is £300 normal for solicitor to witness a document?

We're moving abroad, and the estate agent has sent us the documents to sign, which need to be witnessed by a solicitor.
The documents are straight forward enough, and all in English.

Because of the obvious, I had to call several solicitors who are local who'd be willing to do it.
This solicitor is about 5 miles away, and travels to us to conduct the deed outside our house. All Covid-safe.

The fee for this has come to £100 per document (there are 3 documents) = £300.

A quick google says that usually it's £5 per document, though I recognise its a different scenario because of the travel.

Does this seem normal?

We had to get something for an overseas bank signed by a notary public. Think this is a solicitor, with extra training and registration to an international standard, who also verifies your ID and keeps a copy. It cost almost £200. Bank would not have accepted normal solicitor. You are probably paying for this, plus travel time to your home and back. There's a register of notaries you can google, then get a few quotes.

Shop around. The Notary public we use would do those 3 documents for £120 probably. Get the great big fat wax seal person.

I used a small local solicitors and I think they only charged me £20 or £30 for 1 document.

I paid £40 during first lockdown at a local solicitor’s office, but I went to them. If you want them to travel to you then that’s a huge hassle and at the moment they may also want some ‘danger money’ unless you’re all meeting in full PPE.

If you go to their office I’d expect it to be no more than £50 but if they have to come to you they can charge as much as they like.

Hi if you need a Notary then I would suggest contacting www.midlandsnotary.com who can advise you and give you price up front.

If it just requires a solicitor and no apostille etc then you would probably be advised to visit a high street firm.
Hope this helps.
