Would you self isolate under these circumstances?

(Name change as this is outing)

DH recently got a notification from the covid app telling him to self isolate. We couldn’t work out how or why because other than very briefly popping into the local shop once or twice (literally 5 minutes at a time and never within 2m of anyone), he hasn’t seen anyone outside of our bubble (child under 1) since 23rd December and none of us have been unwell.

It transpires that our next door neighbour has had covid and is now recovering. We haven’t had direct contact with him but the Bluetooth signal must have been picked up by the app through the wall in our tiny terraced cottages (easily doable if both phones on charge in the kitchen or bedroom for example).

I have had the app switched off as turned it off whilst working in a hospital and forgot to turn it on again after going on maternity leave. Obviously we both need to isolate if he needs to isolate as we are the same level of risk. But we’ve not actually had any contact, just been nearby through a wall!

So what would you do?
YABU - He’s been told to isolate by the app so must complete the isolation period.
YANBU - He can stop isolating prematurely because you know where the source of infection is and haven’t actually been in contact.

How many days did it tell him? As in what date was it suggesting he had contact?

dementedpixie · 06/01/2021 15:49

It should tell you in the app when contact was. How many days does it say?

vanillandhoney · 06/01/2021 15:49

No.

AFAIK you don't need to isolate if the app tells you to, only if you get a phone call from track and trace.

dementedpixie · 06/01/2021 15:50

And if he was in shops and out and about without you then its just him that would isolate not you.

sirfredfredgeorge · 06/01/2021 15:52

If you bothered to install the app, you should listen to what it says, it is completely pointless to install it and then ignore its actions. Whilst it is indeed likely that this is through a wall via the rubbishness that is Bluetooth.

But because you cannot know that it's due to that, then you should act as if it's real.

Obviously as noted it's not mandatory to respect it, but there really is no point using it and second guessing it, you would be better off not using it.

wasthataburp · 06/01/2021 15:54

No. You haven't had contact with the person who had Covid. Pointless

SleepingStandingUp · 06/01/2021 15:55

But of the app saints you had contact on 28th and you know you haven't seen anyone since the 10th then it's obv it isn't correct. Which is why people have asked the dates.

BlairCorneliaWaldorf · 06/01/2021 15:57

Could be someone who works in the shop?

You don’t both need to isolate. Given the very limited reasons for which you can leave home, is isolating really a massive deal? Different matter if he has to actually leave the house for work, I agree.

Northernsoullover · 06/01/2021 15:58

I had one of these mystery alerts where I couldn't have possibly had contact long enough to trigger it. I did isolate but I have turned it off as I can't be isolating just for buying a pint of milk (in and out no queueing). Its a real shame , had it the alert been triggered on a day I had a coffee out (before lockdown) I would have taken it on the chin.

Yes, he got the app notification on the 3rd. I believe neighbour had a covid test on the 1st.

What date does it say contact was in the app?
It could be nothing to do with your neighbour
What's the point having the app if you aren't going to follow its instructions?

Affor · 06/01/2021 16:34

Whilst it is indeed likely that this is through a wall via the rubbishness that is Bluetooth.

The app makers have stated that this isn't a thing. It's very unlikely to be because of a phone from next door.
