Lighthearted (mostly!).

My sister had a DS three weeks after I had my DS, and gave him a very similar name. For the purpose of this thread, think my son being called Roberto, shortened to Rob or Robbie. My sister's DS is called Ron (full name) but occasionally would get called Ronnie. So Rob and Ron (I know, my poor mother gets so confused!).

Kids are 2.5 years old. Anyway, my sister's DS has taken to referring to himself as Robbie (when he's called Ron, bless him. The thing that me and DH find hilarious is that my sister & fam now also refer to him as Robbie, because 'that's what he understands". It's not his name though?! My parents who look after him every week have started doing it too 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️.

AIBU to think my sister is being a nob for a. picking a name that was very similar to my son's name in the first place, and now b. calling her son by my son's name?!

I honestly mostly find it funny, but wonder when they will erm, call him by his actual name...at some point they will correct him...right??!

So like...hers is Max and yours is Matthew, shortened to Matt or Mattie kind of thing..? Sorry, it's quite hard to imagine without knowing the names! Obviously know why you wouldn't want to!

Either way, since they're unlikely to see much of each other day to day, meh.

I'm sorry I feel like YABU. The child should be able to call himself whatever he wants. In the (not so long ago) days when everyone had 10 or more kids (I'm Irish), it was very common for kids to have the same names as their cousins. In my family alone, we have four Marys, three Patricks, four Kathleens, two Bridgids and about a dozen Michaels. At family gatherings, you can basically get everyone's name right by guessing it's one of those five names. My baby has the exact same first name as one of my cousin's babies. I don't get why some people get so precious about names.

@LoveMyKidsAndCats

That is weird. Mine demanded I called him ben10 and (fireman) Sam when he was little though. I did aswell lol he grew out of it. Maybe Robbie is in a show he watches
Ha ha, mine used to insist his name was Danny Dog.

I called our DS by the same name as my brother.
We referred to them as ''Big'' and Little..

But now ''Little'' is over 6 foot tall, to match ''Bigs'' he is referred to by his initials, and ''Bigs'' is still called ''Bigs.''

It would have been easier to have called him something different, for sure.

LochDooner69 · 05/01/2021 14:58

just call them Ronb 1 and Ronb 2. EAsy.

I agree..Names are for sharing.

Even today , when people thing they are being ''Original'' by calling a baby ''Bear'' , there are follow ons.

Quite a few ''Bears'' about.

Doubtless they will be teased at school in the lunch queue : ''Watch out, Joe, you have a Bear behind! &c.

Max and Mattie is a much better way of thinking of it!

Still laughing at the idea of a baby Ron...

Yes, she is! Keep laughing 😂

ThundercloudYouBastard · 05/01/2021 15:15

Just remembering an Irish family I knew growing up, where they had more than 10 children. I think it was 12 or 13 and 10 were girls. I think all but two girls were named Mary-. So Mary-Frances, Mary-Pat(ricia), Mary-Ann, Mary-Jo(anna) etc etc. So yes, this isn't that weird at all thinking about it. Max and Matthew both ending up Mattie (temporarily while Max gets his head around saying his name properly). Definitely think it's fine.

ThundercloudYouBastard · 05/01/2021 15:17

Why is the sister being a nob though...it's her 2.5 yo son who can't say his name properly yet. Not sure why she's a nob at all. Especially if the birth certificate names are fairly different; Max and Matthew sort of thing.

CorianderBlues · 05/01/2021 15:44

Is your son called roberto because of a family member, or some other tribute? Maybe your sister also wanted that name for her child but you "got there first"?

Tier10 · 05/01/2021 15:49

Your sister is a bit of a nob but at least she’s not another Rob.

blalalala · 05/01/2021 15:53

Your sister may be a knob, but too late now.

Coldandcross · 05/01/2021 17:00
