Do you use a barrier cream every change?

Sorry, not an aibu but taking advantage of the polling option.

Getting ready for baby.
Do you use a nappy barrier cream every change to prevent nappy rash or do you only use cream when nappy rash is showing.

YANBU you use nappy cream every change.
YABU only use nappy cream when nappy rash is starting.

Also, do you use a baby powder? What for?
And, if you use cloth nappies, which cream do you use.

We only used it if there was soreness. Never used baby powder (except to get sand off on the beach).

MyDiamondShoesAreTooTight · 08/01/2021 19:57

Nappy creams are a medication. They serve a purpose which is to treat sore skin.

If you use a nappy cream with no nappy rash then when they do have a nappy rash, it wont work at clearing it up as the skin will be used to the cream.

When you have a headache you take paracetamol, you don't take paracetamol everyday to make sure you don't get a headache.

Nix2020 · 08/01/2021 19:57

Only used it if a rash was appearing. I just used bepathen even with cloth nappies

MyDiamondShoesAreTooTight · 08/01/2021 19:58

And no to baby powder, it dries the skin out and is messy

Caspianberg · 08/01/2021 19:58

We use cloth nappies.
Use weleda nappy cream on the odd time he has a small rash. One tiny sample tube is still in use after 8 months.

Never used powder

MrsR87 · 08/01/2021 19:58

I have an 8 week old and have never used it yet. He’s not had nappy rash or soreness yet and my HV said it’s not a good idea to use it unless there is a problem.

Lolalovesmarmite · 08/01/2021 19:59

I use sudacrem when he has a rash, apart from that I don’t use anything. Changing the nappy regularly when wet, and as soon as it is dirty will help to prevent a lot of issues.

Slippersocks20 · 08/01/2021 20:00

We use Vaseline day to day, sudercream when sore, there is another one which health visitor recommended and is really really good we only use it when the sudercream doesn't work. It's called my expert midwife: no harm bum balm.

Havnt used powders. And while the wife never forgets Vaseline, I do. Doesn't seem to cause issues though, in the great scheme of things.

firstimemamma · 08/01/2021 20:02

https://www.babipur.co.uk/earth-conscious-baby-balm.html

We use this for about 8/10 nappy changes and nothing else the rest of the time.

Little lamb nappies and cheeky wipes. Smile

Btw the baby balm makes a great night cream for me so it's good it's multi purpose!

Stormblessed · 08/01/2021 20:03

No, just used sudocrem or a thin layer of yellow metanium if things looked sore.

catx1606 · 08/01/2021 20:08

I use sudoccrem every day, it still works if he has a rash. Recommended by a nurse so happy to keep doing it

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/01/2021 20:13

We used to use zinc-and-castor-oil cream, a very little with each change spread very thin.

The good thing was that apparently you absorb a little zinc through the skin, and it seems to ward off colds. Neither of us had a cold the entire two years of nappies with each baby! Much cheaper than zinc tablets.

Never used powder: it seemed to turn into little pebbles if it got wet, and rub the unfortunate baby and cause a nappy-rash, so we only used it for about a week with the first one and then stopped. The tin of powder hung about for months, I think it was thrown out in the end or maybe DH used it in his socks or something.

parsnipsnotsprouts · 08/01/2021 20:17

Cheap petroleum jelly for all changes apart from the middle of the night one. Never had a sore bum

Youseethethingis · 08/01/2021 20:21

Only use sudocrem after a brown nappy, just a little bit prevents issues developing. Used proper nappy rash cream the one time he has had a sore bum.
Never used powder, think it’s one of those things used by previous generations that’s are not their way out, particularly after the whole Johnson & Johnson cancer thing.

yikesanotherbooboo · 08/01/2021 20:24

Never used cream unless babies had sore bottoms which was rare.

Twickerhun · 08/01/2021 20:25

No your baby doesn’t need it.

Ginfilledcats · 08/01/2021 20:31

Only ever used something once in 7m so far: light layer of sudocrem when bum was a bit red after a lot of runny poops thanks to an allergy.

Never had acted or sore bum any other time. We change her often and use cotton balls and water unless out and don't have access, then we use the water wipes. I also dry her bum with a Muslim before putting her nappy back on

ChocOrange1 · 08/01/2021 20:33

I only use barrier cream if they're developing a rash, which is very rarely. We use cloth nappies and use childs farm nappy cream.

Flyingfreeasabird · 08/01/2021 20:35

Olive or coconut oil is good especially at the beginning to help stop the meconium from sticking. It is pretty sticky stuff! I carried on with olive oil with my first every nappy change for quite a long while, but with my second I gave it up pretty quickly. She's had a couple of instances of redness once we started weaning (my first never had any at all), but it didn't seem to bother her so I just tried to make sure it was as dry as possible before putting a new nappy on and it went away on its own in a day or so.

I think baby powder is not recommended as safe, especially if it's got talc in it.

mum11970 · 08/01/2021 20:35

3 children, never used any creams or barriers, none ever had nappy rash.

Boringnamechanging · 08/01/2021 20:36

Cloth nappies no never use cream unless there is a problem. Which we never really have unless baby poos in their sleep/car journey and we can’t/don’t change immediately. Unless we use disposables and then they do get it, the same with both children.

ShowOfHands · 08/01/2021 20:36

My Mum was obsessed with nappy creams and asked me every single time why I wasn't using one. I think it's quite old fashioned as a practice.

I never used any lotions on potions on DD who never had a single episode of nappy rash. DS had v sore episodes when teething so we used metanium as necessary.

As a rule, I'd avoid smearing anything on your baby unless strictly needed and powder isn't necessary either.

emmaluggs · 08/01/2021 20:37

With my first I did use a barrier (bepanthen) cream but he got nappy rash really easily, with my second he’s never really had nappy rash, so I’ve only ever used sudocreme on very odd occasion he’s looked sore, I’ve not used a barrier as preventative 😊

schmockdown · 08/01/2021 20:38

I didnt. Used metanium for a bad case of nappy rash after a bad case of Noro.

Glendaruel · 08/01/2021 20:38

I'm doing what they showed me in hospital, cotton wool and water for cleaning, but of vaseline then nappy on. For washing they said water and cotton wool is best for new born skin, no soap required.
