to ask which careers will be most sustainable in the future?

I'm looking for a new career after being a SAHM for 5 years, and previously in financial services (front office and latterly risk management - good money, but long hours and not workable with my family). I'm desperately brainstorming new careers, ideally something I could do mainly from home and not completely full-time. However, I'm conscious some careers have been shown to be much more sustainable in the last year. Or maybe there are careers that are going to grow a lot now? Any ideas, I'd love some pointers. I wish there was something I loved, but I don't seem to have a vocation. Thanks :)

IT
Medicine

Phlip · 07/01/2021 16:26

Haha I came on to say and IT.
Not just medicine but anything medical related - look at allied medical careers.
IT much more likely to be doable from home and there is a huge demand for highly skilled IT people.

Thanks - this is a good start

Things that are really creative/personal that IT can’t replace like psychologists/counsellors.

byebyeboyee · 07/01/2021 17:56

Bookkeeping? I know a few bookkeepers/accountants who are still doing well despite covid most of them either work part time or freelance. They are also working from home.

IT within the financial services, absolutely booming and will be for a long time as more and more new technologies emerge in that sector.

I doesn’t always mean developer either, project management, PMO, business analysis, service management etc are all professional well paid roles, but don’t require being super technical

Thinking about what we will need.....

Child Nutritionist
Nurse
SEN teachers
Psychiatrist
Counsellor
Web developers
Cyber security specialists
IT specialists
Cycle mechanics
Anything related to green energy
Foster parents

And a new head of security for the Capitol Building, Washington Grin

bimbimbap · 07/01/2021 18:22

HR as companies will always need to look after their people (or in the worst cases manage redundancies )

HouseofBrieandBanter · 07/01/2021 18:23

It was interesting to see in the first lockdown which jobs we can't function without & many are badly paid! I think there will be a shift in high earning positions as some will no longer be needed.

Some industries have really taken off in lockdown & others are struggling. I would avoid events, retail, travel industry.

HouseofBrieandBanter · 07/01/2021 18:25

I made a sideways career move into IT, I do web testing. It’s boring at times but a job with a future (I hope), I have also branched our a bit in building web pages for clients (and then testing things still work)

Am teaching myself how to write automated tests using YouTube. The world is your oyster (all the info is out there)

Procurement

Massive focus on supply chains and sustainability across lots of different industries at the moment.

BillywigSting · 07/01/2021 18:27

Nursing and elderly care.

Our population is ageing faster than we can cope with.

That doesn't just mean care work either. It could be managerial, clerical, clinical etc.

BrieAndChilli · 07/01/2021 18:29

Look at industries as well as job roles - so admin in pharmaceuticals is going to be secure than admin in a theatre for example.

CoronaIsWatching · 07/01/2021 18:29

Everything can and will be automated in the future

PhilippaArchersOlderSister · 07/01/2021 18:30

I wouldn't dismiss risk management and the related field of corporate governance. There's a shortage of skilled governance professionals and jobs are often in charities which offer more flexible working options.

Civil engineering
A good 50% of my work is about refurbishing and replacing elderly infrastructure assets rather than anything new, apart from flood/tidal defences for sea level rise.
We will always need roads, sewers and flood defences.

It is very much not a job that can be done from home though!

kidscreatemess · 07/01/2021 18:39

Occupational therapy is a good option. You and HCP with a lot more options than other careers such as physical health, mental health, children's, adults, learning disabilities etc.

It's a lovely job and easy to change settings if you didn't end up liking an area of specialism
