To ask you to suggest a new skill to lean in lockdown

Obviously the first time round there was a bit of a 'blitz spirit' going on, and I know some people used the time to develop a new skill or learn something. I didn't! I worked all the way through as did many others, but as the nights are long and lockdown is going to drag this time around I wondered if anyone had any suggestions of a fun skill or new talent to develop?
I run, badly but make myself go. I enjoy painting and printmaking, but have done quite a bit of this recently so am looking to branch out.
What have people learned recently or what can people do that they're proud of?
Instrument? New language? Yoga pose? Juggling? Chess? Please don't say chess!

@Sparklingbrook

Check out Lauren.jumps on Instagram. She picked up a jump rope in April for the first time and you should see her now. She's brilliant. I dream of being able to do it!
Oh wow!!

Goals right there

I'm spending my lockdown trying to home school French verb tenses and algebra whilst providing meals for everyone, IT support when things go wrong, getting screamed at by DP and DC and all the while whilst trying to do a full time professional job.

So excuse me if I don't get a Grade 2 in Oboe or learn Manadarin this time round.

First aid - especially baby and child first aid if you have primary aged DC or under, or are expecting. I know so many mums who haven't done this but its really cheap. My friend does it on zoom.

I am also going to try to practice more mindfulness because we all need some relaxation and focus at the moment I think.

What a lovely thread idea, detailed by some miseries as usual. Conflicting advice on if knitting or crocheting is easier - I think it’s controversial Grin I would love to start one or the other. Last lockdown I bought myself a sewing machine and it’s brilliant. I’ve gone from not knowing even how to thread it to making a full quilt. I’ve just ordered my first dress pattern so if I can do it, anyone can.

BethHarmon · 06/01/2021 19:09

I would bloody love to but lockdown for me means a lot less spare time not more as will be the case for many other people.

I’m quite fed up of the assumption that lockdown suddenly means everyone has more time on their hands.

BethHarmon · 06/01/2021 19:15

Sorry just realised I misread your title. I thought you were asking us to learn a new skill during lockdown!

I knit and crochet, @VanillaSpiceCandle - I think I find knitting easier - and I can’t do straight edges in crochet - I just do squares, hexagons etc, and put them together into blankets.

Crochet gives far quicker gratification, in my experience - it doesn’t take long to make a square, and they do stack up quickly, but I prefer knitting for garments.

Bella Coco does really good crochet tutorials on YouTube - easy to follow, and once you know the basics, the Attic24 blog has some lovely patterns (and if I can do them - anyone can!).

For both knitting and crochet, Ravelry is a great website - it has loads of free patterns (the generosity of the designers is amazing) and you can filter the results, on the advanced pattern search, by things like skill level, weight of yarn etc.

If anyone wants to make squares, can I put in a plug for Woolly Hugs - it is a charity knitting group that started on MN, and is still here as well as on FB and the web. It began as a project to make a blanket for a MNer whose little boy sadly passed away - a way to try to send some comfort - and since then we have made a lot of blankets for bereaved MNers and their families. We also make blankets for refugees, people undergoing cancer treatment, people in Africa, children in hospital, and little white blankets to wrap premature babies who are stillborn - it means there is something the hospital can wrap the baby in that is the right size, and is better than a sheet or towel. It won’t make a terrible situation any better, but might prevent it being made even worse.

We also have online craft sales, so if you don’t knit or crochet, you can still either donate other hand made items, or buy yourself something.

You don’t have to make a whole blanket - you can just make a square or two. For most of the blankets, we use acrylic yarn - the Stylecraft Special double knit - because it is sturdy and easy to wash.

Woolly Hugs

I hope no one minds me plugging WH here.

I'm doing a 30 day yoga thing. I've never done it before so I guess it's a new skill?

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2021 18:32

@SillyMoomin she's brought out her own beaded jump rope. I have one in my basket but haven't quite got the confidence to check out and buy it.

Freewheelingoryx · 10/01/2021 18:35

Ukelele? There's lots of videos on You tube.

TaraR2020 · 10/01/2021 19:28

I took up knitting in the first lockdown and chess in the last.

Surprised to find how much I loved both! Also surprised at how much knitting has helped manage mental health during this crappy pandemic.

Gardening is also brilliant but I can't be tempted outside in this miserable gloom atm.

I'd love to do printmaking but im in a houseshare without much space atm so some good inspiration here!
