AIBU to go sledging when I'm the wrong side of 50?

We've got quite a bit of snow atm, and a lot of hills.
My DC is grown and away now but a friend with kids posted an open invite for friends to join them. I'm a big kid at heart and replied "I'm tempted" grabbed my coat and went out to join them.
Not being able to find DCs sledge I found the most heavy duty 'plaggy bag' I had and went for it. It was great! I had so much enjoyment from throwing myself down a bumpy slope, lasted half an hour before my legs couldn't take another ascent.

I felt a bit sore sitting down when I got home. Last night getting into the shower I realised I have a massive like MASSIVE bruise on my arse, blooming out from my coccyx with a 4" radius!

My AIBU is, am I too old at 52 for this game? Should I leave it to the kids?

Or YANBU I should do it if it makes me happy, of course I didn't embarrass myself barrelling down the slopes like the opening segment of Indiana Jones and the temple of Doom numerous times...

Of course you are not too old. Sledging is fun for everyone. My friend sent me a video of her sledging with her 18 month old granddaughter. She is late 50's. Both were having a ball.

OccultGnuAsWell · 10/01/2021 08:27

YANBU and if we had snow round where I am I would be there with you (aged 59)

I feel it very unreasonable that the recovery time is longer when you are older though.

WisestIsShe · 10/01/2021 08:28

What do they say, growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional.
I think you should take every bit of joy from life you can and sledging is neither illegal, immoral or fattening.

GoLightlyontheEarth · 10/01/2021 08:28

I would love to but no one will go with me!

KellyJonesLeatherTrousers · 10/01/2021 08:28

YANBU. But invest in a sledge when you can, might save the bruised behind! You had fun and didn’t harm anyone else - enjoy yourself, what’s the point of life if you can’t?

KatherineJaneway · 10/01/2021 08:28

Glad you had fun!

shouldistop · 10/01/2021 08:30

We went sledging nearly all day yesterday. We have a 4yo but I was enjoying it just as much. Gave birth 5 weeks ago and I'm afraid my down belows are a bit sore today - oops.
Gutted it rained overnight and washed it all away.

lidoshuffle · 10/01/2021 08:31

As we get older there's more reason to do the things we really fancy. Time is getting less! Who cares what other people think; not that they are interested anyway.

shouldistop · 10/01/2021 08:31

Meant to say , there were other adults there that didn't look like they were with kids either. Everyone had big smiles on their faces.

MrsDThomas · 10/01/2021 08:32

Im just few years off 50 and I went sledging yesterday. All morning and I'm off again today! Go enjoy!

peak2021 · 10/01/2021 08:34

A pity you could not find the sledge and had to improvise. Sitting on a sledge should be something with no age limit.

OddBoots · 10/01/2021 08:34

Nothing to do with your age but it's quite a risk when the hospitals are or are becoming full. I am naturally risk-averse though so my perspective may be off.

Landlubber2019 · 10/01/2021 08:34

You are v v unreasonable to post this question! I am nearly 50 last time I sledged I had to drive miles to the snowdome, would be outside sledging it we had snow Sad

Streamside · 10/01/2021 08:59

Of course you should sledge.I shocked myself a few days by taking a really heavy fall on a pavement. It was the worst I've ever had and my head literally bounced of concrete. Conditions were awful and I had no need to be out so I think I was unreasonable as it's miraculous I didn't need medical help and my local hospital is way over capacity. I've had to rest for several days and have a lot of aches and pains still but I've been really lucky.
If we'd enough snow I would consider sledging but my recent fall made me very wary of icy pavements.

PivotPivotPivottt · 10/01/2021 09:02

Definitely not too old. I took my children sledging nearly every day last week. My 58 year old step dad was on it more than them. I had one shot and fell off and rolled down the hill Blush

wafflyversatile · 10/01/2021 09:07

I went sledging a couple of years ago on a rare snow day. Phoned in and took the day off work to do so. 3 of us. All adults. Me 50 a friend 40 and my lodger a 19 year old refugee first timer. It was delightful.

PaperMonster · 10/01/2021 09:16

51 year old here with a nine year old who loves to sledge - and I’ve been sledging with her this week. Love it. Bloomin snow’s gone today sadly.

dontdisturbmenow · 10/01/2021 09:22

You're 52, not 82! Of course you can still do it all, why would you question it unless you have chronic health issues?

I'm the same age and still run 10k every couple of weeks faster than most 18yo. I learned to rollerblade last year and love it.

I don't feel anywhere close to being too old to do whatever I want. You only got a bruise because you misjudged the equipment required for the activity!

DimidDavilby · 10/01/2021 09:25

If you had visited a hospital recently I doubt you would want to be risking your limbs like that.

chairthistle · 10/01/2021 09:29

Yanbu, in fact yabu if you don't.

TeapotCollection · 10/01/2021 09:32

I’m late 40s and I wouldn’t hesitate to go if I got the chance

And I’d build a snowman 😁

Thatnameistaken · 10/01/2021 10:29

Well thats 'almost' unanimous and yes I will dig out the sledge in advance of the next time. Although my plaggy bag was way faster than the standard sledge.

Thank you all, the aches, pains and bruises were almost making me doubt myself for a minute Grin

I wouldn't let my mum sledge yesterday. She's 72 and says I'm a big meanie but after watching my son wipe out on the slope I reckon that sledging grannies are a problem the NHS could do without at the moment. (Before anyone worries about meeting elderly relatives in lockdown, we live together).

user1471505494 · 10/01/2021 10:43

I actually think you were being unreasonable but ONLY because of the fact hospitals are really struggling. We have a very hilly nature reserve near us and when it snows it is full of people sledging. We are having to open the gates for ambulances at least once every snowy day and several times have had to assist with landing the air ambulance
