To feel weird in Glastonbury

Wellsbells · 09/01/2021 15:33

I moved about a half hour’s drive from Glastonbury a few years ago but have only visited the town itself once. I hated it. It just felt uncomfortable and a bit sinister, and I couldn’t wait to leave. I’ve not felt that way anywhere else, I mean there are places I like more than others of course but this was just a really strong sense of “I want to get out of here”. Would be interested to know if anyone else has felt this way? Or about anywhere else?

I can't stand Bath though. So bloody twee. And the bus drivers are the rudest I've ever encountered.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/01/2021 16:18

Never felt anything weird in Glastonbury. Live near enough to visit occasionally. I love watching people there. All sorts of stuff going on. The Abbey is worth visiting. I find it really peaceful.

Placemarking.

Libertybells1 · 09/01/2021 16:19

Yep, I felt the same OP. I've only been there once and it was with my Mum. She's about as woo as you get and definitely on the hippy dippy side, whereas I'm not. We both felt that Glastonbury was strangely sinister and couldn't wait to get the hell out of there. It's very odd.

WaterAndTheWild · 09/01/2021 16:19

I love Glastonbury!! I live in Kent but go at least once a year - I’m definitely woo though

Lucieintheskye · 09/01/2021 16:19

DH and I visited Glasto last winter and stayed in a cottage that definitely had an eerie feel. We aren't particulalrly 'woo-woo' but I'm interested in hearing about that sort of thing. Everytime we walked out the front door a cat crossed our path and spooked us out and the living room felt freezing even with the fire on so we sat in the kitchen.

Definitely a weird feeling, not necessarily bad or scary but uncomfortable. We left 6 days early and the lady we rented it from wasn't phased in the slightest.

The hill with the tower on top is weird. If you take photos as you walk away from it, the tower, which is on the top of the hill, sinks down the hill.

wfrances · 09/01/2021 16:20

I've been twice and loved it both times. Actually I felt the opposite to you , very calm and peaceful.

That’s Glastonbury Tor.

We went to Totnes in the summer as people told me “if you like Glastonbury you will love Totnes”, I was a bit disappointed, it was nothing like Glastonbury and the high street is on a steep hill. It was a ok place to visit but I think I was expecting it to be like a bigger Glastonbury and it wasn’t at all, they do have a good fudge shop though.

Sumpu · 09/01/2021 16:22

Yes I felt exactly the same when I visited a few years ago; I left feeling a bit depressed. Another place that leaves me feeling cold is Frome in Somerset - the place sends shivers down my spine. Something really off about the place.

IfTheSockFits · 09/01/2021 16:23

I feel a sense of brooding uneasiness in Malvern.

Premiumm · 09/01/2021 16:23

And then there's that ruined building with the floor submerged under a few feet of water and people bathing in it, by candlelight.

33goingon64 · 09/01/2021 16:23

Had a lovely day there a couple of years ago. Bought things in a retro toy shop, had lunch in a tea room which was much nicer than it looked from the outside, walked up the Tor and had an ice cream sundae back in the same tea room afterwards. Didn't get a woo feeling. My best friend grew up there and loves it.

Exeter. Every time I've been there I've left thinking that the Devil lives there.
Yes I agree about Exeter - felt a bit Twilight Zone to me.
BikeRunSki · 09/01/2021 16:24

DM lives about 20 mins away. Most people would describe me as a bit of a hippy, but I really don’t like Glastonbury. Seems very “commercialised fake hippy”, with lots of places cashing in on its reputation the town smells of patchouli (a smelli don’t really like) and the Tor reeked of pee. All my visits to Glastonbury town have been tinged with negativity.

There is a useful b&q though.

DramaAlpaca · 09/01/2021 16:25

Fascinating thread.

reefedsail · 09/01/2021 16:25

Fell air in Glastonbury. I reckon that's why they built the Abbey- to cleanse it, but that fell down.

Premiumm · 09/01/2021 16:25

Another highlight was the public toilets where music starts playing when you lock the door. Best public toilets ever.

lidoshuffle · 09/01/2021 16:25

Stroud and Port Isaac are my unsettling places.

wejammin · 09/01/2021 16:26

I live in the north west and have visited Glastonbury 3 times, I felt totally calm and at peace there, and wished I could stay forever. My DC however all cried on and off all day for no reason so clearly they didn't agree!

megletthesecond · 09/01/2021 16:27

anne there's a cursed ring in The Vyne.

GarlicSoup · 09/01/2021 16:28

Hutton Buscel near Scarborough and Haworth give me the same vibe OP.

I love Glastonbury, and we often go there but visited Gloucester last year and all I could feel was despair pressing down on me. As soon as the train left I felt fine again so I'm really glad that other people have this feeling about places too.

I feel really unsettled in Whitby
