Mounting tv but how to hide wires

diamondsr4u · 10/01/2021 14:50

Currently our tv is in a corner of the room, the outer wall of that corner is where the wire for the sky dish comes through and that wire is then connected to the sky box.
We are going to mount our tv in the centre of the wall, so on the chimney wall, but the issue am having is how would I hide that sky dish wire? It needs to be connected to sky box, and the sky box needs to be connected to the tv, so I would need to have the sky box mounted behind the tv. But how do I have that ugly wire out of view?? I can't move the wire as it comes in to our wall from the outside. I hope it makes sense

You have to dig a ch

justchecking1 · 10/01/2021 15:50

Ooops!
You have to a dig a channel in the wall to run the wire and then plaster over the top

LakieLady · 10/01/2021 15:52

If you don't want to do that, you can hide it in cable trunking. Screwfix etc sell it.

PivotPivotPivottt · 10/01/2021 15:54

Mine is covered with trunking

princessphoenix · 10/01/2021 15:54

My tv is mounted above the radiator cover so I just painted the cables to match the wall and a conveniently placed ornament. Unless your properly looking you can't anything.

vanillandhoney · 10/01/2021 15:55

Holes in the wall, and then the wires feed behind the plaster into a cabinet.

Marylou62 · 10/01/2021 15:59

You buy this, cut it to size, stick it to the wall, put cables in, there's 4 in this, clip on the top bit then paint it...

Google D line trunking. It comes in different sizes and colours. It’s self adhesive and hinged on the side so you can open and close it to add or remove cables as required

Ahhh yes didn't occur to me about channeling. To make less of a mess, could I put majority of the wire behind the skirting?

You can get special skirting boards that are designed for exactly that!

cherrokerro · 10/01/2021 16:37

This is ours - it's a plastic tube from Homebase which sticks to the wall and you can paint it the same as the wall colour (which we haven't got round to doing yet).

Is it possible to drill a new hole from the outer wall that comes out behind where you want to mount the tv? Then feed the cable through the new hole and fill the old hole?

Gobbycop · 10/01/2021 17:06

If it's just where the sky cable enters the property that's the problem I'd do exactly as the previous poster.

Why would you start hacking and filling plasterboard when you can just drill a new hole where you want the cable to appear?

you mustn't put mains cable behind skirting, because it will be inconvenient when someone puts a drill, screw or nail into it.

you can put aerial, speaker etc wires behind skirting. There is a technique that I can explain if you ask in "property" if you want to do a nice job.

I'd go for mini-trunking, it is fairly easy. You can paint it to match the wall (before fixing) and the type I use, the cover clips on and off so you can add or remove cables at whim.

NewPapaGuinea · 10/01/2021 18:17

You only mention the satellite cable, but what are your plans for the power cable?

diamondsr4u · 10/01/2021 21:28

@Marylou62 I couldn't do that as mine is a chimney wall, so not one flat wall.

@NewPapaGuinea all other cables will go on a socket that will sit behind the tv. Just today I realised the sky satellite wire comes in from the outside! Oh how I wish it was just a simple plug I could move around lol.

Hi @PigletJohn I recognise your name from when I've asked questions in the past in 'property'
How would mini trunking work, so I would have it trunking all the way around the wall to the place of where the tv will be

I already have wires behind the skirting. It's electrical wires for the plug sockets. Electrician did tell us not to drill anything in to the skirting because of the wires.

you can run trunking along the top of the skirting, it will not be very noticable; then vertically to centre of the TV.

I prefer to run cables under the floor (never under the carpet) and then come up to the TV. But this is easier if the floorboards have been laid in a convenient way, and screwed down.

If the loft is above, you can run cables in the loft, then run down to the TV.

If the wall is plasterboard on studs, you can run cables in the void, but usually not far as there will be noggins between the studs. I would not chase them into the wall.

I don't understand the trend for putting TV's onto walls. Watching telly like that would hurt my neck

Snap, I prefer the TV to be at eye level.
BillyAndTheSillies · 11/01/2021 06:50

We have our tv mounted on the chimney breast. When we had the room replastered we had a plug socket put on the chimney breast and built a channel to hide all the wires.

And the tv is mounted at eye level. You can don't (and shouldn't) have to mount them so your neck is craned to watch it.
