Are you going out for exercise?

I feel stupid asking this but as the COVID rate is now up to 1 in 15 in some parts of London...are people still going out for exercise? I had planned a forest walk with my DC today but now I’m wondering if I’m being irresponsible? We know the virus doesn’t hang around in the air but the message seems so clearly focused on STAY AT HOME. Exercise is allowed, I know, but it seems at odds with the stay at home message. Maybe the new variant does hang around in the air? Oh I’m being hysterical aren’t I? Tell me to get a grip and go out please.

Oh god, yes this "family groups spread across the whole pathway,".

I am forever bellowing at my children to keep left, and then you get whole families aimlessly wandering four abreast taking up the path. The gov should send out a "keep left!" message.

frustrationcentral · 10/01/2021 11:44

@Oysterbabe

The people that wind me up when I'm out are the couples that will not stop holding hands and go single file for anything.
Yes! Or families who all walk in a long row along the pavement so you end up in the mud HmmGrin
WankPuffins · 10/01/2021 11:46

No.

But I'm very lazy and to be honest I hardly left the house anyway before covid.

RMRM · 10/01/2021 11:47

No, I'm in one of those heavily infected areas. The pavements are full of non distancers and the parks are rammed. I'll start again when infection rates drop again. Plus it's bloody freezing. I could walk up and down my garden, but it's a swamp until March.

I have something I need to do in Feb that requires physical fitness, so I'll be avoiding all unnecessary risk until then, however small. Also quite aware that if I have an accident, the hospitals won't necessarily be able to treat me swiftly.

samandpoppysmummy · 10/01/2021 12:22

I go for a walk every day.

CouldBeOuting · 10/01/2021 12:26

Yes. I’m in SE London and go out every day that I am not in school. DH and I just came back from a 7 mile walk predominantly in woods and parkland. It was lovely.

Looobyloo · 10/01/2021 12:28

I'm in West yorkshire and I have never seen as many people out and about as long as I've lived here. Lots of cars driving up to the tops as well so their children can go sledging. The roads are also as busy.
Lock down? What lock down?!

Chanjer · 10/01/2021 12:54

I haven't during this lockdown but that's only cos it's cold and shit

I am just concentrating on biscuits

alliejay81 · 10/01/2021 13:04

I've stopped going to parks and just walk round the block now. I live walking distance of a very nice park but it's busy and filled with people breaking the law. Same with the local NT places. I find seeing loads of people breaking the law has a worse impact on my MH than the MH benefit I get from going on a walk!

Obviously, some of my perceived rule breakers might be multi-generational households etc, but not all of them can be!

You are one of them!
annevonkleve · 10/01/2021 15:38

@Lazypuppy

I give as much space as i can, i'm not gonna suddenly dart into the middle of a road where there are cars though🤦‍♀️

If i am running toward someone walking, why am i expected to run into the path of cars but they aren't expected to move space too? Its not solely my responsibility to create a 2m space.

As i said, i give as much space as i can, that includes running on the grass verges next to the pavements.

Guarantee if i said i just walked for my exercise people wouldn't be having a go.

This is why gyms need to be open. There is badically zero transmission then all us pesky runners would be off the pavements 😂

We need parkrun back - then we'd all be in the same place on a Saturday morning and out of everyone else's way!
Looobyloo · 10/01/2021 15:43

I'm a delivery driver so need to be out and about to deliver peole their shit essential items!

FrangipaniBlue · 10/01/2021 22:32

Yes running three times a week and open water swimming in the lakes twice a week.

Also walking the dog, but that's not really exercise for me.

KeepSmiling89 · 10/01/2021 22:34

I'm going out 3x a week for a half hour run...re-doing couch to 5k.

KeepSmiling89 · 10/01/2021 22:35

Oh, I'm in Scotland so not sure if its relevant to this thread, but thought I'd share for info :)

@TalkSenseIntoMe
As a family who can’t ship and rely on delivery drivers, thank you SO MUCH,
We try, very hard, to order essentials, not shit 😁

DenisetheMenace · 10/01/2021 22:40

Shop, not ship !

JaceLancs · 10/01/2021 22:44

If the weather isn’t too awful I like to have a walk and bit of fresh air most days
Sometimes I’ll even get a takeaway coffee - daren’t sit down just in case I get arrested though
I am still working in office in a very demanding role dealing mainly with people who are already in crisis

Writerandreader · 10/01/2021 22:49

I cannot believe people don't go outside. You need sunlight fresh air and exercise to stay on good physical health!

Covid thrives.. Literally... On poor health. It is directly linked with diabetes obesity and poor health overall as well as lack of vitamin D.

Covid does not hang about in the air. You will not get covid going to the park.

tinyme77 · 10/01/2021 22:51

1 in 15? Really?

Writerandreader · 10/01/2021 22:53

And growing teens and children staying indoors! That is staggering to me. My 7 Yr old needs 2 hours outdoors running jumping playing. His mental health deteriorated badly in the last lockdown. Do people realise that in Scotland outdoor activity is encoriaged and children exempt from household mixing when outdoors so they can play. Because it is far far safer outdoors.

Even opening windows indoors reduces transmission by 70 per cent. You are not going to get covid outside.

Writerandreader · 10/01/2021 22:55

Before covid we had in the UK the u healthiest and fattest children in europe. 1 in 3 11 Yr olds is obese in the UK. That is also a pandemic! I cannot imagine my children's mental state if they spent more than a day indoors.

GreenlandTheMovie · 10/01/2021 23:05

anonkleve We need parkrun back - then we'd all be in the same place on a Saturday morning and out of everyone else's way!

Don't under-estimate the hatred that some people feel towards runners. My former local parkrun had to relocate because a few people complained to the council about the sight of runners doing parkrun on a Saturday morning along a near deserted every wide beachfront. Long before covid.

I can imagine a lot more complaints about parkrun post covid.

Bluethrough · 10/01/2021 23:10

You should try cycling!

If i can drive miles to a garden centre and mix it up with the very same vulnerable people we are supposed to be staying in to protect, then i'll ride my bike, on my own, for as long as i like.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 10/01/2021 23:11

Yes, I walk to the office, central London.
My route is nearly all back streets, hardly see anyone. I'm the only person in the office, preserves my sanity.
