PRIVATE SCHOOLS allowed to open reception year?! How is this fair? Why aren't all reception classes open then?

All schools closed... unless you are paying privately and in reception that is!

Just heard a close family member is sending their child in to reception in their public school which is allowed to open as reception is EYFS.

How is this fair?

Nurseries are allowed to open as EYFS but shouldn't all reception classes in all schools be closed in primaries to only the vulnerable and keyworker children?

Seems there is a handy little loophole for the well off parents of public schooled children. Either they all should be closed or all early years should be open, not just to the privileged elite.

In my private school the nursery and reception class operate alongside each other as a bubble and there are small numbers so it probably counts as one setting. In a lot of state schools they are separate operations.
On a side note, there is so much bitching and complaining now that x has it better than y because z. Its like everyone is letting their inner green eyed mobster free rein at every opportunity instead of appreciating that everyone is doing the best they can to get through this and it's simply inevitable that some people's circumstances will be more advantageous. If the nursery can open but didnt, who is that helping?

Hollybollybingbong · 05/01/2021 08:54

This is the guidance specific to Reception/Early Years, it doesn't differentiate between private and state but some schools will include the reception class with their nursery provision to keep EYFS in one place, others include the reception class as part of the larger school.

I should think state schools will have more vulnerable children to cater for so cant open Reception as they need the staff.

HappyChristmasTreeRex · 05/01/2021 09:02

Reception in state schools can be open, some are choosing not to.

Worriedlyworried · 05/01/2021 09:04

But surely it boils down to that when children and adults can stay at home, they should be doing so to limit the spread? Numbers, classrooms and facilities asides it should purely be about ensuring as many people as possible stay at home?

Closed to the most vulnerable & the children of key workers. Is that what you really meant to say???

Life isn't fair!!
If it makes you feel better, our school has shut their reception classes.
However, with every child being given a laptop and an iPad, with extensive online classes, as well as every subject being marked and discussed. Most children at private school will have an advantage once again. It's something that I really struggle with ethically, however, as a parent, I want the best for my child.
It does bother me though, that just because someone's financial situation is better than someone else's, they have the option of better (IMO) education.

Jesus, at least make your mind up what you want to bitch about.

Do you also get annoyed they ave a 'better' house/car/holiday etc? Or is your ire reserved for schooling?

Ours isn't🤷🏻‍♀️

Resentment is a cancer in this country.

A fair number of them won't have a "better" house/car/holiday because they spend their income on getting a decent education for their children instead.

Where I live the independent and state primaries are only open for key worker and vulnerable children. Reception classes are otherwise closed. As for PCs and iPads being given out. Not happening round here!

NellePorter · 05/01/2021 09:43

@contrmary I was just going to say that ... we are not "well off" - small house, old car, UK holidays - it's just that we thought private secondary education was the best option for eldest DC at the time so we made those choices. I would say some of her friends in state secondaries appear much more well off than those at the private school. I can see the ethical argument, though.

edwinbear · 05/01/2021 09:45

DC's private school is opening for Nursery and Reception years because they are allowed to. State schools are also legally permitted to, but from what I understand are choosing not to. The question is why are state schools not opening, not why (many) private schools are. I imagine it's something to do with the fee discounts many private schools are applying to those years that are closed and therefore damage limitation to their income streams.

Buddytheelf85 · 05/01/2021 09:54

All reception classes are permitted to open, but you get what you pay for.

barbarahansen · 05/01/2021 09:57

Schoolchildren, unlike adults, can follow rules. They are socially distanced, masked, and not permitted to hang out and socialize in close physical proximity in school. The rates of infection in schools, and among children in general, have been low as to be almost zero.

I don't know how people have not realised yet that private schools are doing a MUCH better job than state schools

And I say this as a parent of private school kids

It's a disgrace
