When should I pay this handyman? AIBU

Disclaimer - I will definitely pay him

I use a handyman who’s previously been reasonably reliable to do odd jobs I can’t do myself.
In the middle of October I asked him to pop in or call me as I had a list of things that needed doing (3 small jobs). He said he would. By early November I reminded him I needed these jobs doing. He eventually called in mid November, promising to come and see what needed doing.
I reminded him each week I needed him to do jobs. I only stuck with him because he’s been previously reliable and has good covid measures (mask/disinfecting etc)
He eventually turned up at the end of November and arranged a time to do the jobs. He didn’t turn up on this day, so I reminded him again. He didn’t turn up as arranged.

He eventually turned up a week later and did one job saying he needed to order a thermostat for the shower and a special bit of kit to fix a dripping tap. I offered to pay him for the job he’d done so far but he said he’d get the money when the job was done.

So early December I regularly remind him I need these jobs doing ASAP. He promised to turn up several times but never did. Eventually turned up on 23rd December at 8pm and fixes dripping tap. Says the thermostat is on order. He fiddled the temperature control on the shower so that now you can only have a shower so cold you’d freeze or the skin in your back peels off it’s so hot (before his intervention it was either slightly hot or slightly cold).

Over Xmas the tap started to drip just as badly as it had previously. It’s now nearly running unless you can find the precise angle it needs to be to not drip.

Handyman submits an invoice over Christmas for the work done so far (job 1 and dripping tap).

He called me the other day to say the thermostat had come into the supplier over Xmas but had been lost so it needed reordering. I told him about the tap and he promised to come last Friday to fix it. Didn’t turn up.

His excuse every time for not turning up is ‘I’ve had a nightmare day’.

Aibu not to pay him until he’s done the jobs he’s left half done in my house? He keeps on texting to remind me he’s submitted an invoice. In no pushover and I’ve been blunt with him about needing the jobs finished.

Pay him (possibly for everything but the tap) and tell him you've waited long enough for the rest of his services, and as he's not reliable enough you'll find someone else to do the rest.

Yes pay him what he’s done so far and find someone else . I can’t abide having to chase someone. Just transfer the money today and message him to say paid, thanks but as your so busy will find someone else to do the other jobs .

I'm not sure I've taken in the details correctly, but if theres work you are unhappy with, tell him you want it rectifying before payment, as the job has not been completed to a satisfactory standard being that it isn't working as it should.
Outline the problems.
The tap is still leaking?
The shower is still not getting to an adequate temperature?
What has he actually completed?
Tell him you give him 7 days to complete the work to a satisfactory working standard, then he will get paid within 24 hours

(it doesn't read like he's completed anything at this point, just fiddled with no improvement)

If he cannot be reliable in returning to sort the half done, no improvement jobs then you will consider the work abandoned and as he hasn't made any improvements to your use of these items you can't see why you'd have anything to pay for.

And you'll get somebody else.

He has been unreliable and ineffective from the sounds of it.

Argh OP this would drive me mad. I’d pay him for job 1, cancel job 3 and tell him you’ll pay for the tap when it’s repaired properly.

GloveFromAbove · 10/01/2021 13:16

He hasn’t outlined each job, just hours done and cost for equipment (which seems steep but what do I know? If I did I’d be doing it myself!)

I can’t say how long he spent on job 1 (which was done well) vs other jobs. I might pay him for parts supplied.

I’m going to use the bit about 7 days for work done otherwise he’s not getting paid for labour.

And I’m certainly not using him again!

Tell him you cannot consider payment until you receive an invoice which is itemised by the job:-

#1 leaky tap = XX labour plus parts £xx

#2 shower .........

islockdownoveryet · 11/01/2021 13:19

Yes tell him you want it itemised as only paying for what he’s done .
