What would be the UK equivalent of storming the Capitol?

We’ve had protestors in the house of commons but I don’t remember it being serious, like the situation in the US. I don’t really have a good grip on US politics or how the two systems compare.
What sort of storming / uprising here would be similarly serious?

Protesters in Parliament, but with guns.

I think the big difference between storming and protesting is the armed element, even if its bats and things

Storming the State Opening of Parliament and trying to kidnap the Queen. The three most senior figures in the line of succession after Trump - VP Mike Pence, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Grassley were all in the Capitol for the Electoral College count.

Breaking into Parliament en masse, armed and fully prepared to batter security guards to death.

It's fucking disgraceful.

Krazynights34 · 10/01/2021 01:14

Can we just not think about this. It’s disgusting what happened in America. Do we have to perpetuate it?

Zaphodstowel · 10/01/2021 01:28

Sorry @Krazynights34, I’m just trying to get my head around it. Seems to me that even though it was bad to break in, the thing that makes it serious is that it was the president who told them to, and because it was linked to an election?

“The thing that makes it serious is that it was the president who told them to, and because it was linked to an election?”

Yep. Because of the odd way the US runs its elections, if the Electoral College count - what was happening on Weds in the Capitol - hadn’t taken place, then the President would have been chosen by a vote in each House and it is very likely that Trump would have won.

So there are very serious questions to be asked about whether this was a deliberate attempt by the President to prevent the count from finishing. It is to the credit of Mike Pence that he insisted on finishing the count.

Zaphodstowel · 10/01/2021 01:44

Funny how there’s levels of decency, and even though I completely disagree with Pence’s beliefs and politics in just about every way, he has some level of integrity and desire to do the right thing for his country. Trump just keeps crashing through every level...

I believe his politics are awful but he showed great bravery - have you seen the clip of the mob shouting “Hang Mike Pence” at the doors? And they’d brought a noose and a gallows. No-one would have blamed him for leaving for his own safety.
