Takeaway delivery driver recorded me and my house

Hi all,

A little worried about this. I ordered a takeaway at about 7pm. It arrived at about 7.30pm. When the delivery driver showed up he was recording me. As soon as I opened the door he had his phone pretty much in my face, holding it up and pointing it directly at me whilst giving me my food. He was acting slightly weird and kept apologising which I also thought was really odd as he hadn't done anything wrong. The food was on time so there was no need for him to apologise for anything. I thought he was recording me but my first thought was maybe he was checking the order on his phone to make sure he had everything in the bag. But, he continued to hold his phone up even after he gave me my food. I closed the door and watched him through my living room window and he continued to turn around and record the house. I also have a Ring camera so I've rewatched the footage back numerous times to make sure I wasn't just being paranoid and he was 100% recording me and the house.

I rang the restaurant up and told them, the owner spoke to me and apologised and said he probably did it to prove he delivered the food as a couple of days ago someone scammed them and made out their food never got delivered. I went on to explain how he could've just asked to take a picture with the food in my doorway or at least told me that's why he was recording but he didn't and it was very creepy. I live alone and I've seen footage circulating around on social media recently where gangs record peoples homes to later go back and break in and I'm quite scared now. I don't know what more I can do though. I don't feel like this is a matter for the police as what could they do? I don't want to waste their time but I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight.

It could just be a genuine thing and he was proving he delivered the food but it's just really strange how even after he gave me the food he continued to stand on my drive and record the house for a good 20 seconds afterwards. The owner asked to see the footage, so I sent it to him and he replied saying "That's not very good at all" and that was it.

What would you all do if this happened to you?

Anyone delivering here has taken a photo of the delivery on the doorstep with the door open. They've never taken a photo of the person answering the door. I'd tell the takeaway manager that unless they change the way they do things, I wouldn't order from them again.

GypsyLee · 04/01/2021 22:40

Proof of delivery I'd guess.
I know other delivery drivers do this, I've had it done but they really wanted the open door and house number in shot.

Inthelab · 04/01/2021 22:41

Don’t those ring doorbells record too? So he was being filmed by you.

Jobsharenightmare · 04/01/2021 22:41

Can people not see the difference between recording a person who comes onto your property for security versus someone coming onto your property and filming you?

I wouldn't worry as presumably his boss will tell him you've called and he will be more transparent next time. I would however check my points of entry too just in case.

No, quite frankly I don’t as he was being filmed having been invited to the property to deliver something. He was being blatant and also apologising because he was getting proof of delivery. This happens to me for every delivery now (a photo) due to customers scamming.
Godimabitch · 04/01/2021 22:45

I think he's just been a bit eager with the concept of proof of delivery. Although a picture in the doorway doesn't always prove it was delivered to the right place. My Amazon parcel was delivered yesterday with a picture. No idea where that house is and they didn't even question me when I told them that.

OppsUpsSide · 04/01/2021 22:47

Eat

carlaCox · 04/01/2021 22:48

I understand this would feel weird but I think PPs are correct that he's probably had a bad experience and doesn't want it to happen again. In terms of "why didn't he say anything?", he's probably got a million orders to fulfill, is getting paid bugger all and is probably stressed and distracted by the shitty situation we're all in. I once had a stressed out delivery guy tearfully ask me to deliver the other parcels for my street as he was so behind (I said yes!). Being a delivery person right now must be bloody hard.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 04/01/2021 22:52

You order food and film him delivering it and that's okay.
He films you accepting the food and you call his work and probably get him fired --- and that's okay?!
If I were his boss I would put you on a "no delivery" list.

Butchyrestingface · 04/01/2021 22:55

Surely you assumed he was apologising for the fact he was recording you?

But were you also recording him, Smartphones at Dawn style? Who drew quickest?

Theunamedcat · 04/01/2021 22:56

The difference between a ring doorbell and a random filming you is your sticker that you have to display stating your recording them he did not do this

saraclara · 04/01/2021 22:56

I'm sure it felt really weird and disconcerting. But I get why he did it. These people earn next to nothing, and get wages docked if a customer scams them and says the stuff wasn't delivered.

So yep, your feelings were understandable, but his actions were too. And he's not going to rob you or anything.

WorraLiberty · 04/01/2021 22:59

You can't read the sticker until you're close enough to be recorded by the motion sensor though surely?

Luckybe40

He recorded your house for half and hour?

No, he recorded her house for 20 seconds, but it felt like half an hour!

HennyLenry · 04/01/2021 23:03

I am a takeaway delivery driver and a lot of customers try to scam by saying they haven't had their food delivered. I am told by the boss to take a photo of where it is left. On alcohol deliveries we wear a body cam which is recording.

Don't cause trouble OP.

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 04/01/2021 23:06

You’re massively overreacting, he apologised about recording you and clearly is afraid of getting in trouble again. Not nice to make complaints against him—your doorstep and front of house is also not somewhere where you have any “reasonable expectation of privacy.” I don’t understand why footage of the front of your house would be remotely helpful in a burglary, you’re really overreacting hugely. He can literally just get that off google earth.

Luckybe40 · 04/01/2021 23:08

So you freaked out that he was recording you and you triple checked he was actually recording you by .... watching your recording of him???Shock

Luckybe40 · 04/01/2021 23:08

I despair

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 04/01/2021 23:12

It must have felt creepy, so I sympathise with you, OP. But it was almost certainly innocent -- as PPs have said, he's been scammed and is now terrified of losing his job. So I sympathise with the driver too, even though he was OTT.

Wanderdust · 04/01/2021 23:14

Seems common now, delivery drivers take photos all the time now to prove delivery, don't stress.

BlueCatRedCat · 04/01/2021 23:16

You are being a total hypocrite, OP, and should feel ashamed of yourself. You are quite happy for some poor sod on minimum wage to deliver food to you, and quite happy to film him doing it. But you're prepared to get him sacked for protecting himself, in exactly the same way you are, against a potential scammer. You should ring up the restaurant and apologise for your over-reaction. The poor man handled the situation clumsily, but is probably very worried about losing his job and potentially being accused of stealing the food for himself. Hopefully his position is not in jeopardy following your call.

Those of us with Ring technology, and those of us who are relying on Amazon, DHL etc to deliver us the things that make life bearable at the moment, need to appreciate that delivery drivers are human beings, thrust into this shitty situation the same as the rest of us, with livelihoods, dependents and feelings too.

InTheSnow · 04/01/2021 23:20

I suspect you knew all along why he was filming you OP.

IfTheSockFits · 04/01/2021 23:20

I feel really sorry for takeaway delivery drivers. They are out in all weathers including late at night, get blamed for everything that goes wrong, and all for the privilege of being paid utterly shit wages.

BoomBoomsCousin · 04/01/2021 23:26

I am probably being over paranoid but it's just me and my little girl that live here so I feel quite vulnerable.

You aren't vulnerable. The UK is a very safe place. As a woman, you are more at risk of being attacked in the home if you live with a male partner than living on your own.

maggiso · 04/01/2021 23:29

Delivery drivers often photograph where they leave goods. This sounds like a step up to prove who took delivery?
