Has anyone managed to finish all of the work in one homeschooling day?

My children have been quite compliant, worked fairly fast, and generally do what they have been told. But we just can't seem to finish the amount of work set in a reasonable amount of time.
We have been working all day today and I haven't had time to get to maths. Now its 3pm and I have to decide whether we finish the maths (and work until about 5) or sod it and go out.

We have been working on Saturday aswell to try to catch up but it just can't be done! I only have 2 primary school aged children aswell. I count today as a really good day.

Does anyone have any tips? I was considering forgetting the younger ones history work and just focusing on the eldest, but letting the youngest join in. Should shave off a few hours.
We are working on a smartphone too which doesn't help as it's a small touch screen thats easily knocked.

A full school day can be done

Skim a bit of the work off, there's too much

My children do some of everything, but not every question. Some children will do more or less - the teacher sets enough so that no one runs out.

Choconuttolata · 12/01/2021 17:11

I think it depends on the age/needs of your child.

Dd1 is 11 and doing live lessons and completing learning during lessons.

Dd2 is 8 and has Maths and English only in the morning, Topic (Varying Languages, Humanities or Science) and then PE in the afternoon. This is doable as the tasks set don't need a lot of input and she is quite able to complete them with a little support for printing or technical issues. She also is a keen reader and doesn't need me to listen to her read.

Ds is 7 but has ASD and needs total 1:1 support for everything, it all takes longer so only managed the English, Maths and PE today. He did Science, Reading and Phonics yesterday. It depends on the tasks set as I have to adapt them for him as much of it he cannot access which takes longer, the school are not providing work for his ability level/needs like they would have to if he was in school.

Omg woman, stop! You have two kids and you’re doing this on one phone, give yourself a break! Really.

People’s genuine ability to get everything done will vary so much depending on different but completely normal things, it’s pointless asking whether everyone else is getting it all done and then judging yourself against it.

Remember that teachers will all be setting varying amounts of work, sending videos of different lengths, they’re not going to be able to differentiate as well as they can in a classroom so I can imagine there will be loads of parents out there trying to get their children to do things that would be considered too hard for them in school. This whole thing is so difficult, and you’re doing what you can so you are doing well.

You were right to prioritise the English then the maths and leave what you don’t have time for in a normal day.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 12/01/2021 17:22

My DS is at the top of the class ability wise (we were told this in the last parents evening.)

He isn't finishing it all, but he is working independently upstairs whilst we WFH downstairs.

I was worrying about it a bit but have decided we will just prioritise as the days go on.

Katkincake · 12/01/2021 17:31

We finish about 75-90% of tasks on time depending on how Ds (6) is managing or how much time / effort we can put into tasks with him. We haven't done the PE stuff as he does cosmic kids first thing and we like to get outside in the afternoon instead. DH tends to lead on the more academic stuff in the morning and I do humanities and art stuff after lunch. Feel bad as we've missed every class video call so far as didn't get enough notice for them from teacher - thankfully we have a schedule for them now. Not beating ourselves up over this we're all doing our best, don't want to add more stress to the house and he's bright and will catch up.

digthroughtheditches · 12/01/2021 17:32

No. We just about managed to finish Mondays today. It was the same last time, we're always playing catch up.

I discovered today after a class zoom my daughter didn't know how to do something everyone else did. The teacher said 'you all know how to do this' but she didn't and she burst into tears. So we spent the morning going over that (she's year 2 and it was something she should have learned in year 1, but most of that year was spent at home with me and I'm terrible at maths! Blush)
So anyway. That set us right back. I'm quite glad in a way, her teachers wouldn't have known she couldn't do it as she doesn't say anything.

CazM2012 · 12/01/2021 17:40

We started at 9.30 and finished at 5 Sad 3 primary aged children, we did have a walk in the middle of the day after dinner but that was only an hour and a half for both. Didn’t manage all of DC2 English work either. I’m going to have to skip some as I think we will all need the weekend to recover (and for me to do anything else)

grannyinapram · 12/01/2021 17:41

We left it and went out for a walk instead, only just got back. Yes I didn't think about how much work gets left at school, I have the sense that the teachers are judging me but of course they aren't. I just don't want to seem lazy as I'm a sahm so this is all I have to do (toddler and baby too though so its bloody hard!)

My eldest is learning about ancient egypt and its so interesting that I've got some work from twinkl and we have been learning loads about that, the kids are really engaging and loving it, but everything else is a battle. I think I might just focus on that topic, add a bit of maths and sneak in their English work, just make it more Egyptian.
Needs must and all that. no point suffering!

Doing school work from info on a phone must be very hard. It wouldn’t work for dd, who is in secondary. It doesn’t matter what everyone else is doing. You do you. Your dc will catch up. DD’s friend had tons of time off in yr6. She smoothly transitioned to yr7.

heymammy · 12/01/2021 17:51

I genuinely don't think any primary school child should be doing 6 hours of homeshooling a day, let alone any extra!

Ds is 8 and is doing English and maths then he plays on minecraft until I'm finished work. He has been hard to engage though, last lockdown he hated doing work at home so we've completely stepped off the gas and are only doing the basics.

I'm sure there's a better balance, you're right to focus on what they enjoy and keeping it fun Smile

whatkatydid2013 · 12/01/2021 17:54

We’ve not been set a huge amount for our Y2 daughter. There are a couple of English exercises/writing tasks, a couple of maths areas, a couple of project tasks for some combination of technology, science, history & geography, some art and a PSHE task for the week. On top of that we’ve been asked to read every day. We spend about an hour each morning and each afternoon on a task, we have her read us a short story and do some independent reading or watch short videos of materials around one of her topics. We’ve also been out or doing go noodle/cosmic yoga every day for a couple of half hour sessions. I think it’s probably a sensible amount to juggle with work commitments and that they generally get through it faster at home than they would at school as they have us to sit with them and help 1:1. Ours is all paper based so no issues with lack of devices and I think no live lessons is probably also useful

anxiousturtle · 12/01/2021 17:57

We've been sent a timetable to follow that runs from 9-3 (although no pressure to actually follow it.)

I'm finding that DD is finished by lunchtime. We're happy with that. She has one live lesson each morning and does the rest of her work around that.

Doublechins · 12/01/2021 18:12

My kids tend to get a weeks worth sent through at a time.

6 year old was finished by lunchtime Thursday.
9 year old was finished by 2pm Friday.
10 year old was finished 3.30 Friday.

That was last week when I had a couple of online lectures to do and did my assignments etc when they were in bed.
This week I am out of the house from 6.30 for 4 days so I don't anticipate the same success although the older 2 have got through a fair chunk of it already because I've asked them to stay quite focused and try do more on the days I'm home.

lockedownloretta · 12/01/2021 18:13

Do school know that you're working on a phone? It really will be worth mentioning it to the teacher as the school might be able to loan you a laptop or ipad which will make things easier.
