To think animal charities are important too?

Watching tv with DH and the RSPCA advert comes on. The one about leaving a donation in your will. He proceeds to say he thinks its pointless to give money to animals when there are humans suffering eg cancer, poverty etc.

I was quite shocked as I'm an animal lover and he is too. He is nuts about our dog and would do anything for him!

Surely its unreasonable to think only humans deserve to have their suffering lessened? FWIW I give to both human and animal charities as I think both are important.

YABU - Humans come first, animal charities are a waste

YANBU - Both are important

YANBU I would rather donate to animals than for humans basically because I prefer animals over humans any day of the week.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 12/01/2021 17:42

YANBU, but by choice when I give to charity it tends to be for charities that support women and children such as Womens Aid (who I have personally benefitted from) or work in developing countries, or things like UNHCR and the refugee crisis, having seen their work in the job that I do. For me, charities that support humans are more important. That not to say that I think that animals aren't important or should be mistreated, or that animal charities don't matter. We all tend to support the things that align with our personal experiences or issues.

Floralnomad · 12/01/2021 17:46

YANBU , but unlike the pp most of my charitable donations are for animal charities .

Crankley · 12/01/2021 17:49

YANBU but I donate to smaller animal charities rather than the RSPCA etc.

Parky04 · 12/01/2021 17:49

YANU but I would advise against leaving any charity something in your will. They are relentless at collecting what they are due!

Santaiscovidfree · 12/01/2021 17:52

A poster added somewhere here yesterday that as a volunteer for an animal charity they witnessed a 1m go to the redecoration of a charity building. Not quite what the will maker had in mind I imagine..
I once was a volunteer fostering and I personally didn't see /hear of anything untoward..

ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 12/01/2021 17:54

I think it's up to you what charities you donate to.

I personally wouldn't donate to animal charities but that's up to me.

Biscuitsanddoombar · 12/01/2021 17:59

Research shows that animal charities are the most popular cause donated too receiving 26% of public donations - same as charities for children/young ppl.

Buildings have to be maintained, so I wouldn't automatically be against that.

What people should be aware of is that if you want to leave money to your local branch of a charity you really need to specify that. Don't just name the charity as it's likely to be grabbed by head office and your local branch won't see a penny.

Covine · 12/01/2021 18:05

I think you should give your money where you wish to and let your DH do the same.

Personally I wouldn't donate to an animal charity because it seems a bit Marie Antoinette but then I think owning pets is weird anyway so clearly don't agree with you about any of this op. 🤣

megletthesecond · 12/01/2021 18:07

Yanbu. Some animal charities receive huge amounts of money though. One in particular makes me wonder where the cash goes. The charities commission website is an interesting read.

wellthatsunusual · 12/01/2021 18:09

I think it's more important to look after humans than animals but that doesn't mean I'd never give money to an animal charity.

But I suspect I'm in a minority. Animal charities generally find it far easier to raise money than people charities.

MaraThorn · 12/01/2021 18:10

I only donate to animal charities.

ilovesooty · 12/01/2021 18:10

I've left a sum in my will to a small local rescue I got my two cats from. I've consulted with them and it's dependent on them taking over the welfare of my pets after I die. The executors have to inform them of my death and work with them to make appropriate arrangements. Small rescues have been really stretched during the pandemic and I've made contributions or bought food when I can.

thecatsthecats · 12/01/2021 18:12

Well, 99% of twats in the world are people.

The 1% of animal twats includes my cat, who bites my ankles when I'm on the loo.

But on the whole, animals are if not nice, at least neutral.

nanbread · 12/01/2021 18:13

Big animal charities - and big cancer charities - get HUGE funding / amounts left in wills etc.

I don't think they're missing out.

notdaddycool · 12/01/2021 18:13

From someone in the sector, animal charities and religious charities receive huge amounts. It feels sometimes that they are in a different plane to the rest. Some causes are so hard to raise for, I feel for the fundraisers at ERIC, The Children's Bowel & Bladder Charity.

Bilgepumper · 12/01/2021 18:14

I only support the PDSA.

Catlover77 · 12/01/2021 18:22

I support two animal charities. Humans don’t come first!

AnnaSW1 · 12/01/2021 18:39

I'd support humans before animals.

TheoriginalLEM · 12/01/2021 18:42

The RSPCA recieve the most bequeaths from wills than any other charity and at a local level do , well, not very much. I can think of better charities, be it animal or otherwise

formerbabe · 12/01/2021 18:44

I don't give to charity but if I did I wouldn't choose to give to an animal charity.

isseys4xmastinselcats · 12/01/2021 18:54

the big animal charities recieve huge amaounts of money from bequests and grants, its the smaller local animal charities that i support no public funding grants tend to be for projects like repairing buiidings rather than vet or food bills

Porcupineintherough · 12/01/2021 18:56

It's a matter of personal preference surely? I give to human and conservation charities (so wild animals rather than domestic ones). But there are far more good causes out there than I can support. So, I rarely give to cancer related charities. Doesnt mean I dont think they are important.
