For people to park in bays instead of on their own drive?

Not really AIBU but more do you all think its unreasonable. People with a driveway who park in built-in additional parking spaces instead of on their own drive. There's someone who does this on my street, only one car but they use up one of these additional parking spaces. My partner has a company car and would be good to be able to park there instead of on the road, but not really anything that bothers us, you could argue that we should've bought a house to accommodate two cars on a driveway. A friend of mine had a full on hissy fit at her neighbour about this same issue because the road was congested with parked cars. So do you think its unreasonable to use up a space instead of your own drive or do you think its fine for people to do this? Based on someone with one car. Interested to hear views!

I think it’s fine to do.

contrmary · 06/01/2021 09:01

Is this a wind up? You're complaining that people parking where they are allowed to prevents your partner parking there? Just sell your car or get your partner to ditch the company car (will save a lot in tax), problem solved.

ZoeTurtle · 06/01/2021 09:02

If there's a shortage of spaces on the road then it's really selfish.

Lockheart · 06/01/2021 09:02

People can park where they like as long as it's legal, and parking on a public road is legal (subject to restrictions / road markings of course).

That said, if parking is known to be tight I'd certainly consider it more community minded if people used their drives to allow those who don't have drives to park.

But they're under no obligation to do so.

Crankley · 06/01/2021 09:02

Providing they are not illegally parked, they can park wherever they wish.

JoannaDory · 06/01/2021 09:02

I think it depends how easy it is to get in and out of their own drives. If the swing in and out is tight then I can see that using a parking bay may be easier.

TBH I think most people are inherently lazy and would therefore use their own drives unless there is a reason not to.

@JoannaDory I agree with you, it would drive me mad if I couldn't easily get out of my own driveway for fear of hitting another car. Could you also argue you shouldn't buy a house with parking bays at the end of your drive if this worries/annoys you though? Its an interesting one!!

Obviously they can park there but I think it's really selfish unless there is a good reason.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean that you should.

ScrumptiousBears · 06/01/2021 09:08

This happens in my street. We are permit parking and all have drives that can accommodate up to 3 cars nose to tail but some of these drives are at the end of the block of 5 houses therefore they all park in the lay-bys outside their houses. This means there's no space for visitors and loads of empty drives. Yes they are allowed but it's not really acceptable. To add insult one of the neighbours also puts notes on any car that parks "in his space outside of his house".

Yes. This

In our little estate we all have drives for at least 2 cars, yet half my neighbours park 1 car on the road and the other on their drive

The road is very narrow so it’s a right pain in the arse - you can squeeze past the parked cars if you drive across the opposite house’s front garden.

We are the first house into the estate (and park both cars on the drive) so it doesn’t directly affect me, but one day a fire engine or something won’t be able to get through.

They do it so they don’t have to swap cars around on their drives

MadameBlobby · 06/01/2021 09:26

My street does my head in. Most houses seem to have 3 cars and dump them all over the road. Added to which our road has no pavements so it’s really narrow, does my head in. There’s a car parks along the road on the road leaving their massive drive empty so that delivery vehicles and bin lorries can’t get past. I’m looking forward to the day a fire engine or similar has to come into the street and rips the sides off the fuckers!

Yeah it’s the same here. Across the road always has something parked on the road impeding us getting out our drive. So annoying.

If she's parking there but her insurance says using her drive, it will be invalidated and I'd be inclined to remind them of this fact.
StarryStrawberry · 06/01/2021 13:00

My next door neighbour gets up at 7am every morning, to move his car from his driveway into the space on the road outside his house.
So no one else can park there and block 'his view' Grin

I agree with this.

Extremely selfish and what I would call a move that marks you out as a twat.

littlepattilou · 06/01/2021 13:20

YANBU. Absolutely not. @MaMaD1990

But you won't get much support on here. Even if people have a 4 car drive, many posters on here will say it's ok for them to park on the road, (preferably opposite your drive just for good measure.) Because they can, and because the law says it's allowed.

I agree with @SoupDragon that just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you SHOULD.

I also agree with @billy1966

It's extremely selfish and what I would call a move that marks you out as a twat.

Anyone who parks on the road when they've got a driveway to park on is an inconsiderate oaf. Just try doing the same to them though. Park YOUR car outside your driveway and on the main road, and you get evil looks.

IME, these are the same individuals who play music loud in their house, who have loud get-togethers in their garden from 3pm til midnight every weekend between May and October, who leave their wheelie bin on the footpath for 3 or 4 days after it's been emptied, and who let their dog shit on public footpaths. The 'I will do what the fuck I want' brigade. We all know people like this, and they're the worst kind of people.

Sparklingbrook · 06/01/2021 13:25

It is selfish. Makes me wonder whether they have an oil leak or something.

We had a lot of snow last week, no way would I have parked on the road if I didn't have to-cars are safer on the drive.

MaMaD1990 · 06/01/2021 13:29

@StarryStrawberry they sound a treat!

well sometimes it's more practical to leave your drive empty for visitors or for any other reasons, so why not.

No one owns the road next to their home, goes both ways. Why should drives owner not park there? It's all well and good to be respectful towards your neighbours, but there are limits and no one respects a push over.

OK then, let's ALL park on the road then. Fuck what problems, or difficulties, or obstructions it causes. Every person should just park on the road from now on. BECAUSE NOBODY OWNS THE ROAD! Hmm

Park on your DRIVEWAY if you have one. FFS!

It doesn't make you a 'pushover' to be a decent considerate person.

Seriously. Some fucking people. Angry

This ^

And @StarryStrawberry
Your 7am neighbour is bonkers. Just why!

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 06/01/2021 14:04

it makes no difference to you if it's my guest or my car who is parked in the bay...

If you are that irate about your own parking space, buy one!

Drive or no drive, everybody has the same right and access to street parking. The only requirement is to not block people's drive!

Inebriatededna · 06/01/2021 14:04

We have a shared drive and the batty neighbours complained to the council that we parked in it and apparently the law on shared driveways says nobody has the right to park on a shared driveway . So now we all struggle to park on our tiny street while a drive with room for 3 cars sits empty 🙄 I'm sure other neighbours curse us daily .

PopThatBootyForStNick · 06/01/2021 14:16

I live at the only house in the lane that doesn't have a massive drive (4 cars). In front of my house there is an allocated space for use to use where we can fit two cars. The amount of times I would return home after work and someone's visitor will be park in the space outside my house instead of on their drive. Bloody ridiculous
