Hi all!
After YEARS of being careful, warning others about glasses etc- of course I’m that one that paints the cream carpet with red wine Grin!
I dabbed it up as much as possible with warm water and baking soda. This has resulted in the lovely dark patch as shown Blush
MN Wisdom needed! Any tips on fixing this?

Put white wine on it as soon as you can. It’s worked for me On a lilac dress and a cream carpet.

Superstardjs · 12/01/2021 20:29

Keep pressing firmly with lots of kitchen roll, takes ages to soak it all up. Not sure if the hot water/baking soda will have helped, that's a new one on me I'm afraid. I spilt most of a bottle on my my cream carpet before and the dabbing got up pretty much all of it - borrowed a vax which sorted the last of it. It will be darker as it's wet, but keep pressing with fresh kitchen roll.

Olivetree615 · 12/01/2021 20:31

I think i may need to borrow a carpet cleaner at this point Blush

White wine!!!

RoganJosh · 12/01/2021 20:35

More bicarbonate of soda. It worked here on a full glass on a cream carpet.

CSIblonde · 12/01/2021 20:37

Blot worst of it out with kitchen roll. Then pound shop 1001 carpet cleaner. Whisk til enough froth for stain, apply, leave for a minute then since off. It gets practically anything out.

rosiepaul · 12/01/2021 20:37

A tablespoon of washing up liquid, a tablespoon of white vinegar, 2 cups of warm water (about 450 mls). White cloth like dish cloth or floor cloth and scrub!
This took widespread curry spillage out of my light beige carpet at the weekend. It was a miracle!

Calmandmeasured1 · 12/01/2021 20:37

Either:

  1. Prepare a cleaning solution: Add a tablespoon of hand dishwashing soap and a tablespoon of white vinegar to two cups of warm water. Using white cloth, only – so pigment from the cloth doesn't bleed into your carpet – apply a small pour onto the stain, blotting frequently until the stain vanishes.
  1. 1001 spot remover.
  1. Hire a Rug Doctor. They are amazing. Do the stain several times (because the first couple of goes will be it coming to the surface so will look worse) then do the whole floor. The carpet will be like new. (I haven't done on red wine but on a big coke stain and a big coffee stain).

Wine Away - it works like magic:

If you dont have a carpet cleaner then just hire one from the supermarket. Give the stain a good few goings over and then do the while floor or you'll have one clean patch and the rest will be a bit dull.

Keeping2ChevronsApart · 12/01/2021 20:43

I'd just move the rug over Grin

Cheeringmeup · 12/01/2021 20:47

I did this very thing last night - did my best blotting and so on, but fairly confident the Dr Beckman's carpet stain remover that I've ordered will do the trick (arriving tomorrow). I've used it before and it even lifted Irn Bru stains.

tinkiiev · 12/01/2021 20:48

Is the carpet natural fibre or acrylic? Bc if acrylic (or other man made) you can literally put bleach on it - those ones aren't dyed; the fibres are the colour of the carpet iyswim.

Obvs if not sure don't pour bleach all over it. Grin But you could try removing a small thread from somewhere unnoticeable, like by the radiator, and putting bleach on that and see what happens.

Ewock · 12/01/2021 21:00

Vanish mousse is amazing. Has got curry (thanks dh) out of a carpet in a rented flat and red wine (oops) out if our carpet now.

Olivetree615 · 12/01/2021 21:02

Thank you all very much!! I will update once I’ve tried some different methods Grin

What worked @olivetree615, I've spilt red wine on my carpet and need to sort it

knittingaddict · 17/01/2021 21:47

Dr beckmans carpet cleaner is amazing. I would 100% recommend it.

We have a light beige carpet and my husband split red wine on it soon after we had it put down. We ordered some dr beckmans and you would never know it had happened. We recently sold a sofa bed which had almond oil spilt on it. I used some dr beckmans and didn't think it would work but in the morning the mark had totally vanished.

I know I sound like I have shares in the company but I honestly don't. You can Google online reviews.

knittingaddict · 17/01/2021 21:48

Just seen that someone else gas recommended it too.

ScreamingBeans · 17/01/2021 21:56

OMG can't believe I've actually got some in the cupboard. Something useful and to hand.

Cheers.

UrAWizHarry · 17/01/2021 21:56

White wine on a red wine stain is just a waste of good wine. It's an old wife's tale.

Blot as much of it up as possible, put salt down and leave to dry, and then hoover. Do not rub at it as you'll just work the stain in further. If there is still a mark then use an oxicleaner.
