To think that a solicitor is not a key worker?

Grrr, three sets of parents at our school are solicitors. Not family lawyers dealing with courts but plain old private client wills and trust lawyers. They most definitely could WFH but no, they've ALL sent their kids to school.
AIBU to think they are being unreasonable? Angry

Not this again!

formerbabe · 12/01/2021 14:40

You missed the memo. EVERYONE is a key worker now. And if home learning will cause you a mild inconvenience, then apparently you can get a school place for your kids...

Sparklingbrook · 12/01/2021 14:41

Mmmm. Not sure. You would have to know all of the families exact domestic circumstances and work arrangements to be entirely sure they weren't taking the piss. But it's not a job that immediately springs to mind, no.
I guess peoples wills still need sorting during a pandemic and people may even have to go into the solicitor's office to have signatures witnessed etc.

SeasonFinale · 12/01/2021 14:41

You do realise that there is contentious probate which is court based work and also this department deals with Court of Protection work so jog on!

Yes, the court cases haven't stopped have they. Good point.

LOL at ‘plain old private client wills and trust lawyers’. Solicitors dealing with wills are very firmly within the definition of critical worker. They’re specifically named. Because, in case you hadn’t noticed, there’s been rather a lot of death lately.

Also the ability to WFH doesn’t mean you’re not a critical worker.

Bamski · 12/01/2021 14:43

Sorry, just to clarify you think you can take death bed will instructions from home?

Get your beak out of other peoples business and just make sure you’re following the rules that you seem to understand better than anyone else.

formerbabe · 12/01/2021 14:44

I jest...but yeah, by the government's loose definitions of key workers, vulnerable kids and not having a quiet space at home it appears virtually every child should be at school. It's ridiculous.

IndecentFeminist · 12/01/2021 14:44

Yawn. Any more professions going to merit their own thread soon?

Buddytheelf85 · 12/01/2021 14:45

The Law Society’s guidance on it, in case you’re interested:

We are obviously fools for trying to home school our children and hold down two FT jobs then! What planks! 🙄

Bore off. Seriously!

And solicitors need to work, they can't stop working... so that makes them essential workers.

Thank you @Buddytheelf85 it's all fairly clear in that link. Solicitors can indeed be a key/critical workers.

sofiaaaaaa · 12/01/2021 14:47

Non-criminal legal proceedings are still ongoing. People are still dying and wills are still being disputed. The services of a solicitor are still necessary.

Why are you jealous that a solicitor gets to call themselves a key worker or send their children in? Honestly sort your life out! Imagine getting worked up over this 🤮

KimchiLaLa · 12/01/2021 14:48

I do agree the definition of a key worker list is absolutely mental.

formerbabe · 12/01/2021 14:48

In all seriousness I can see why solicitors would need a key worker space but at the moment it feels like everyone needs one.

namechangereq · 12/01/2021 14:48

It’s basically inconvenient and difficult to WFH whilst home schooling with ANY job.

I think if you’re physically able to WFH - so not a nurse, supermarket worker - something ‘key’ then you should suck it up.

Unpopular opinion but realistically no job is easy to do whilst home schooling.

No way. I didn't say that. To be fair, death bed wills are reasonably rare and do not mean you need to be in the office 5 days a week.

Houses are still being sold, cost e cases are still being held, wills are still needed, couples are still divorcing...

^^^ this.

How do people not apply any lateral thinking.

Godimabitch · 12/01/2021 14:48

Seems like a pretty essential service to me.

Quartz2208 · 12/01/2021 14:49

I imagine wills and probate has been massively effected by COVID and there must be a backlog that needs to clear.

PurplePansy05 · 12/01/2021 14:49

Try representing in court and visiting clients to finalise their wills with your kids in tow and then you can comment.
