... to ask if you've ever followed a piece of advice given to you on MN in real life

Lots of people post questions, lots of people post replies. Just wonder if anyone actually follows up or acts on this advice in real life? A few things I did

  • unfollowed some older "friends" posting really toxic political stuff on social media. I get a lot less annoyed!
  • actually count the number of units of alcohol I drink per week, and stay to my set limit

There are a few more pieces of advice I've also followed on the relationship side of things that helped me too.

MN once helped me name my business (NC for that one!). Not long after I started trading a woman approached me in person, said she'd posted on the MN thread, and wished me the best of luck ShockGrin

When I found out my DH was cheating and I wanted to leave I got AMAZING advice that has actually led to me getting fair maintenance and ensuring I wasn't screwed over financially. I'll never forget the posters who helped.

AntiHop · 09/01/2021 10:41

Yep got some bras on order thanks to a recent thread.

Lemmeout · 09/01/2021 11:02

Yep loads. Helped me stand up for myself and have self respect I never had before.

GarlicMonkey · 09/01/2021 11:12

I always put my duvet sets in one of the pillowcases after washing them now. Haven't 'lost' a pillowcase since. Best MN bit of advice ever.

Yes, when my son had a cold when he was 6 weeks old I thought calpol may help in a panic. Someone told me to turn the shower on to its highest heat and let steam fill the bathroom to help clear his nose. It really helped.

DrCoconut · 09/01/2021 11:16

Using soap rather than shower gel for sweatiness. It works.

DorisDances · 09/01/2021 11:19

'Smile and nod' has been a very helpful mantra I have learned here.

CaraDuneRedux · 09/01/2021 11:19

Followed the instructions for reverse parking - bloody brilliant, don't do it any other way now.

Discovered that cling film has little tabs to keep the roll in place... Game changer!

If you have a disgusting limescaled toilet.
Don’t bleach it and make it look clean.

Empty all the water out and leave on harpic power plus. Then it’s actually clean.

copernicium · 09/01/2021 11:23

Shine my sink, store sheets inside pillowcases and cut off my toxic mother. Never been happier!

SpikeWithoutASoul · 09/01/2021 11:28

9 years ago when my baby would not stop feeding and couldn’t sleep unless she was on me, some incredibly kind women gave me lots of advice and ideas. Even at 2am someone would patiently and sympathetically answer. It made all the difference to me in those early dark days.

Now I have a huge 9yo, I don’t pay much attention to those boards, but I love to know that kind women on mumsnet are still saving first time mums in the middle of the night. Like an extra emergency service.

steppemum · 09/01/2021 11:31

yes.
Not specific advice, but rather following whole arguments debates and trends.
I have one dd who is declared non-binary and one who is now telling me she is trans.
Reading mn has helped me enormously to understand the issue, and to have constructive things to say to them.

On the other hand, I have now had to make a decision to not read those threads, as primarily what my dds need is love and support, and not politics.

There ar eother things too. Understanding so much more about relationships. I happen to have a great one and so did my parents, but reading on here has made me sharper and more aware of what goes on in other people's houses.
Recently I have been listening a lot to someone whose marriage is a mess, and as I was listening to her, I realised she was being gaslighted. A term I had never heard of before mn.

Kindlingwood · 09/01/2021 11:43

Definitely the bed cover set into a pillow case one. I’m not a neat person, so they are a bit screwed up in there, but I have everything on hand. Total game changer!

CaraDuneRedux · 09/01/2021 11:47

Though I should add: things that MN suggested that didn't work.

Coke down the toilet to remove limescale. All that happens is you end up with nastily brown-stained limescale.

FortunesFavour · 09/01/2021 11:50

Yep, bought myself a Eufy robovac based on the fan club reviews on here. They weren’t wrong, it’s brilliant 👍

bathorshower · 09/01/2021 11:51

Yes, I asked for tips caring for DH after a medical procedure, and was given some good ideas.

pastaparadise · 09/01/2021 11:52

Being told there's an arrow on the car dashboad pointing to which side the petrol cap is on. Really helpful!

Not necessarily changed my behaviour (yet), but realising dp is often really unreasonable (and it's not my fault) helps me emotionally.

Mintjulia · 09/01/2021 11:57

Yes, apple cider vinegar to get rid of a wart on my knee, that had been completely unperturbed by everything the pharmacist could suggest.

Vinegar, cotton wool and tape every night for a month and it has gone completely Smile

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 09/01/2021 12:25

Cooking bacon in the oven. Bloody brilliant idea - no idea why I'd never thought if it before reading it on here.

Just don't understand this at all. Makes me wonder where people keep their sheets.

I have a chets of drawers. wash sheets. Fold sheets, put in a pile, put pile in drawer. Puyt next set on top of/next to the first.

When I change sheets, I go to the drawer, and there are the sheets, in a pile with the duvetr cover sheet and pillow cases.

What happens in people's linen cupboards in between? Do your childrne throw everything out on the floor and mix it up? I jsut don't get it.
Plus, it is a real squeeze to get a kongsize duvet cover and King size sheet plus 3 pillow cases into one pillow case, and they end up squished. More creased on the bed.

I have never understood the love for this on mn.

steppemum · 09/01/2021 15:00

sorry kindlingwood not having a go at you, just I see this all the time on here and i don't get it

hamsterchump · 09/01/2021 15:03

Yes two in fact! I put cheese in my tea but I found it hard to enjoy it what with all the shaking and crying to be honest.
