To feel weird in Glastonbury

I moved about a half hour’s drive from Glastonbury a few years ago but have only visited the town itself once. I hated it. It just felt uncomfortable and a bit sinister, and I couldn’t wait to leave. I’ve not felt that way anywhere else, I mean there are places I like more than others of course but this was just a really strong sense of “I want to get out of here”. Would be interested to know if anyone else has felt this way? Or about anywhere else?

Scarborough felt sinister to me. Was a hot sunny day but the place felt dark

I live in Corsham ,Wiltshire....often go to Glastonbury, absolutely love it ! The welcome of dogs, good cafes , eccentric shops, we top up with Joss Sticks ...The Tor ...Its different and you feel you can just be yourself without feeling judged ...met many friendly people !

Far too many mystic tat shops in Glastonbury. We liked Malvern, but there's not a great deal there.

Bere Alston in Devon. Tiny village just off the moors. Had to clear dh aunts house after she passed. Didn't have a decent nights sleep the whole time we was there. And I'm sure I could hear a low buzz whenever we was in the village.

I felt like that about Frome.

@Toomanyparsnips

Feel like this about hebden bridge - I'm quite "alternative" for want of a better word, so in theory I should feel right at home there, but it gives me the fear.
I believe Hebden Bridge has a big suicide problem.

@thefemaleJoshLyman I agree Walsingham is the creepiest place I have ever been. Constantly felt like they might still do witch burning there.

Glastonbury is a close second Grin

The festival is in on a farm at Pilton which is a drive from Glastonbury. The town is strange but there are some nice normal people there!

funtimefrank · 09/01/2021 17:56

My dad hated Stroud and he was the least woo person ever.

My dd hates Avebury manor, especially the garden. She is fine around the stones but she got really wobbly in the garden (she was only 7 the first time and a pretty down to earth kid).

I haven't been to Glastobury since I was a little kid and keep saying to dh we should go. I know heaps of people who think it feels awful so I'm curious.

I love Bath, Whitby, indifferent to totness and Malvern.

I’m now making a list of all these places that people don’t like (as I love Glastonbury and Frome) so I can visit them in the summer 🤣

We live in the SW, have never felt anything weird in Exeter (dd wants to go to uni there), haven’t felt anything negitive anywhere here really, we visited Avebury last summer for the first time and didn’t really like it but not in a ‘bad vibe’ kind of way.

FredWinnie · 09/01/2021 17:59

I've never been to Glastonbury but two places really rattled me.

The first place has been mentioned by pp - Tintagel
That place was scary, ominous and it actually felt dangerous

The other place was Lancaster - not scary at all, but gloomy and suffocating

You can rent my cottage in Walsingham! 😄
Lovemusic33 · 09/01/2021 18:03

I’m googling Walsington now 🤣 it sounds interesting.

There was only 1 shop that freaked me out a bit- it was a witchcraft shop that sold vials of period blood 😱

Nowt wrong with a vial of someone else's healing period blood. Tis all connected with the cycle of the moon! 😂

Ihatefish · 09/01/2021 18:05

I find Edinburgh v creepy. I had to be let out of the vaults there as I felt like something sinister was watching me.

chloworm · 09/01/2021 18:05

@Lovemusic33 it's tiny but beautiful. Close to coast which is lovely but quite rah in summer. If you want any tips, let me know!

Coffeeisnecessary · 09/01/2021 18:06

I love that area but it does have an unusual feeling. I'm interested if anyone has any positive or negative views of nearby Wells? I am not woo but the atmosphere is so peaceful there, I love it. I agree with a pp thay Glastonbury atmosphere reminds me of Lewes in Sussex.

ssd · 09/01/2021 18:07

This is so interesting, I've never been but like hearing about it.

CrunchyCarrot · 09/01/2021 18:08

Oh dear, I loved Bath, Malvern (though not much in shops there) and Exeter (disappointed by lack of seafood in the latter, but that's about it)! Never felt any weirdness at all. Haven't been to Glastonbury, perhaps I'd like it? Grin

There was a great shop in Glastonbury that sold weird taxidermy as well as other tat, when we went last summer it had gone, my kids were upset as they liked the weird taxidermy (it was several animal put together to make another animal 🤣). I haven’t seen the witchcraft shop.
IceIceCoffee · 09/01/2021 18:08

Bodcastle has been mentioned here my experience was the complete opposite I loved it and felt at home

Hugoslavia · 09/01/2021 18:08

Walsingham is a very eerie place. I find that there is a correlation between eerie and bleak/enclosed place, plus the edition of groups of strange people wandering around.

Echobelly · 09/01/2021 18:09

Oh, I liked it and had rather a positive feeling for it. Yeovil, however....

It looks really pretty and full of history. Hopefully we will be allowed to travel by the summer and I can visit.

Hugoslavia · 09/01/2021 18:10

@Lovemusic33

Oh, I do love a bit of weird taxidermy!!
