Hi
My daughter is in year 2 ( 7 )
She has been off school now due to covid for a year.
She has really struggled with her reading and writing before covid hit. She also has speech delay.
Her maths I think is going well, she might still be slightly behind but she engages well with it and is progressing heaps.
We are still struggling with her reading and writing and getting very little support from school.
She hates writing which doesn’t help but my issue is because she won’t write / says her hands hurt etc she is also missing out on learning other things like sentence structure / spelling / things like that. I asked the school if we could use laptop for the written work for example write a letter to another student but they have said no has to be hand written. This causes hell she takes about 1 hour to write ( scripted ) sentences.
Her reading is behind she can not read any book by her self but has started being able to blend and read some words but basic phonics blended.
I feel like this hasn’t improved at all in the year and I’m starting to feel like I am failing her.
She loves me reading to her and is great at the comprehension side.
She is good at learning about something and remembering it and wandering questions allowed
But the reading and writing has become a real struggle.
Has anyone for any tips or advice as I’m at the end of my rope with it.
Has anyone else had a 7 year old who couldn’t really read or write and caught up ?
She also hasn’t had any speech input for a year etc.

My daughter did not learn to read at all until 11 and she got 4 grade A A-levels

How well a child reads at 7 does not make much difference to them in the long run

If she is struggling to write as it hurts it means her hands are not ready - switch to colouring, mazes etc.

Just keep reading to her - lots of picture books - it would be great if she sees the rest of the family reading for pleasure as well - read out small snippets of things you read that you like.

Do not kill the joy of reading by making it a chore she hates. Keep it all fun and no pressure and she really will be fine in the long run.

Teach your monster to read.
My son is 6, he started the TYMTR programme in reception, he now reads Enid Blyton, despite being officially recognised as dyslexic. X

Reading
dancing bears 10 minutes very day and I found it easier than some of the other programs recommneded here.

reading practise:

teach your monster how to read

reading chest for pratcise books.

spelling
Apple and pears - same peopel as dancing bears - really good but there is writing involved.

Also liked sign post for spelling but it's an older program.

Handwriting
write form the start

older children - though may have useful activites
Speed up

handwriting slopes and activties than build hand muscule control also worth looking at.

Nessy - might help with writing development but avoid handwriting.

If later you have any concerns about maths - really rate mathsfactor

Mine all caught up -and doing well in secondary school.

Primary board onhere was a great resource for us so many great teachers and other parents giving helpful advice. Though best advice is little and often and don't try and sort everything at once it will take time.

My son was like this at this age, his reading did really improve after a while. It's so hard isn't it, we found reading unlocked really good, it's a fun little programme to do together, just 15 mins a day would be brill. Good luck xx

@MaudHatter

I used a scheme called Toe by Toe with my eldest . It worked and within a couple of years she was reading above her chronological age .
I second this.
