To consider changing schools?

Day one of home learning... 1- write a story, 2- do timetable rockstars, 3 - make someone smile. Other friends have much more structured learning. This is completely risible and would learn more from being permanently home schooled or changed schools!

You’ve answered your own question really. Homeschool or change school your choice

Brighterthansunflowers · 05/01/2021 12:06

Would help if you said how old your child is.

Also remember that this was announced at 8pm last night. Give the school a bloody chance. Yes it was predictable but until 8pm they were trying to plan for every possible eventuality, and the idiot running the country had confidently told everyone to send their kids to school just the day before yesterday

Norwayreally · 05/01/2021 12:07

It was announced at 8pm last night, schools didn’t have prior notice to this- they heard about it at the same time as us. Give them chance. My DC’s school has said just do what you can today- reading, spellings, TT rockstars and they’ll send a structured timetable tomorrow. They’re all using today to set it up so even keyworker children can’t go in today.

Fressia123 · 05/01/2021 12:08

She's 10, year 5. Last year was EXACTLY the same the whole time.

Last year I gave up (as literally it was go on walks, talks to a tree , etc...) Use BBC bitesize etc... I taught her algebra and basic coding. In fact I'm still so proud that I haven't erased her equations from the whiteboard :)

I'd say English is fine - writing a good story at Y5 level should take a while. TT rock stars for Y5 is a bit poor but if your daughter is able to do algebra why not replace it with something like a Bond 11+ workbook instead?

CrotchBurn · 05/01/2021 12:22

Make someone smile? WHAT?!

Fressia123 · 05/01/2021 12:31

I'll look into that workbook! Thanks @BlackberrySky

This sounds like what my DS has been assigned for reception tbh Grin. I'd not be happy but Im unsure if moving schools would be a great idea, especially if the quality of good when it's face to face.

JayDot500 · 05/01/2021 12:32

Quality is* good

Vickles20 · 05/01/2021 12:37

Ditto! We paid for White Rose Maths for the year.

Fressia123 · 05/01/2021 12:38

I think it's always been average. I've never been a fan but thought that it was secondary that really mattered. But there's a massive difference between average and terrible.

DfE Guidance.

Last year the government created a new legal expectation on schools to provide remote learning for pupils who are not in schools
The guidance for the latest national lockdown sets out the following expectations for remote learning.
Schools and teachers are expected to:
• Set assignments so that pupils have meaningful and ambitious work each day in a number of different subjects
• Primary schools should ensure pupils have 3 hours work a day, on average, across the cohort
• Secondary schools should ensure pupils have 4 hours work a day, with more for pupils working towards formal qualifications this year
• Provide frequent, clear explanations of new content, delivered by a teacher or through high-quality curriculum resources or videos
• Have systems for checking, at least weekly, whether pupils are engaging with their work, and inform parents immediately where engagement is a concern
• Gauge how well pupils are progressing through the curriculum using questions and other suitable tasks
• Provide feedback, at least weekly, using “digitally facilitated or whole-class feedback where appropriate”.
• Enable teachers to adjust the pace or difficulty of what is being taught in response to questions or assessments, including, where necessary, revising material or simplifying explanations to ensure pupils’ understanding.

I would say give them a chance this week, but then ask questions using the info above.

That's very helpful thank you so much!

My children's school is the same, a few worksheets and some links for us to find resources. I was so hopeful it would be better this time but looks like the school are suspending the curriculum again for those not in school.

ellenleaves · 05/01/2021 12:58

(There was nothing saying this was a stop gap while they sorted out better provision, I think this is it and they won't do any checking up on the children either again.)

Tinkywinkydinkydoo · 05/01/2021 13:04

I was expecting you to say she was 5! The trouble with changing schools during a lockdown would be that most likely she wouldn’t be able to change until the end of term unless she lives closer to a new school. Also if the new school did zoom lessons she wouldn’t know a single person abs might feel a bit left out? But I really don’t think that’s suitable work for a 10yr old and I have pretty low standards for home school learning Grin

LauristonPlace · 05/01/2021 13:56

Yes, you can change schools at the minute. Systems are the same. Child may take time to make friends but people move house, jobs , even during a pandemic.

LauristonPlace · 05/01/2021 13:58

ellen schools are expected to publish a plan for their remote learning. Needs to be on their website by 25th of Jan (I think). Curriculum hasn't been suspended like March, schools can't choose this time.

CakeRequired · 05/01/2021 14:01

I was expecting you to say she was 5!

Same. I was expecting a very young age, not almost going into bloody high school. Is that teacher serious?!

I get they didn't have a lot of notice, but that's pretty bad.

Bettina500 · 05/01/2021 14:05

My year 2 DC hasn't got much today but her teacher did email to say it had been put together last minute which I understand.
My year 4 DC has had several subjects set and a zoom meeting with her teacher.

I would give a bit of leeway for the short notice they were given, but moving forward I think that's unacceptable and yes I would consider changing schools unless it was otherwise excellent.

Fressia123 · 05/01/2021 14:12

Last time it was the same so I'm not very hopeful...

OP posts:
maddening · 05/01/2021 14:13

For the first day or 2 I would let it slide but they should be aiming to provide proper education.

We had this the same shite last lockdown and I had to completely facilitate his education while working full time. His maths did actually improve with me.

We did move school..

Winterwoollies · 05/01/2021 14:21

I was prepped for thinking you were BU but that is some seriously half-arsed home learning from her teacher. Jesus.

I think your best bet is to home school. Which is not, probably, the easiest way but she really won’t be able to ‘move’ in the current clime anyway.

Fressia123 · 05/01/2021 14:43

Her dad and I have come up with our own curriculum including English, algebra/maths, coding, social and natural sciences and music.
