Magnetic L Plates on plastic cars

Who thought this up? The blasted things keep falling off. I am currently in my third set and don’t even ask what happens when you go above 50mph. I have finally stuck the last lot onto the windows with blu-tak.

Fml.

I think I stuck mine in the inside of the car or used duct tape!

TheSpottedZebra · 03/01/2021 20:21

Plastic car? Are you Noddy?

wonderstuff · 03/01/2021 20:21

Taped mine on the inside of the rear window.

TheSpottedZebra · 03/01/2021 20:22

( I have no idea. Do cars come in plastic nowdays? )

CasperGutman · 03/01/2021 20:23

You can't use magnetic plates on a plastic (part of a) car. Buy a different kind.

wonderstuff · 03/01/2021 20:23

@TheSpottedZebra

Plastic car? Are you Noddy?
Ago and I presume C1 & 106 have no metal on the rear of the car.

@TheSpottedZebra

Plastic car? Are you Noddy?
Pretty much, they wouldn’t fit on my kids red C1, saw the top off and add noddy and big ears 😂
wonderstuff · 03/01/2021 20:24

Aygo- auto correct!

ScarletUnderkill · 03/01/2021 20:25

I know you can’t use a magnet on plastic. If you have links to any alternatives then please post them as I can’t find any on Amazon and Wilco only sells the magnetic type.

I never knew about plastic cars!
Could you put something metal the other side, eg of boot, so that the magnet can attract to it?

amicissimma · 03/01/2021 20:28

Punch holes in them and tie them on to some part. That's what I used to do before magnetic ones came along.

BarryGlendenning · 03/01/2021 20:28

I used window sticker ones for the back, magnetic on the front.

MaskingForIt · 03/01/2021 20:34

In the olden day’s there were no magnetic plates and everyone had to tape them on, or tie them on through the front grill thing.

Put some holes in the corners of yours and tie them on.

ScarletUnderkill · 03/01/2021 20:38

I have a Ford Fiesta so it’s all moulded plastic apart from the bonnet and boot door. There’s also nothing to tie the L plates to as the bumper is moulded plastic.

I had ones with string on them (eg www.amazon.co.uk/Kent-Car-Care-GKEL2000-L-Plates/dp/B004VDV2W2?tag=mumsnetforu03-21) but you could probably do the same by putting holes in the one you've got.

Or try one with suction cups - eg www.amazon.co.uk/PROFESSIONAL-SURFACES-INCLUDING-PLASTIC-BODYWORK/dp/B01M5FBQ39?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

ScarletUnderkill · 03/01/2021 21:01

Thanks @AliMonkey - I remember the suction cup ones when I was learning to drive (it’s my DD who needs the L plates). Off to Amazon!
