I found a bald patch (pic attached) in the middle of my scalp yesterday...I am a bit worried now :-(((
Does anyone know what / why this is happening?

Vitamins not nails

I found the condition 'Telogen effluvium'.

Thanks Caspah even though I'm over it now it's great to have a name!

I really need a rest and forget everything for a couple of weeks. I need to exercise, drink water and just allow myself

Definitely op. Have a rest and hopefully you can start to get back on track. Wishing you the best!

Grin thank you!

I hope time has helped ease things a little for you, it’s heartbreaking.

Thank you for starting this thread op and thank you to all the posters with the brilliant suggestions (going to be pinching a few!).

I’m 44, until quite recently I had thick, long hair (often had compliments on it), then like you I noticed some unwelcome changes, primarily thinning. I must say I was diagnosed with auto immune disease almost 2 years ago but I have been under tremendous stress (the kind that from the outside wouldn’t be interpreted as such), I always felt immense pressure and panic and it was only during a routine health check recently that they picked up my blood pressure had sky rocketed (always had the perfect readings my whole life).

They were concerning enough for me to wind up on a 24 hour blood pressure monitor, that’s when it hit me that I can’t allow myself to get so worked up about things, my results came back “satisfactory” to be redone in about 6 months but it goes to show what stress can do to your body. I’ve started taking biotin and the first thing I noticed was my nails have decided to grow again. Very excited to try the other suggestions here. I wondered about peri menopause but looking at my almost 80 year old mum with her full thick head of hair I’m not so sure!
Good luck to us all!

Underactive thyroid?
Vitamin D deficiency ? Both?
Alopecia Strata?

I suggest you get blood tests for thyroid,
and Vitamins B and D.
Try Serioxyl denser hair serum and Perfectil vitamins for hair.

Very likely a fungal infection on the scalp. Try to get some close up pictures. Can you see your GP online?

rosemary essential oil, diluted in a carrier oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, whatever you have, applied topically, seems to work for some people.

NothingIcando · 08/01/2021 00:36

Oh wow. Thanks for this lalaroo !!

@postcardfromme

Thank you so much for your thoughtful replies...they are very encouraging 😊I am under a lot of stress at work and personal life. This is a wake up call...I need to slow down and stop stressing about what I can't change. I've noticed my skin is so dry - that's probably due to wearing a mask all day! My bones are achy and squeaky! I really need a rest and forget everything for a couple of weeks. I need to exercise, drink water and just allow myself to breathe!
Losing hair, bones are achy and squeaky - peri menopause I’m afraid. Welcome to the club ! I would suggest you get your iron checked as mine was on the low side of normal when I lost my hair. Low ferritin can cause hair loss. And also get your thyroid checked.
Starbonnet123 · 08/01/2021 08:13

I started taking Morrison's nail and hair supplement as my nails were very brittle and my hair was getting thin , I must say they have worked wonders for me , my nails are stronger and my hair is getting thicker again .I am 56 and menopausal just for info 😁

Tragicroundabout · 08/01/2021 08:47

Suffered serious hair loss a few years ago - actually thought I might lose it all. Had blood tests which showed my ferritin levels had dropped through the floor. It was also after an incredibly stressful period in my life. The GP prescribed iron pills which I took for several months. Unbeknownst to me I was also perimenopausal which wouldn't have helped. Couldn't do much to change that, but took the pills was careful about what I was eating and did regular scalp massage and my hair started to grow back after six or seven months. If possible, see if your GP is prepared to do some blood tests - good luck

bluetongue · 08/01/2021 08:53

I’m 44 and about to get blood tests through my GP, partly for my thinning hair. I didn’t have thick hair to start with! I’ve become ridiculously jealous of everyone I see with thick hair.

Part of me is actually hoping I’m anaemic, vitamin deficient or have an under active thyroid. At least those can be treated and are ‘proper’ medical conditions. Knowing my luck it will be androgenetic alopecia or just one of those things that come with middle age and Sad

DrumsPleaseandTriangleToo · 08/01/2021 09:07

As far as I understand it, 'Telogen effluvium' is an all over hair loss rather than focused on one spot. TE can be triggered by all sorts - post viral/low iron/stress.

That spot on your head looks circular. I'm not expert but I do have a type of hair loss and in investigating the cause, I've come to get to
know about different conditions in order to rule them out. I hang out in hairloss groups, so see lots of pics. It looks a bit like alopecia areata but obv don't take my word for it. Definitely make a gp appointment. There are lots of different types of possible solutions. It can definitely be triggered by stress. So do address that if you can. Your hair looks beautiful and that spot is v small and very easy to cover with a root spray or hair fibres.
