Lighthearted, but not really

NDN has been having work done in the house for months. They said it’d be a week but alas 6 months later, there are workmen coming and going from as early as 7am to 11pm. Then had a card through the door a few days ago saying building work was happening next door but one for a few months.

I understand people need work doing but AIBU to think this is so selfish during the pandemic when people cannot get out for the day. Especially Now it’s lockdown and I cannot escape this apart from walking by dog, which I cant do all day!

Sorry, I mainly needed to vent because I’m sleep deprived and I can’t even escape noise!Sad

I'd be kind of laughing at the neighbours a bit. What kind of workmen need to work all that time, and have still not managed to finish after several months of work? Are they rebuilding the entire house from the foundations up? Confused

Their bill will be extremely high I'd imagine for that many hours, workmen, supplies etc. I'd be going mental at them for not being finished already.

Being in close proximity to inconsiderate neighbors has been the worst part of lockdown for us...in the darkest times I wished a bad case of Covid on them just so we could have some peace in our own home. I feel your pain OP.

Really? So they pay extra because they can't make their minds up? Some people have more money than sense.

According to another neighbour the builder is a friend and was telling them he isn't making any money out of it now, bet they aren't paying him extra if that's what he said

There’s a block of flats being built near us. Eighteen months of daily noise- the piledrivers drove me almost demented at the start- now it’s the constant beeping of things reversing.

All to have my view blocked and the balconies of 8 flats overlooking my bedroom window...

I feel (and hear) your pain!!

Where do people find these builders that will put in long days?

The guys who replaced my windows and doors recently never got here before 9 and left around 3, except for one day when one guy was working on his own and stuff took longer. He stayed till 4pm! (In fairness, my house is an hour's drive away from their base.)

My builder BIL would never dream of letting his guys start before 8 and they almost invariably finish by 5. The only exception is if something goes horribly wrong in such a way that it can't be left overnight.

Legally, "noisy" working must be undertaken between 7am and 11pm unless specifically told otherwise (which would only be outside a hospital, or somewhere very noise sensitive - standard residential streets are not noise sensitive).

(I used to issue environmental health works permits for a living)
