Hi... were due first baby in march and have most things sorted but i got a car seat with a pram set and it's really awkward to install into my car and seems a bit flimsy.. it's a roma 2 if that means anything to anyone and i have to pull the seat belt around it to keep it in in bit its seems insecure and wobbly! .... the question is.... do i buy isofix base and will any base fit? Or is the car seat crap do I get a new one? Any advice appreciated...

On our car you have to pull the seat belt all the way out before strapping the seat in. Once you do that the belt will only pull tighter, makes it's much easier to get the carseat feeling more secure by pulling the belt back in. I had to practice a bit before I really felt I could get it in safely.

The bases are specific to each manufacturer so you'd need to find the right one for your seat. I've not seen ones you can just clip any seat into.

Go to Halfords and ask them. The staff are very good and they are reasonably priced.

What's the brand? An isofix base will still move around but has two fixed points rather than the seatbelt so there is pretty much no chance of it not being fitted correctly.

There is loads of information out there regarding the safety of seats. I personally bought one that did DS from 0-4 years, rear facing, isofix which rated well on the ADAC website (German standards). If you're concerned read into its safety. Ensure you have it fitted correctly and if you're still not sure then buy one you are happy with.

If you want isofix you need the specific base for the car seat. I do recommend to be honest if your seat clips to the pram - otherwise you end up with your back getting soaking wet while leaning in to mess with the seatbelt.

I would say, try to stick with familiar brands for car seats (maxi cosi, cybex, britax, joie, axkid). Infant seats are safer (the carry bar is essentially a bumper bar so is an added layer of protection). There’s a fantastic Facebook page Car Seat Advice UK who can give some great advice on all car seats.

I would definitely get an isofix base. You'll have to look at the manufacturer which one they say is compatible. Ours is shaped to the seat, you wouldn't be able to put a different seat in it.

It will make getting in and out so much easier and means it's always fitted correctly and they're so easy to fit.

Is it Britax Roma? If so look in the instructions booklet and it'll show you which Isofix base will work for that particular caraway. I definitely recommend a base as it's quicker to clip the seat in and out

Think about what you’ll want to use once your baby has grown out of the pram seat too.

You run then the risk of buying a base to use with the pram seat, but only using t for 6 months and then having to replace it with a proper car seat.

As PP said, we bought one car seat that does from 0-4 years.

There’s also a danger in leaving your baby in a pram seat for hours if you’re switching them between the pram and the car, which is not recommended as they can’t breate properly.
