The overuse of this word is, grim!

OP posts:

@Meowchickameowmeow

I've never heard anyone in real life use the word grim as a descriptor, I think I'd spit out my tea if they did.
I’m 60, and I’ve used it all my life.
the80sweregreat · 07/01/2021 09:40

Which words does the op use when the chips are down or things are not going that well?

ZaraW · 07/01/2021 09:41

I don't know anyone who says grim.

unmarkedbythat · 07/01/2021 09:48

Good word, grim.

What would you prefer people to say, op? Bleak? Dire? Miserable? None of them are as fitting for the current situation as grim.

It has never occurred to me that grim is in any way a notable word. I wouldn't notice if anyone used it as I use it myself all the time. Well, all the time right now anyway. This really is a grim time.
Cam2020 · 07/01/2021 09:50

I use it a lot I'm afraid!
It doesn't offend anyone : so I thought!

Are you kidding? There in not anything you can say that won't offend someone Grin

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 07/01/2021 09:57

To be fair, they did write some good fairy tales.

NoProblem123 · 07/01/2021 10:07

It’s January in another lockdown.
Nothing could be more grim.

pointythings · 07/01/2021 10:13

I prefer this kind of grim:

Grim, grim, grim. Everything's grim.
dementedma · 07/01/2021 10:15

I like grim. Used quite a lot round here

DenisetheMenace · 07/01/2021 10:16

Bollocks any better?

littlepattilou · 07/01/2021 10:17

@AwaAnBileYerHeid

Or when people say they're "howling" or "screaming" or "dying" when they apparently find something funny. Usually its something that really isn't that funny. Usually it's a teenager or a chav.
Argh! That annoys me too.. A number of people posted the spoof of 'do they know it's Christmas' on twitter last week (very funny btw if you haven't seen it, do google it and have a look!) And loads of people (mostly 15 to 25) said 'LMFAO! DYING!!!' Or 'OMG 'I AM DEAD!')

Also, I say the word 'grim' quite a bit. Nothing wrong with it IMO.

What's more, everything IS grim at the moment!!!

unmarkedbythat · 07/01/2021 10:21

Some of you would really have got behind the creation of Newspeak, wouldn't you? Grin

ComDummings · 07/01/2021 10:23

January is grim. Grim is January. We need a stronger word than grim but I like it, it’s a good word.

Bananalanacake · 07/01/2021 10:28

My dad has a friend called Graham. When he calls Graham on the phone he says it so fast it comes out as Grim. So now we call Graham 'Grim', he is pretty solemn and serious though.

draughtycatflap · 07/01/2021 10:33

The MN Grimmers can be really cunty to others on here.

ilovesooty · 07/01/2021 10:39

@ZaraW

I don't know anyone who says grim.
Neither do I.
Givemeabreak88 · 07/01/2021 10:42

It’s overused on here. I don’t hear anyone irl referring to things as “grim”

missymousey · 07/01/2021 10:47

Ooh, bleak! Good one @unmarkedbythat Think I'll use that.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/01/2021 10:55

"Grim, grim, grim. Everything's grim" - as we say in January 2021.

"Vanity of vanities; all is vanity" - as the preacher saith a very long time ago.

I suppose it does just go to prove him right that there is, indeed, nothing new under the Sun.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/01/2021 10:58

My dad has a friend called Graham. When he calls Graham on the phone he says it so fast it comes out as Grim. So now we call Graham 'Grim', he is pretty solemn and serious though.

For the same reason, you hardly get any babies born in NI called Nathan - as any registrar worth their salt insists that they do have to be called something.

52andblue · 07/01/2021 10:58

I use 'grim' when necessary (which it IS in general and my life atm)
Also 'hard' 'harsh' 'bleak' & 'dire'.

The word I hate (and is overused) is Cunt. Not in a pearl-clutching way but I hate that it is an amazing part of a woman that is used as an insult.

the80sweregreat · 07/01/2021 11:21

I hate the C word and I can't even use it about people I detest!

1WayOrAnother2 · 07/01/2021 11:30

Grim is normal in my world (though I do spend much time in dusty novels from other eras) but I agree with @52andblue on 'cunt' - I've never understood how it works as an insult.

(Surely being named after something exciting, with rose-like appearance and almost secret should be praise? Shouldn't it be a popular baby name rather than a term of abuse? )

InTheSnow · 07/01/2021 11:36

Someone once said to me re Jimmy Saville "God this is all so grim".

Until then grim was a way of describing a power cut during the Beast from the East or the mower breaking down and a spare part not arriving until two weeks on Tuesday.

Grim is certainly not "Savillesque" which is a completely new word in itself and which should be reserved for the most perverse of situations and people.
