AIBU to not be expected to find WFH duties by my employer

I work in the public sector within I.T. I have been told that I cannot work from home as they'll be nothing for me to do. As my job involves plugging things in, loading software, shipping equipment, they're saying my role cannot be carried out from home.

I've disputed this by saying I also have written elements of my role and have a work laptop to do complete these. They're saying it's not sufficient to even cover 2 days WFH.
I'm so upset by this as I'm a single parent, 2DCs in school and nursery and I feel offering 3 days a week in the office shouldn't be met with such strong, unempathetic objection.., the stress of having to find sufficient work is making me feel ill tbh. It's been adjusted for a few weeks but awaiting review. AIBU to expect my employer to be more proactive in finding tasks for me? It seems only senior technicians have the choice but lower level staff are expected in, 5 days a week.

I think it sounds really hard for you but if your job primarily needs to be done at the office, it sounds reasonable for them to expect you to do it there.

I dont understand what you mean. Your job is primarily needed in the office but you want them to find a different job you can do from home instead? Or you're in the office but there's not much to do?

It’s sounds really tricky, but I don’t think people can expect their employers to completely change their job descriptions to enable them to work from home - surely they’d be taking work away from someone else. You can asked to be furloughed for childcare reasons.

Can you provide IT support for colleagues who are wfh?

You've posted this twice under different names,

Prove them wrong then. Come up with a work plan that will keep you gainfully occupied WFH 5 days a week. Convince them.

Would it be helpful to you to WFH a couple of days a week or does it have to be all or nothing? Would your school child can go into school and nursery child to nursery when you are working in the office but you'd keep school child at home on days you were WFH?
