinks a perfectly valid condition does not exist.

And secondly if you were stood outside her house for half an hour, fairplay, but by the sounds of it you were just walking by. This woman needs to get a life.

PS your cat is stunning

thosetalesofunexpected · 13/01/2021 21:00

Hi Op
I can not stand people like this woman with Crap know it all, attitude,!
You explained to her about your Tourettes
And Thick woman still didn't get it.

(Don't let her get at you like that,
I know its easier to say, that.
Carry on going out with your Cat.

No wonder your mental health has taken a battering with Claustrophic Lockdowns and coming across Random people like that.

I would look at ways to improve your self esteem because of knock downs in life with people like her,

Thankfully Not everybody is like her !
There are far more people Out there, who are not Judgemental as her,who get it understand that some people have Toureettes.!

3JsMa · 13/01/2021 21:06

Ignore and continue doing whatever brings you pleasure.
Don't ever engage with aggressive, ignorant people, never try to explain your behaviour to someone like this old biddy.
Educated one will know without explanation, the dumb ones will remain aggressive despite explanation.
Enjoy your walks.Flowers

It's a shame that people can't mind their own business, that lady sounds like a royal twat. My nephew's verbal tics sound very different to normal speech, so I often don't understand why people think he's just shouting swear words, the diction is very different.

What an ignorant woman. I don't have a problem with bad language per se, but would initially be a bit shocked at hearing a random loud outburst, however, it would soon be fairly apparent to me that you had tourettes, and so it would be a non-issue.

Your cat looks brilliant! Years ago when I had cats I tried to put them on leads. One laid down on the floor and refused to budge. The other managed to escape houdini-like however tight I pulled the harness. They remained house cats!

Sneezein3s · 13/01/2021 21:50

YABU for walking your cat

shhsecretsquirrel · 13/01/2021 21:55

Ah, don't let it knock your confidence. Most rational people would have figured out it was a tic.

NothingIcando · 13/01/2021 22:46

Wtf. Who are the 15% who thinks shes unreasonable for havin tourette's?!Confused

alltoomuchrightnow · 13/01/2021 22:48

hey, I walk my cat! And I'm sweary.
My cat walks to heel, he doesn't need a leash, it's great. One of life's greatest joys (probably the only joy in these shitty times!)
