Hello fresh boxes?

Hi everyone

Just wondering if anyone here uses Hello Fresh for food and roughly is it more expensive?

I work 12 hour days, my husband works 7 days a week. We do cook fairly healthy and make our own sauces, use herbs and spices and veg etc but we are both bloody knackered and sometimes don't sit down to eat until gone 8:30pm (we both cook) and I'm wondering if this would make our lives a little easier.

We are not fussy eaters so menus wouldn't be a problem for us, roughly spend £80 a week on food and toiletries for breakfasts lunches and dinners.

Any opinions welcome.

Thank you x

I couldn't stretch to hello fresh after the free box, I did find it expensive.

I like simply cook, it's spice mixes / sauces and a quick recipe. Not too expensive and has added variety as we have got to try so many different things. If you are already making own spice blends etc you may not enjoy it as much though!

PinkPandaBear · 13/01/2021 15:11

I’m intrigued. How much is Hello Fresh, including postage, each week for two people? What was in your last box?

MsSquiz · 13/01/2021 15:16

I agree with PP's that Gousto is far better than Hello Fresh. The portions are better (even by enormous eater DH's standards!) and there seems better choice of recipes, including some Charlie Bigham Chuck in the oven ready meals.

Their customer service is excellent. I once had a recipe card missing and the emailed it over straight away and I once had an incorrect ingredient which they credited my account for. 2 mistakes in over 6 months of weekly boxes. This week they couldn't deliver our box on the usual day, but they told us in plenty of time and credited our account to apologise

Here's my referral code, if anyone wants to try it out: (40% of the first box and 30% of the first month)

I've used Hello Fresh since September and it's been the best decision I've made recently.

Takes all the fuss out of planning meals and actually saves me money I think because I'd buy random stuff and then it would spoil.

As a busy full time working single mum it's a life changer.

EuroTrashed · 13/01/2021 15:21

it's enormously more expensive as it has to cover the fantastic quantity of additional packaging as well as the delivery and all the printed boxes and recipe cards etc. You'll end up paying £15 for a meal for two that's a bit of mince, a tiny bag of rice and £1/ vegetables plus a single stock pot.
If you want more interesting ingredients, they charge extra.
Use their recipe cards for inspiration but do the shopping elsewhere. And only use the recipe cards for inspiration if you're a huge fan of mince and heavy carb based (ie cheap ingredient) meals.

wizzbangfizz · 13/01/2021 15:24

I'm really disappointed in hello fresh, they seem
Pork/beef mince heavy unless you pay a premium and have failed to deliver my order it is
Coming tomorrow
Instead of today!

speakout · 13/01/2021 15:25

The amount of packaging - especially plastic is quite disgusting.

Huge sealed bags of ice, plastic sachets- some contaiing just a teaspoon of soy sauce.

Number one reason that puts me off.

notanothertakeaway · 13/01/2021 15:26

We've used Hello Fresh and Gousto. Found them expensive and way too much packaging. I prefer Simply Cook. Send me a PM if you would like a discount code. If you sign up, then you and I both get a free box

notanothertakeaway · 13/01/2021 15:28

And I think Simply Cook recipes tend to be simpler too

Whiskysoda · 13/01/2021 15:29

I tried Gousto. Nothing wrong with the ingredients, the quality or the recipes but I quit as every single bloody thing is plastic wrapped. One bulb of garlic in plastic, one bunch of thyme in plastic, one tiny pot of yoghurt in a plastic tub inside a plastic bag and one meal that broke me was 14 individual pieces of plastic!

EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 13/01/2021 15:31

Just tried one of the links, went all the way to PayPal to set up subscription, clicked on this then it went back to Gousto page stating there was an error! Confused can’t get in touch with Gousto so no idea what’s happened!

marshmallowfluffy · 13/01/2021 15:31

It's pricier but saves time and mental hassle

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 13/01/2021 15:32

Watching with interest ... I'm usually happy to cook from scratch most nights and enjoy cooking but I reckon most people now are like me, missing the occasional meal out to break up the monotony of meal plan/shop/cook. I don't mind the odd take away but after a gall bladder attack Saturday evening just gone after fish and chips, I feel my body is warning me off such treats Confused

I fancy trying this or similar a few times so I can put anime meal together someone else has thought up/shopped for/measured out.

EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 13/01/2021 15:32

Hope the links are ok?

Pootle40 · 13/01/2021 15:33

Gousto is MUCH better

Butterfly44 · 13/01/2021 15:38

Yes have used Hello Fresh. True...Lots of packaging! Some recipes are time consuming so watch that as for what you order. We've had chicken missed once and they gave a voucher. The other thing I've noticed is close expiry dates on meats. If wanting to spread say 3 meals out in the week - sometimes they all finish 3 days after arrival which is annoying.

Movinghouseatlast · 13/01/2021 15:39

We use Mindful Chef, but it's the same concept. I love it! I HATE the packaging with a passion but then again I think everything is overpackaged.

It is expensive, but if you can afford it it is a great way to eat healthily. For me, lockdown means that I really don't want to go shopping very often and where I live it is difficult to get supermarket deliveries.

I also get Freddie Flowers at the moment because it cheers me up. Anything that cheers me up has to be a good thing!

ZoeTurtle · 13/01/2021 15:55

@Whiskysoda

I tried Gousto. Nothing wrong with the ingredients, the quality or the recipes but I quit as every single bloody thing is plastic wrapped. I only started them recently but sounds like this has improved a lot. Garlic now comes loose and a lot of the wrapping is paper.
notalwaysalondoner · 13/01/2021 15:55

£5 per portion is more than Cook, which normally works out at about £3.75 per portion - and is a lot easier! I haven't ever tried these but just moved house so tempted to try these voucher codes!

PeachScone · 13/01/2021 15:59

Really didn't enjoy the hello fresh recipes - however love mindful chef, so much more variety, more adventurous and more delicious. We are veggie though x

dueindecember10 · 13/01/2021 16:01

Cheekily adding my Gousto referral code if anyone fancies making my day! It gives you 40% off you first box and 30% off your first month.
And in response to some people saying about the packaging, they have dramatically cut down in recent months.

anniegun · 13/01/2021 16:01

We have tried Mindful Chef recently and were very happy with the food and recipes. However the packaging does make me feel too guilty to use these services regularly

doadeer · 13/01/2021 16:01

Another one saying gousto is better they have lots of 10/15 min meals that would be good for you. I found hello fresh so much washing up it really got on my nerves.

You can easily skip weeks too you dont need to do every single week if you fancy a break.

It is more expensive but no food waste and it's easy

Skyliner001 · 13/01/2021 16:03

Gousto Is better, there is a much better range, and they show you everything that is available, whereas hello fresh show you things based on algorithms. Also it's slightly cheaper, and the meals are less fattening, and also more interesting I think!

AttackOfTheFloppyKnob · 13/01/2021 16:06

We've used both hello fresh and gousto.

I find them really helpful and use the recipe cards to buy the ingredient and remake them. I even premix the spices and weigh out the other ingredients at the weekend so time wise it's pretty similar.
