Yoga - worth persevering?

My 46 probably about three stone overweight and woefully inflexible. Grasping the bull by the horns I am trying to make some changes...one being that I started yoga a few days ago following the Adriene 30 day beginner thing...bugger me I’m useless. She is transitioning beautifully from pose to pose I’m pulling my legs into position and realising that my stomach is an impediment to me getting my forehead that close to the floor. My AIBU to ask, has anyone gone from embarrassingly bad to could hold their own in a class? How long can I expect this to take?

I honestly wouldnt bother with it OP..
i was in a similar situ some years back and found a combo of hill walking on the treadmill(11 incline mixed up with power walking on a 3 incline),rowing machine and just regular stretching of hammies/quads was a far quicker route to some serious weight loss/definition and flexibility. I didnt follow a diet just cut out junk like sweets, chips, cake etc and stuck to 1800 cals (roughly) per day.
Yoga may be a useful addition once you are at you goal for the meditation/mindfulness aspects of focus..but when you're on a weight loss journey its helpful to see real results in the shortest timeframe. It keeps you well motivated, keen to push on plus you feel inspired and powerful.
I just use a 3 pack of stretch bands when i can be arsed but nowadays get my exercise either out kayaking or at the gym.

I have tried to get into yoga many times but just find it very dull. Instead I do my own stretching and do press ups and sit ups which I figure does the same thing. I can't get on board with all this breathing shit.

@ListeningQuietly wow the video was amazing thank you for sharing!

Happy to set up a yoga corner here for anyone who is interested...but generally to start I would take a look at you tubers: Lesley Fightmaster/Yoga with Adrienne/HMF Yoga/ Time Sinesi ( yoga with Tim) and also LuluLemon have some free classes ... but I also agree you have to find what works for you. DH is delighted that I love yoga but doesn't feel the same way ..he likes to restore old furniture...that's his yoga... whatever yoga is it is not bendy shaped beautiful photos on instagram ...a lot of those people that take those photos are ex dancers or have hyper flexibility...good luck to them and they look great but the majority of us long time yogis are huffing and puffing around the mat just knowing the life is a little easier having maintained some kind of regular practice that suits us..no judgement ..no audience.

I'm the same age as you and was in your position in August of last year. I started yoga (specifically Adrienne 30 days of) and within about two months could do most of the poses. Now I'm almost able to do the splits, can do a crow pose (which I'm very proud of) and have shed a stone. I'm also watching my diet and not eating rubbish and I also started C25K and am now moving up to 10K.

I'm doing Adrienne's current 30 day programme and am frankly amazed at how far I've progressed. I do think it's worth it but I do think you need to be in the right frame of mind.

Also, it's free - what's not to like?
