Weight and diabetes

(sorry to post here, but I'm desperately seeking advice. Have also posted in the diabetes chart)

Hello, my dad has just found out that he has type 2 diabetes, after being pre-diabetic for some time. His mum and two brothers are also diabetic.

I know I'm at a high risk of developing it because of this, and because of the fact that I am obese. I am 29, 5"4 and weigh over 20 stone (1.5 stone gained since March). I will say I am quite fit, very muscular, and I have no health issues.

I need to get the weight off asap. Healthy eating and exercise are not a problem for me, however I do suffer from binge eating disorder. I am not receiving any treatment for this as I am too embarrassed to go to the doctor, although my binges are a lot less frequent. I also believe that I am addicted to sugar.

I would be so grateful if anyone could give me advice on the best food to eat / foods to avoid, so that I can have the best chance of losing weight and hopefully avoiding getting diabetes myself.
Are there any foods that will increase my chance of getting diabetes??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

For reference, my diet mainly consists of fish, porridge, lentil soup, quorn, fruit, salad, potatoes, pasta, pizza, eggs, kidney beans, yoghurt, peas, sweet corn, rice. A lot of chocolate.

The recommended diet for pre-D and T2D is low carb.

Look at www.diabetes.co.uk forums and also DietDoctor is great.

From your list I avoid everything bar fish, salad, eggs, yoghurt (but only Greek), chocolate - but I know my limits with that!

Low carb all the way to lose weight and avoid diabetes. I was pre diabetic, now I'm not due to low carbing. All carbs are turned into glucose by your body even the so called healthy carbs.

However please, please go to your gp for support in your binge eating disorder.

Notreallyhappy · 03/01/2021 17:48

Low carb higher protein diet is needed. There are threads that can help. 5:2 blood sugar diet etc.
Also call.ypur surgery and speak with someone

britnay · 03/01/2021 17:50

ditch the carbs (no more than 5g carbs per day), increase your vegetables, protein and water

Oblomov20 · 03/01/2021 17:50

I'm a T1 and I list the most weight on low carb, Michael Mosleys 800 is harsh but I found it incredibly effective and thus I managed it for 8 weeks or so.

You wouldn't be eating much veg with no more than 5gms of carbs a day!
ElizaLaLa · 03/01/2021 19:06

You could try exante, or cut carbs.

secular89 · 03/01/2021 23:03

Low carb. You can do it!

icklepiglet · 03/01/2021 23:40

From personal experience, you will not have long term success with any diet unless you tackle your binge eating disorder. It's like sticking a plaster on a broken leg. Please go to your GP and get the help you need.

Bookriddle · 03/01/2021 23:43

As someone who is t2 and in remission, low carb and exercise is the best way to go!

Join the low carb bootcamp, we start tomorrow!

Get over the embarresment and see you GP. When you can be honest with yourself and others about the binges, you will stand a chance of success. Dieticians and therapists can also work if you don't trust your doctor to be empathetic.
Left to your own devices on a low carb diet, you run the risk inventing really creative ways to binge.
It once took me the best part of a month to convince a bringer that coffee with ghee and coconut oil was not a fantastic idea.

stevalnamechanger · 03/01/2021 23:55

Read up on Fast 800 . Lots of fb support groups

Was primarily designed for pre diabetics

LittleMermaidRose · 04/01/2021 10:00

Thank you everybody for the advice. After reading through all the comments, I think it will be easy for me to modify my diet and cut out carbs. My downfall will be chocolate, but I will try my very best.

I don't feel quite ready to go to the doctor yet, but I have ordered a few books online to read through.

Thank you for all the support! I think I can do it!

@LittleMermaidRose good luck to you xxx

Gingerkittykat · 04/01/2021 18:48

If I were you I would increase my protein, I found a big portion of protein really helped me with the binges.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 04/01/2021 18:50

@FrogFairy

The 8 week blood sugar diet is worth looking at.

]]

there's a free website for it too: thebloodsugardiet.com

and second hand copies of the book for under £3 from abebooks.co.uk

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 04/01/2021 18:52

You can still have very dark chocolate in moderation!
think one or two squares 😢

lydia7986 · 04/01/2021 18:59

I’m also genetically at risk for T2 diabetes, and I use intermittent fasting to try to reduce my chances of developing it.

I eat a regular amount of calories, but I eat them between 12pm and 8pm. Your insulin levels spike whenever you eat something, so by having a 16 hour stretch in which I eat nothing, my insulin levels are low for a significant period of time everyday.

Studies have shown that this improves insulin sensitivity (it’s declining insulin sensitivity that causes T2 diabetes).

stopgap · 04/01/2021 19:05

Low carb is the way. I’ve been teetering in and out of the prediabetic zone since my youngest was born seven years ago (I had GD with that pregnancy).

I have no weight to lose (5’7 and 125 pounds) but have to be strict, otherwise my PCOS symptoms start acting up and my A1C goes above 6.

Aside from the fish, are you mostly plant-based? I think a mostly vegan diet is a huge challenge when you’re up against diabetes.

stopgap · 04/01/2021 19:07

^^As per the poster above, I also do IF, usually between 12-7.

LittleMermaidRose · 04/01/2021 19:35

I've downloaded the 8 Week Blood Sugar Diet to my kindle so I'm going to make a start on that tonight.

Yes I eat fish but no other meat. But my diet of veg isn't too varied either but I'm going to work on changing that.

I've done IF a couple of times but only one day at a time - is this something I should try to do every day?

Also, is it still ok for me to have the occasional pizza or pasta?

If you have BED, dieting of any form (be it for health reasons or to lose weight) will make your binges worse. Look up the restrict-binge cycle.

I would advise reading this book & attempting the programme in it before starting any diets, it’s what I use with
clients with BED or bulimia
