Daughter’s surgery

timetest · 05/01/2021 15:10

My DD’s surgery has just been cancelled due to the influx of Covid cases over the last few days . AIBU to say thank you so, so much to all the people who have been so reckless over Christmas, have mixed households and spread the virus. My girls surgery wasn’t life saving but would have massively improved her quality of life. She is devastated as am I.

That’s extraordinarily frustrating. I’m so sorry.

WorraLiberty · 05/01/2021 15:13

Surely you'd have to find them first?

timetest · 05/01/2021 15:15

Not in the mood to be amused by you worraliberty.

WorraLiberty · 05/01/2021 15:19

I'm not trying to be amusing but you are being rather silly.

Covid was rising rapidly before Christmas and the 'results' from the actual Christmas period are only literally just coming to light.

I'm sorry your DD's surgery has been cancelled but lashing out at people who have mixed households isn't going to help because you have no idea how (or if) that's the reason why.

Crunchymum · 05/01/2021 15:23

Where are you based?

The cases could be down to new variant.

I really do understand. DC3 has a rare genetic condition and hasn't seen anyone involved in her care (specialist consultant / community paediatrician / SLT / Physio etc) in person since Dec 2019. Thankfully her condition is well managed and video calls have sufficed but we are due an annual overnight hospital stay to review her medication and I doubt that will go ahead.

I know some people flout the rules, I know some people do it to a jaw dropping degree [looking at you neighbours who fucked off to Cornwall the day we went into Tier 4] but I really cannot blame others for the way my DC3 care is being handled. Yes on a simplistic level we can blame those flouting the rules but it is so much more complicated than that. The NHS is not being overwhelmed by the rule breakers per se.

There is so much anger and division and bad feeling at the moment, threads like this just create more animosity.

timetest · 05/01/2021 15:25

Worra, I disagree. The spike in figures over the weekend would suggest mixing of households have had a huge impact on COVID figures.
Please don’t call me silly. I am dealing with an adult daughter who has not been able to walk or eat sold food for months and this surgery would have helped greatly. This was cancelled with less than one days notice.

I’m very sorry to hear that, my daughter is due to have surgery on Thursday and I have absolutely everything crossed it goes ahead. She needs a HDU bed for 48 hours after and they obviously can’t guarantee one till we turn up on the day.
I’m hoping it will happen as it’s being done at a children’s hospital and so far they are not taking Covid patients, but obviously that could change.

WorraLiberty · 05/01/2021 15:31

Precisely. It's tough for everyone and tougher for others like the OP for example but the truth is, no-one knows whether things like this are down to rule breakers or the new strain.

NannyGythaOgg · 05/01/2021 15:32

The virus is doing what a virus does. It has little if anything to do with people breaking rules.

I am sorry that her surgery has been cancelled but at least she isn't going into the place that has the greatest risk of catching Covid.
(Close contact, overheated and little air change)

timetest · 05/01/2021 15:34

The hospital have said they will reschedule for a fortnights time when they will have hopefully dealt with the Christmas numbers. That would suggest that rule breakers have contributed to this situation.

I can understand how you feel OP.It happened to me in March just as lockdown started.I was due ito go to hospital 2 days after.I honestly wanted to cry.
I had already waited 18 months.
Luckily I had my op in August.
I hope she doesn't have to wait too long.

timetest · 05/01/2021 15:45

It’s just horrible. We had a 4 hour round trip for her Covid test on Sunday and were convinced after so many false starts that she was going to finally get her surgery. It is quite rare that she goes a fortnight without an overnight stay in A and E so she will be taking up a bed or a trolley in a corridor anyway.
My sympathy to all in a similar situation. I know we are not alone in this.

purplecorkheart · 05/01/2021 15:52

I so sorry to that. I agree wholeheartedly with you. Lots of people seemed to have the attitude that it was Christmas and somehow the rules did not apply to them (I am working in Health Care and are seeing it with the clients I deal with.) So many people I deal with broke the rules because it was Christmas and they always visit x at Christmas.

You’re welcome xxx

PurpleDandelions · 05/01/2021 16:03

I'm sorry that some posters are being shitty to you trying to score points when you are clearly having an awful time.
I've been through similar anxious wait for surgery and I know how horrifically cruel the process can be.
Best of luck.

StopGo · 05/01/2021 16:05

@timetest I empathise with you and your DD. DS's urgent surgery was indefinitely postponed in early December the day before he was due to have it. He's been left in pain and struggling to breath.

BrumBoo · 05/01/2021 16:07

Sorry op, it sounds utterly awful for your daughter. However, I agree about the 'rule breakers' anger being somewhat misplaced. The new strain was already well in circulation before Christmas and the government did sod all. Most people were still allowed to mix, even just for the day. Many went to supermarkets and shops that weren't closed down until the very last moment, perfect breeding ground for the now more contagious virus. Dont even get me started on schools, it was very clear up to two weeks before the holidays that something was going wrong, it was spreading like wildfire.

I really hope she gets her operation ASAP.

Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily · 05/01/2021 16:15

It is so infuriating OP. My child's surgery was cancelled in Oct the day before due to rising covid patients in the ICU. It was so stressful and led to a massive cock up with admin and him being forgotten entirely. Luckily we managed to get him in for the surgery in December at the last minute, hopefully you won't have too long to wait or get exposed before you have chance to get it done.

Jjjayfee · 05/01/2021 16:17

Oh Timetest how very distressing for you and your daughter. I hope she gets the surgery soon and that things get better all round for you

Ffs. Why font you thank the government who didn't act quickly enough the first time?
I've been waiting 2 years for surgery I'm unlikely to get even this year. I'm not bitching about individuals ejrm we have an incompetent government. Get a grip.

The posts on here are just fucking vile right now.
