cheating on exam tomorrow

elerng · 07/01/2021 21:06

DD has an 11 plus exam tomorrow, it is for a private school and academic scholarships will be awarded based on the results.

The exam has been sent to all parents today to print out for the child tomorrow. The children will sit the exam being watched by teachers via zoom, and complete the printed out paper. The parents then need to take the paper away and send it to the school.

DH and I have different views on if cheating will happen. I don't think parents will cheat, I have to believe all parents will respect the difficult circumstances however DH does think others will cheat.

So I guess AIBU to think parents won't cheat on behalf of the child?

I definitely would!

Lalliella · 07/01/2021 21:49

They will definitely cheat. The 11+ is such an unfair system they will most likely do it without the slightest prick of conscience.

1FootInTheRave · 07/01/2021 21:49

Lots will cheat.

I'm very competitive but doubt I would cheat. When I win I want it on merits. Not much of a victory otherwise.

Would worry that the child may not actually be capable of the future lessons too.

Mine don't do an 11+, neither did I tbh. What is it for?

Uhhuhoyaye · 07/01/2021 21:50

My disillusion with the education system began about 10 years ago when my children complained that at their school certain teachers did the pupils' coursework for them.

Happymum12345 · 07/01/2021 21:50

They will cheat. Most parents want the best for their child and in the end, if it means getting into a good school for reduced fees, then they will do what needs to be done. Good on you for not cheating though!

Peachered · 07/01/2021 21:50

Oh it's the London 11+ Consortium tomorrow - it won't just be based on this paper if it's that, not at all.

Gonkytonk · 07/01/2021 21:52

There no way they won’t cheat. Moneys involved.

Shetoshe · 07/01/2021 21:53

I would absolutely cheat in these circumstances. I wouldn't tell my child I was doing it though!

BoomBoomsCousin · 07/01/2021 21:53

I think lots of parents will cheat and it's a bloody stupid way to do it. But I think the 11 plus is a bloody stupid way to organize schooling so I'm having a hard time being bothered.

Nunoftheother · 07/01/2021 21:55

@MumW

100% they will all cheat. ^this Not all but many, scholarships are too incredibly sort after for there not to be.
Although not all candidates will necessarily benefit from having their parents help them...
Firkinhavinalaugh · 07/01/2021 21:57

sil definitely “helped” dn with private 13+ exam in lockdown 1.

To the point a scholarship was offered. Granted a sporty child but definitely NOT academic by any shot and a real work,homework,reading refuser. (Prep school head was shocked so it wasn’t just me!) To be offered an academic scholarship and taking it is not going to help long run, but they felt that the sports scholarship had too many people going for it 🙇‍♀️.

So, yes, parents WILL cheat and not think anything of it!

Peachered · 07/01/2021 21:58

I still cannot think of a single scholarship that is awarded on an 11+ exam only, there are always other stages - this is one part, and it will be evident who has cheated.

I also still reckon it will be another assessment tomorrow.

BigBadVoodooHat · 07/01/2021 21:58

@samb80

I can't believe the school would actually do this - this seems completely bonkers to me!
It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Why are they being watched on Zoom? It’s pointless: they could complete another (collaborative) paper after the Zoom session and post that, or have someone off screen telling the child what to write (if they’re muted).

Is this school run by complete idiots? Confused

Daisy829 · 07/01/2021 22:00

Surely they could have set up some kind of online test paper. It shouldn’t be that hard to do. I’m surprised by the number of people thinking others will cheat. I wouldn’t cheat. I am too trusting sometimes.

xxyzz · 07/01/2021 22:01

Of course 95% of them will cheat.

Anyone who has read May Contain Nuts will know that this is just a gift to would-be cheating parents.

BBCONEANDTWO · 07/01/2021 22:01

Yes they will all cheat.

cafedesreves · 07/01/2021 22:03

They will at very least scan the paper for anything their DC won't know then talk them through it. It would be hard not to!

Monty27 · 07/01/2021 22:06

Parental instincts to protect and provide
Especially if it's there for the taking
Of course OP

Alternista · 07/01/2021 22:08

Ha. I wanna cheat at it and I don’t have a child the right age! Grin

Toptotoeunicolour · 07/01/2021 22:09

Parents will cheat but the schools they are coming from will be in contact with the headmaster and they will know who should be getting the scholarships. So it is pointless.

CloudPop · 07/01/2021 22:09

Why did the school send the exam out the night before? Of course people will cheat.

Monty27 · 07/01/2021 22:11

@Alternista

Ha. I wanna cheat at it and I don’t have a child the right age! Grin
It'll be a test of the best cheating competitors 😆
Toptotoeunicolour · 07/01/2021 22:12

At my son's school they had interviews after the exam for scholarships, with math question. Presumably they will still have those over zoom and it will become clear who has cheated.

oakleaffy · 07/01/2021 22:13

@CouchPommeFrite

Of course some parents will cheat, they sent the paper the day before which gives them time to prep their child to answer it.
This.

Some parents will do anything for their child to gain an advantage over another child for a competitive place.

If a child has aptitude, they will do well in life, whatever the outcome, cheating is not on...But will happen in the beady eyed middle classes who are in desperate competition for the better schools.

BubblyBarbara · 07/01/2021 22:13

But an 11 year old will know cheating is wrong and will know they are cheating.

The reason that 10 is the age of criminal responsibility is not just that it's when children know right from wrong, but because it's when they know to cover any misdeeds up!
