You shouldn't need a printer for homeschooling

DC Y3. 30 plus pages of print outs sent out today via Google Classrooms. Nothing is interactive/ editable online. We don't have a printer and get through life the rest of the time perfectly well. IABU to expect school to try a bit harder to set more work that doesn't have to printed out/ transposed by parents to paper in order to complete?

I bought an HP envy all in one printer for £50 and got 2 months free instant ink with it, you can print as much as you like and they automatically send the ink to you when the printer tells them to. It’s brilliant, I got ours from Curry’s, and the free instant ink trials go from 2 months to 13 months depending where you get it from, the one I bought before had a 13 month free instant ink trial, brilliant if you need to do a lot of printing.

YANBU but I do need a printer as I have DC with learning disabilities that affect how well they can read/use material on a screen.

ASimpleLampoon · 05/01/2021 15:59

We are on Class Dojo. DC types directly into the journal or we do the work on paper, take a photo and upload.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 05/01/2021 16:00

Please just tell the school and they should print it. We have staff who are in school on a rota literally printing whatever the students need so they can come and collect it.

PhatPhanny · 05/01/2021 16:03

Are you sure they are not able to be edited?
You need to open them in thr app it says along the top.

Scarlett1251 · 05/01/2021 16:05

I think this is something that highlights the inequalities in households. The school send countless worksheets and games for us to print off. I'm lucky enough to have a printer as I work from home, but it still costs a lot in inks. None of it comes for free.

switswoo81 · 05/01/2021 16:06

(Whispers) this is why I love that we use textbooks... Have been slated on here for them but at times like this they are invaluable. (Not in UK)

formerbabe · 05/01/2021 16:06

Yanbu...we got through tons of printer ink last lockdown. That's expensive shit

Tongtwister · 05/01/2021 16:12

I've bought one this morning I realise I'm very lucky to be able to do that. We didn't need one last time all the work was easy to do ourselves but this needs all the worksheets.

pinbinpin · 05/01/2021 16:25

This again. Just order a 30 quid one off Amazon or make do. Is it really worth a whinge?

I WFH so have a printer and will happily print things for people, ask on local facebook or make the busy and stressed teachers do it ...

YoniAndGuy · 05/01/2021 16:26

AGREE!!!

Everyone buying printers and ink for these times is the exact opposite of what we should be aiming for environment-wise - and it's perfectly possible to set everything up so it's not needed.

Easy as that ey?

I don’t have £30 to spend on a printer so what’s your answer there?

pinbinpin · 05/01/2021 16:27

Ask people on your local FB

Ask the school

Ask other parents

pinbinpin · 05/01/2021 16:28

Take a picture on whatever device you're posting this on

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 05/01/2021 16:28

I am curious where do people expect the budget to come from, for schools to print and deliver resources to everybody?

Soubriquet · 05/01/2021 16:29

I’ve already asked the school, and awaiting reply for that

I don’t really have anyone I can ask, plus I can’t expect them to print out reams of work at their cost!

TigerDrawers · 05/01/2021 16:29

I know someone that hasn't been able to buy ink for their printer for months as a result of the pandemic. That stuff does not last long!

Re not having a Microsoft licence, download Open Office for free - it opens Microsoft documents and you can save them in microsoft formats too.

YANBU though OP.

(Also off to look at OneNote!)

pinbinpin · 05/01/2021 16:29

open in word and get them to fill it out on that (but surely kids need actual writing practice?)

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 05/01/2021 16:29

Parents should be made to buy worksheet and supplies for their kids at the beginning of each school year anyway. It works in other countries.

Expecting to get everything for free is depleting schools of much needed resources that would be beneficial for EVERY child.

formerbabe · 05/01/2021 16:30

The printers aren't too expensive generally...It's the ink that is the expensive part. Apparently it's more expensive per mil than champagne!

Kokosrieksts · 05/01/2021 16:30

I voted YABU because where do you expect these teachers get interactive materials on such short notice? I really feel for them having to juggle all this, receiving all this homework back in different formats and having to check it.
Of course it’s not easy for parents either, but if you can afford the 60£ printer, just bite the bullet and get it.

formerbabe · 05/01/2021 16:30

I said expensive a lot in that post

maddy68 · 05/01/2021 16:32

Teachers were only told about online learning last night as you know. They haven't had time to prepare resources they will have fallen on banks of resources that exist already these will be pdf format so they can be bulk uploaded. It's not ideal but be understanding

Just write the answers on a word doc and upload. No need to print

Phineyj · 05/01/2021 16:40

Gosh, be careful what you wish for. Everything at DD's school is "interactive". The WhatsApp is full of stressed out parents who can't get in/download/edit/upload. Sometimes printing (or indeed, using a book) is a relief.

Mind you all my own students have textbooks but not all took them home in December, despite me telling them this was likely to happen. So I'm having to scan the pages.

The OneNote tip is great though!

sarahC40 · 05/01/2021 16:40

You should have access to Microsoft applications for free if you son or daughter has a school email address (secondary). Save to one note and you’ll have an editable doc. We use photos uploaded or emailed to work from and if all that doesn’t work, I would suggest you pick the exercises that can be done without dispiriting copying to complete.
