ok pre-pandemic story. and disclaimer. i know after a month of being on here i come across harsh and outspoken but i genuinely have respect for people's opinions but this story kind of got my blood up but at the same time couldn't help laughing. i am totally blind so my mode of transport is cabs. in the city centre is a fantastic pub where i used to go regularly either with the odd friend but most of the time by myself. unfortunately(and i agree its not ideal) to get a cab right outside the pub which is easier for me you have to park in a bus stop. most of the times we would pull up without incident. i jump out straight ahead, i'm inside bam cab drives off. but sadly there has been times where my drivers have had the occasional ticket for parking there. but this particular incident was rediculous. we pulled up and the next thing this bus driver starts hammering his horn. driver gets out to have a word to explain that he is just dropping a disabled passenger off and will be gone in less than 30 seconds. anyway he gets a total torrent of abuse from this bus driver about how we were holding up his schedule etc. the cab driver then said to him "how would you feel if you were disabled" answer? "i couldn't give a fuck!. meanwhile i get out the cab with a white stick fully extended which made no difference at all. and why did i laugh later? because in my mind the only person holding up his schedule was himself not us. is this just me?

dam sorry for typo in the post subject. didn't spot that until i posted. should say "is tolerance a thing of the past now?"

I’m surprised this had time to happen if it’s literally a 30-second drop-off, OP. Given that you also say some of your drivers have had tickets for parking at this bus stop, are you sure you’re not underestimating the amount of time the cabs stay pulled in there?

firthy85 · 12/01/2021 06:47

milkmoon. its literally a park up, i jump out i don't even need to extend my stick its straight ahead something like 3 or 4 yard and i am at the double doors to the bar. it had time to happen because the other driver was being an arse about it when all it took was for him just to have said "ah ok mate no probs" problem solved in seconds. i fully understand how you get some drivers with a very entitled attitude who will take the piss but every situation should be dealt with as an individual situation.

Why don’t you get out then pay them through the window? They can’t drive off then!

HarryElephante · 12/01/2021 07:14

Genuine question, how do you type if you are completely blind?

firthy85 · 12/01/2021 07:44

@hike forward. i'm not talking about the taxi driving off, that's fine, he doesn't need to do anything because its so close i have to just get onto the kerb and walk straight ahead to the entrance. i am talking about a bus driver who appears to not be able to tell the diference between a cab driver deliberately hogging a bus stop and one who is just dropping off a passenger who needs to be as close as he can get me to my drop off point. to the question about how do i type this. i have a screen reader program on the laptop which speaks everything i type and read

Really curious about this. How did you know there was a typo?

firthy85 · 12/01/2021 09:54

chippy chicken, i have just explained that on an above post. i have a screen reading software as i type what i want to say it speaks to me and same with reading back through websites. its the software that's different other than that i use a normal laptop. i have an Iphone with the same software but i wouldn't trust predictive text to not muck up more than just my post subject. seen this often on other people's posts here

bigbluebus · 12/01/2021 09:59

@HarryElephante - some people can actually touch type or there's voice recognition software.

firthy85 · 12/01/2021 10:48

i touch type. learned it from school. just use a normal keyboard with fingers spread across them so i know which letters are what although it tells me anyway. i'm cool with the questions it's hard to understand unless yourself has experience from say a family member or someone you know.

I think considering this has happened once and you mention that drivers have had tickets before, that the bus driver was caught on a bad day.

I suspect they do get ticked off when every other bus stop has a cab in it - cabs don’t always adhere to driving etiquette let alone actual rules of the road! Most will drop anyone as close to their destination as possible, IME it makes no difference that you’re blind.

The comment about not giving a fuck was said in the heat of the moment when challenged, not many people will just cal down immediately with an ‘oh that’s alright then’ comment.

firthy85 · 12/01/2021 12:32

think what annoyed me more about the other driver's reaction was that my driver got out,was very courteous towards him think his words were just simply "sorry mate dropping a disabled passenger will be gone once he get's out" and nothing but abuse for his efforts to be nice and polite. my driver only lost his temper at the end because of the way the other guy ranted at him more or less non-stop for at least a minute with my guy still at first trying to keep calm. god knows what some of the other passengers must have thought of what was going on.

LaceyBetty · 12/01/2021 12:35

I agree. People lose their minds at the smallest inconveniences sometimes.

firthy85 · 12/01/2021 13:07

totally lacey. and what did it achieve in the end? he was as i said inconveniencing himself doing exactly what he was accusing us of doing holding up his schedule by standing there on the road side being an arse. that's why after he had gone i burst into laughter

EllJ · 12/01/2021 13:31

I agree, I've been saying recently how much I dislike "people". I'm so fed up of general rudeness, intolerance, lack of understanding etc. From some of the general public.

In pretty sure the grumpy bus driver would indeed give a shit if he had to face even one tenth of the challenges that you do on a daily basis with your visual impairments.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 12/01/2021 13:34

There was always frustration at taxis stopping at bus stops, that's nothing new. And I've seen fair few arguments betweeen drivers as well.

firthy85 · 12/01/2021 13:40

EllJ. exactly. when i look at the cost of cabs if i actually had a choice to get a cheaper alternative such as a bus i certainly would do so. except for not having a family of my own yet aged 35, its my only grumble. i live on my own i get out and about(obviously not as much atm because of current situations) but other than that i will face anything head-on. crouded places such as a town centre bar on my own trying to navigate a sea of people never phased me. never had that anxiety that a lot of disabled people have but it is a challenge. it probably is a difficult situation for any bus driver though, if they have had problems with peopele deliberately parking up then leaving the car that's of course something different entirely

You're not wrong op. I see people get so irate at really small things. Unless you go and live completely alone, your daily life will be delayed, impeded, made slightly more awkward by other people, even if they do everything completely perfectly. Because they are simply there. Taking up a parking place, ahead of you in a queue, taking the last x you wanted in a shop, whatever. My dp got massively pissed off the other day because a chap spent 5/6 mins drying off his dog and getting sorted out before vacating a parking space he wanted. So what? It wasn't unreasonable, we weren't in a rush. Mostly, the only outcome is the aggro person has a worse day but often, if it gets directed at someone, it can really upset them too and there's just no need for it.

firthy85 · 12/01/2021 15:49

of course it's nothing new. it just makes me think its so pathetic. a situation that could have been easily delt with in a few seconds took over a minute. you can't judge, maybe it genuinely was a bad day for him and he acted out of character but got me thinking afterwards that bet he's the kind of bus driver who get's arsy over everything, passengers taking too long to sit down, mum with dc in pram etc.

I agree people are less tolerant now for sure. Just look at twitter!
