Is 40 too late to make a significant change to weight/shape?

I’ve always been totally on/off with commitment to fitness and health and am now 40, more uncomfortable with myself than ever but feel increasingly like I’ve left it too late.
I’m disappointed with myself as I’ve never let myself be properly happy in my own skin and while I’m totally preoccupied with it i just don’t make the changes needed.
Would love to hear from anyone else who has actually made a significant life style change post 40 😃

@ReallySpicyCurry I'm lucky that my gym is a 5 minute walk from my house, but obviously at the minute it's closed! I have adjustable dumbells at home and by focusing on technique, slowing down and doing more reps I can keep up a reasonable routine at home!

I do around an hour 5 times a week which I appreciate is a commitment but I waste way more time than that scrolling the internet so I try to see it like that 😆

@MiddlesexGirl because I took it slowly and focused on weight training I haven't had any loose skin apart from some on my stomach but that's mostly from childbirth anyway. My boobs have deflated definitely though which is the only downside 🤣

Started to lose weight at 39, and a year later (when 40), was 4 stone lighter. It was mostly diet (calorie counting, substituting carbs when I could), with regular (but not alot) of exercise. While the exercise was minimal on a calorie burn scale, it helped me reduce/stop binge eating, as gave a 'buzz' at the end', which meant I didnt feel to needed to have naughty snacks etc.

Keys for me:

  • Motivation: More active, healthier for young kids
  • Plan: Plan your food, including treats and stick to plan (no eating the kids food/leftovers!). You then look forward to what you plan and enjoy it, rather than think what you cant have.

Definitely not too late. I'm 43 and lost 22kg over the second half of last year with interval fasting taking me from obese to a normal Bmi. I started jogging in November and can run 10k without stopping. Jogging has really had an impact on my body shape - my thighs and upper arms look good if I do say so myself😂

It's possible but there are no quick results. It's the sticking to it that's the hardest thing.

I was borderline obese at 39 I don't have many photos of me back then but I found this one, where I'm clearly hiding behind a clipboard. I decided to lose the weight and by chance 7 months later found my 'sport.' I'm very fit and active now at 42 and have such a different relationship with my body.

Never too late, I lost 9.5 between 44 and 46

LadyOfTheFlowers · 12/01/2021 13:26

I'm 37 and have gone from an 18 to a 12 over the last year

ginghamtablecloths · 12/01/2021 13:31

It's not too late. I was nearly 11 stone which at 5'1" is a lot. I've got down to 9st 7lbs which is within normal bounds. I'm 66 and it took time and an iron will-power. If I can do it so can you. Good luck.

Veterinari · 12/01/2021 13:35

What do you do @alittleprivacy ?
That's a great transformation

alittleprivacy · 12/01/2021 14:16

@Veterinari
Roller and inline skating. I either roller skate that the rink or inline skate outdoors. And I do some ballet strength and flexibility at home to make me better at certain figure skating elements. I just absolutely love it as it feels more like play than exercise. (Though I've also come to love the feeling of exercise and am doing cardio workouts at home now as the rink is shut for lockdown and the weather is awful.)

Janaih · 12/01/2021 14:23

40 and have lost 3.5 stone in lockdown 1 cutting out wine and biscuits and doing davina dvds and Joe wicks hiit workouts.

Aj1400 · 12/01/2021 14:26

No.
My mum lost 4 stone via slimming world last year.
It's completely changed her outlook on life.
Still not an exercise nut, but it's helped her do more, which keeps her more active, and therefore maintains weight.(she's nearing 60).

teawamutu · 12/01/2021 16:03

Exactly a year ago (aged 44) I was 2.5 stone heavier and two dress sizes larger.

Started MyFitnessPal, Couch to 5k and Yoga with Adriene.

Still doing the yoga and counting the calories (second nature now, I just needed to stop eating crap I didn't need or even really want). And have utterly startled myself by completing C25k and continuing to run.

I hate running but I'm really proud that I'm fitter than I've ever been in my mid 40s.

You can do it!

justilou1 · 14/01/2021 00:17

I thought I’d better add some proof photos to spur you on. The photo below was me in my late 30’s.
I packed even more weight on after that before I started my weight loss in my 40’s. The photo below is me now aged 48. I feel a billion years younger and happier than I did in the photo above.
