To feel this was pedantic

I am so frustrated. I need to deposit cash into my account to avoid going into my overdraft. I believed the TSB shut at 3.30 but yesterday, as I arrived, I found out the branch had reduced their closing hours to 3pm so I was too late.

Today, following work, the earliest I could get there was 2.50pm.

I arrived at the same time as another lady. There was, I think, one customer in the bank, the other lady at the entrance and then me outside. At about a minute of queuing, a worker came and said that she was closing for the day at the customer before me.

I said I really need to get some money into my account today so could I use the deposit machine. She said it was broken so no. I asked for the next closest TSB near as I really need to get some cash into my account today. (I was clutching at straws admittedly). She said, no we close early now, we are all closed. When I returned to my car and drove away, it was still only 2.55pm. They are closed on Wednesdays.

So, although I have a handbag full of cash I can imagine the direct debits pinging away into my overdraft.

Go to a Post Office and deposit it there.

Justcallmebebes · 05/01/2021 16:43

Second that. Post office have a banking service for most of the high St banks

FutureDuchessofHastings · 05/01/2021 16:46

Yes that was out of order. If they shut at 14:50 they should say they shut at 14:50, not 15:00. Banks are shits.

HUCKMUCK · 05/01/2021 16:49

Second the post office. Also if there’s one near you in a convenience store, they are often open late. I paid cash in at about 9pm once! Really convenient.

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 05/01/2021 16:51

I don’t think the post office accepts tsb deposits. My local one didn’t when I was with tsb. Part of the reason I switched banks.

Vitaminsss · 05/01/2021 16:52

It’s worth opening a complaint with your bank if this will place you in financial hardship eg overdraft fees, rejected direct debits etc.

Swingometer · 05/01/2021 16:56

YANBU that does sound really harsh considering it would likely take under 5 minutes for you to deposit the cash. They should advertise that they are open til 3pm if they're going to close 10 minutes early

Getting to a bank during its opening hours is near to impossible when you work

Plump82 · 05/01/2021 17:00

Id complain. There's likely to be CCTV to back you up if necessary. If that's how they want to operate then they need easy to see signs stating that the last time for serving customers is 1450

Yes, it does: www.postoffice.co.uk/everydaybanking
Priceless21 · 05/01/2021 17:14

Thanks for your replies. The TSB has an 'X' next to cash deposits with the Post Office so I don't think I can use them.

TSB overdraft fees have previously been astronomical although I think recently have revised how they calculate them over the last few months. I might drop an Email asking them to waive any fees incurred.

And Swing, I agree, I had said I needed to deposit cash, so cash with a bankcard takes about a minute.

After 32 years of my loyalty, time for a change.

Look again at the TSB listing. It says you can make a manual cash deposit at the Post Office.

Priceless21 · 05/01/2021 17:25

Sorry, yes, Master I was scrolling down the Automated list - I'll have a go tomorrow. It will make life a lot easier if I can.

Thank you.

TSB are absolutely fucking useless. I have had more than one occasion to lodge a complaint due to their shoddy service and lax security. They actually sent a debit card to my XH two years after his name had been removed from the account. Then they sent me a cheque book with his name on it which I was unable to use seven years after his name was removed from the account. That’s just a small selection of things I’ve complained about.

The good news is that the complaints department are very good and will sort out whatever issues you’re having very quickly. Tell them what’s happened and that you want any overdraft fees refunded to your account.

Fairyliz · 05/01/2021 17:31

I had exactly the same problem with the Nationwide, arrived five minutes before closing time and the doors were locked.

To made matters worse I received an email a few days later to say how they had reduced opening hours to help their customers.

Still can't get my head around that one.

Priceless21 · 05/01/2021 17:40

Whatis Oh dear, that's not good at all.. has made me remember that they put the male version of my name on my account for about 15 years, despite me informing them of the error. It was always flagged up when trying to deposit cheques over the counter and whether they should accept them so I had to deposit them via the machine as I never had a problem with deposits that way. They finally sorted it about five years ago.

When putting cash or a cheque in at the post office do I need anything else.
I’m with TSB and need to get a cheque in the bank but as above it’s not open for long enough

Cherry83 · 05/01/2021 17:56

YADNBU I would suggest putting in an official complaint explaining the circumstances exactly as you have to us. My bank automatically awards £150 to customers whose complaints are upheld...just saying...and the staff member involved might have a bit of much needed customer relations training!

Nunoftheother · 05/01/2021 17:57

It's not your fault that the deposit machine was broken. I think that's pretty shoddy service and by the sound of it there wasn't even the justification of there being too many people in the bank to maintain social distancing.

GabsAlot · 05/01/2021 18:15

complain then tel them youre switching banks-thats not on

Banks have never been great but since covid they have gone into a whole other league of how shit they are!

Hope you get it sorted @Priceless21

Priceless21 · 05/01/2021 18:30

Well, for me, today, the TSB, was not "the bank that likes to say yes". I will be moving banks and will contact them first to let them know why. I will also try to deposit via the Post Office tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice and messages.

Got another account to do a bacs? Or a mate you can give the cash to who can do a bacs?

hobbyiscodefordogging · 05/01/2021 18:54

Don't just ask them to waive fees! Put in a proper complaint to them. That's not on.
