Dry socket?

Apologies for posting in aibu but I'm sure anyone who has dry socket phobia will understand! Lower molar extracted yesterday, wound stitched. Only bit on gauze for a few minutes as per advice of oral surgeon. Very painful all day yesterday but much better this morning. Has started to get a bit niggly again this evening when smiling etc but not too bad. Had a look in mirror and saw the site looks grey/black. Cue frantic googling which shows the dreaded dry socket. Can any dentists/ fellow extracted advise please?

And absolutely no straws. Nothing that creates suction in the mouth.

Thanks for the reassurance guys. Still haven't dared eat though just in case food gets stuck! Have really worked myself into a tizz over it all. Getting a bit of pain in my neck also on the same side of extraction which is making me a bit worried.

I had a tooth out a short while ago, your socket looks fine to me. You're going to have pain for a few days, that's normal.

Here's mine around day 3.

When you feel ready to eat don’t eat rice!!

I had dry socket pretty recently following a hour long , very tricky extraction of lower wisdom tooth.
I did everything right post the extraction (was absolutely terrified of dry socket) didn’t eat, drink or rinse for 24 hours, not a smoker, not on hormonal contraceptives etc (all risk factors).
By day three following extraction the pain was getting worse and most noticeable was the awful taste and smell in my mouth. The pain was insanely bad (fun times with three kids to look after) and had to get it packed twice. I was so lucky as we were in strict lockdown but begged a local dentist to see me.
As others said you’d really know if you have it but the horrible taste and smell was really the other main sign for me.

So it's now day 4 post extraction. Clot is still a weird grey colour but getting smaller. Have noticed the gum below the extraction site and gums below adjacent teeth are really inflamed and red. Causing a fair bit of discomfort which wasn't there before (i don't think). Does this sound like infection or normal healing? The whole area hurts if I push on it and still a bit of swelling around jawline. Can't see dentist until Mon Sad

I've had loads of teeth out and the clot does normally go a greyish colour, have you been told to do warm salty rinses because I normally have to do that from the second day, very gently of course but I think that is to stop infection. The pain you have now could be from the extraction causing a bit of trauma when it was pulled out.

ilikebooksandplants · 09/01/2021 21:38

I had dry socket earlier this year and then it became infected. I have a ridiculously high pain threshold but this was the worst pain I’ve ever felt. It smelt absolutely horrible as well. I couldn’t sleep or work or do anything other than lie on my bed holding my face. It was all very dramatic. I felt like I was losing my mind for a good two weeks. I could barely hold any short term memories, it’s just a blur of pain.

You would definitely know if you had it!

User5437 · 09/01/2021 21:39

Don't swish with any rinse, I just get a mouthful of salt water and mouthwash mix and hold it there so nothing is disturbed, I also don't eat anything lumpy, bitty or hard for at least a week.

MaggieFS · 09/01/2021 21:58

Well this has been an education! I clicked expecting a thread about some sort of property electrical issue.

alphabetsoup1980 · 09/01/2021 22:04

the pain of dry socket will never leave you - I'm traumatised still!!!!! 😂 xxx

TeddyBearsPickAndMix · 09/01/2021 22:07

@User5437 yep I've been doing salty mouthwashes throughout the day. Still afraid to eat though! Just drinking yogurt drinks/shakes etc. Can you remember if your gums got really sore and inflamed around the extraction site?
@ilikebooksandplants ah that sounds awfulSad how did you get it treated in the end? I don't think it's a dry socket as can still see the clot, worried more about infection

@TeddyBearsPickAndMix
Because I am older, when I have had an extraction the teeth have been looser so more easily extracted so not much pain or swelling, I did have one though that broke and the dentist had to dig it out and that was inflamed and sore for about a week. Monday isn't far away so I would just see how it goes but it's probably just trauma

dden22 · 12/03/2023 06:51

hi there! sorry for posting the pic but i just need a little help. I had a tooth pulled on Friday and it's now my 2nd day. I'm worrying if it's a sign of a dry socket because It's black/gray in color and there's also something like white/yellow. is there anyone here who can help for what happened to me? I'm really😭 worried because I can't go to the dentist today because it's closed today.
