Failed dry January already

BertyBotts · 09/01/2021 09:57

My goal for this year was to get in shape and lose weight. I started off really well, eating better and exercising most days last week. Also decided to do dry January after drinking so much over Christmas.

Last night I caved in. Not sure why, probably lockdown stress and the simple fact it was the weekend. Opened a bottle of wine and ended up finishing it. Today I feel rotten. I've got headache and all I want to do is eat shit and be lazy. I've said it before but I really think I want to cut alcohol out altogether, it does nothing but make me feel rubbish and prevents me from achieving my goals.

Why oh why do I allow this to happen? Anyone else failed already?

January is grim enough why do people do this, why not just stop see how long you go fit then praise yourself if you go a week, or be happy to are differently for one meal.

ElizaLaLa · 09/01/2021 10:42

I can understand you having a drink . It has been a stressful January so far but you drank the whole bottle by yourself??

🙄🙄🙄

Stonerosie67 · 09/01/2021 10:46

I've not caved in yet, despite a funeral and working in school, but I've eaten anything that can't run fast enough to escape!
Just polished off fried eggs on toast, omg it was so good!
Don't stress it, op, just do the best you can x

Somebodyotherthanme · 09/01/2021 10:46

@Liftmusic Flowers back at you.
We're all in the same boat, dh had just sent a text saying " It's Saturday, I've bought a bottle of Cava and I'm bringing home a curry after work" Grin
Baby steps ladies, baby steps Grin

Matrons · 09/01/2021 10:46

Yes don't give up. You only failed 1 day, you succeeded 8 and counting. Dust yourself off and carry on. Don't fall into the mental trap of thinking I've failed so there's no point... That way lies madness.

It's only 1 bottle of wine. Start fresh today

AndcalloffChristmas · 09/01/2021 10:47

I’ve stuck to dry Jan so far - since the 28th Dec in fact as I was ill over NY.

However we had a Chinese last night and I’ve been eating Christmas chocolate at every opportunity. So done nothing on the healthy eating front that I promised myself!

I agree with pps, just pick it up from today.

SadderThanEeyore · 09/01/2021 10:48

Disclaimer, not rtft but how about some trying some non-alcoholic wine? Several members of my family have stopped drinking through choice and each of them has a chosen non-alcoholic drink.
The issue with wine, to my knowledge, is that the 0% tend to be sweeter. If you like dry Nosecco or similar might do a better job.
You can relax with a glass of wine and none of the guilt.
Ps it's good that you feel like shit as it discourages repeating the exercise!!

Fluids and fresh air will help

LittleBearPad · 09/01/2021 10:51

So start again today if you want to. Don’t let feeling like you’ve failed mean you write off the whole plan.

Succeeding the majority of the time is better than seeking perfection and giving up totally if you don’t achieve it.

(And it’s quite easy to drink a bottle of wine for all the Pearl clutchers)

Winterpaw · 09/01/2021 10:57

Op download the Try January app there's a useful blog on there about staying on track and managing cravings. Just pick up from today and move on. You had a drink last night, you feel like crap today. Doesn't mean you've ruined Dry January at all. Don't give up, cutting down us better than not at all.

To the PP who commented about a "whole" bottle of wine, that's not a helpful comeback to an OP who's clearly made inroads into cutting down on her consumption.

Weepingwillows12 · 09/01/2021 10:59

Me too op. The shitstorm of homeschooling, dlbusiest time of year in my job plus trying to sort out a post op care package for my elderly parent who needed an emergency op and is now immobile for a few months got to me and I caved. Drank and did no exercise and feel like crap today.

I am just going to pretend yesterday didnt happen, do double exercise today and no more drinking.

sunnyday1976 · 09/01/2021 11:08

I nearly opened the wine last night. I'd bought a bottle of non alcoholic pear cider and it honestly was the worst thing I've ever tried to drink Grin, it ended up down the sink. I had a non alcoholic lager which was better.

Just try again from today. I reckon, at the moment, getting to 8 days is quite an achievement!!

HaveITheRightToHoldYou · 09/01/2021 11:10

I failed dry January last year but I only drank in 3 separate occasions which was good going.

I’ve now done 7 months AF. Just start again OP, no need to write off the whole rest of the month.

newyearnewname123 · 09/01/2021 11:16

I think you are trying to do too many changes at once. Pick one thing and stick with it this year then tackle another next year.

So do you want to prioritise not drinking, getting fit, losing weight or eating well?

If it's getting fit then give yourself a goal of how many times to exercise a week and really try hard to stick to that.

If it's eating well, do menu planning and commit to to healthy meals a number of times a week.

If you do pick fitness you might find you are inclined to drink less anyway as it's not much fun with a hangover.

I did not drinking last year. Am committing to improving my house this year, I find cleaning routines incredibly hard to stick to.

DuzzyFuck · 09/01/2021 11:16

@squeezeapplesmakejuice

I can understand you having a drink . It has been a stressful January so far but you drank the whole bottle by yourself??

Oh calm down. Some people sip a glass of wine a week, some have no problem polishing off a whole bottle over the course of an evening. There's no need to clutch your pearls about it.

OP get up, have a painkiller and a load of water, and start dry January again today. Don't be hard on yourself x

TrialOfStyle · 09/01/2021 11:18

Don’t write off your hard work because of one day. Get back on it again today (cook a proper breakfast) and have another great week.

When you reach the end of Jan, even if you’ve ended up drinking once a week, you’ll still look back and realise you’ve made a huge change.

Mally2020 · 09/01/2021 11:20

OP don't beat yourself up a lot of us are trying, a bottle isn't a lot no. There are just vile, judgmental and disrespectful people on here. F* off you lot.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 09/01/2021 11:57

Maybe get rid of all the alcohol from the house and don’t buy any more if you can’t go without it.

A whole bottle is a lot of alcohol in one go for one person. Not sure what’s so pearl clutching about that.

TheGoogleMum · 09/01/2021 12:23

I wouldn't beat yourself up, we all have to give up a lot at the moment as it is, alcohol may be a step too far!

Somebodyotherthanme · 09/01/2021 12:29

Oh give over, that's a completely out of order comment. Don't turn this thread into insult central, it's not in the least bit helpful.
mumnowformerrockstar · 11/01/2021 12:46
@squeezeapples Clutches pearls. A whole bottle of wine.....
That is a lot of wine to drink alone by yourself. Nothing to do with pearls

SomewhatBored · 11/01/2021 12:51

Today I feel rotten. I've got headache and all I want to do is eat shit and be lazy.

Think about how bad you feel - perhaps write it down in detail - and remind yourself the next time you are tempted.

Start again - what counts is having a month 'dry' so your body can benefit - exactly when the month starts and finishes doesn't matter.

BertyBotts · 11/01/2021 16:25

@mumnowformerrockstar Why do you I assume I was on my own? I was with dp...who annoyingly managed to stay dry.

It may be a lot for some but over the course of 4-5 hours I really don't think 3 glasses of wine is much in terms of volume. But each to their own.

OP posts:
UserX · 11/01/2021 17:17

What annoys me is how it affects me the next day. There's no chance I'll exercise now and I'll do well not to reach for all of the carbs and chocolate!

Now you know how it makes you feel & let that inform your decision next time. Use this blip to move forward & don’t beat yourself up about it.

Winterwoollies · 11/01/2021 18:58

I’ve more or less packed in drinking. I used to love a party but I found I felt fat, sluggish and when I calculated the calories I was consuming I nearly died. So now I only have a couple of drinks on special occasions.

It took a lot to get there but it does feel good. Keep on keeping on.
