Is a peloton bike worth it?

Would like to get in shape having had a baby last year and have had terrible sciatica ever since . Would a peloton bike be the solution? Really interested and used to love spin classes pre DS just scared by the cost . Love to know if anyone has used own post natal ?

You'll find several discussions about Peleton and its pros and cons on the Exercise board:

I think really expensive for what it is. Could get yourself a second hand spin bike on eBay and use spinstream - much cheaper, I think £5.99 a month just for classes.

Serenschintte · 03/01/2021 13:29

Have you tried osteopathy for the sciatica?
Also worth having it fully and medically investigate.
Pilates is amazing for back pain. Your money would probably be better spent on 10- 20 sessions of 1-1 classes with an experienced pilates teacher

EnjoyingTheSilence · 03/01/2021 13:33

Yes it’s expensive but I think it’s worth it. I took the plunge as they offer a 30 day free trial, if I didn’t like it I can send it back and get a full refund. I love it. I love the variety of classes and instructors.

Don’t forget it’s not just the bike, there’s the monthly fee too but it’s cheaper than a gym membership (for me anyway!)

I like the leaderboard, I like being able to compete against others (even though I’m really far down the list!) I like being able to look at all the numbers and see how I’m doing. It’s very easy to use.

Yes other bikes may be as good and cheaper but for me it’s the whole package. If you use it, it’s not a waste, if you don’t, it is!

Buy a spin bike and see what you think. If in a years time, you can't get enough of it, spend money then. Or if it is a clothes horse, you have your answer..

I'm getting a different spin bike (recommended on here £530) delivered this week

I'm currently trying to decide between Les Mills, Echelon and Peleton apps for classes though!

McPie · 03/01/2021 14:48

I miss spin classes and have been thinking about getting a bike for ages but I looked at Peleton and was put off by the price of the bike and the subscription! Instead I have bought a spin bike from Amazon and will try the workouts on Les Mills as I already have a subscription. If they turn out to be rubbish I will put the spin qualification I got in 2019 (that I have never used Grin) to use and create my own.

I have one and both DH and I use it. I haven’t used it as much as I hoped because I had IVF before Christmas and was really poorly but since I recovered I’ve used it every other day and DH has used it probably twice a week, between the two of us the monthly fee is less than a gym membership. I also use the yoga classes and strength classes on the app.

EmmaStone · 03/01/2021 16:22

We've had a normal spin bike for years (bought secondhand from eBay), and during lockdown, my health insurance provided free Peloton app access, so I've been using it for about 6 months. I really like it, but couldn't justify the cost of the bike plus full subscription (digital subscription only is £12.99 a month I think, which I'd be happy to pay once my health insurance stops supporting it). I have been tempted, as I'd like to access the leaderboard and make use of power zones, but to justify the cost, I'd have to give up my other forms of fitness - a PT fortnightly, and yoga classes - and I'm not willing to do that.

cyclingmad · 03/01/2021 16:22

Buy a skipping rope and a kettlebell (cost you under £30 in total) much cheaper and much better workout from them.

Skipping rope benefits are as good as someone running and kettlebell builds and tones your entire body.

bakereld · 03/01/2021 16:27

They're quite expensive/a risk to buy if you don't already have the habit of exercising regularly...I'd buy a regular spin bike first and see how you get on with it.

StealingYourWiFi · 03/01/2021 16:27

I absolutely love mine and use it most days. The bike gives you access to the leaderboard and being competitive I LOVE that!

There’s currently a 2 month free app trial which will give you access to all the classes it’s not just spin. They have strength (with dumbbells), cardio, HIIT, bootcamps, yoga, meditation, indoor and outdoor running, stretching, Pilates and barre . All the classes I’ve tried so far are great!

The community side is fantastic too, there’s always events going on and stuff to keep things interesting.

I have a code for £100 off the accessory pack which is essential if you want the shoes and weights - you use the weights on the bike during some classes!

My code is: 9FWADR

StealingYourWiFi · 03/01/2021 16:28

Also if you wanted to resell then they hold the their value massively - some sell for more than they were bought for due to the high demand

Workyticket · 03/01/2021 17:25

Does anyone use Peleton on a normal spin bike? Would I need to £40 one or just the £12 ish one?

CockapooMum · 03/01/2021 21:13

I ordered mine today and delivery is 22nd Feb. I've got a code if anyone orders one I'd love it if you'd use my code as we both get £100 off. My code is FQQTNK. Thanks

EmmaStone · 03/01/2021 21:16

@Workyticket yes, I've got a normal spin bike, and the monthly digital app is £12.99. With the Peloton bike, the monthly subscription is £39. That gives you access to metrics, leaderboard etc. I've joined a Peloton digital users group on Facebook, and some have managed various workarounds to get similar metrics, but that's not really a factor for me. The main thing is you can work out your resistance and cadence to match Peloton's (so on my bike, my RPM is the cadence, and my resistance goes 1-20, and Peloton is 1-100, so I just assume every 5 points of resistance on Peloton equals 1 on mine.

itsme7 · 04/01/2021 20:29

My peloton was delivered this morning and I did my first class earlier. It was great - really motivating and very quiet. I was much less worried about annoying the neighbours than when I do a normal Hiit class. Definitely expensive but it feels really sturdy - it’s a proper studio bike. I used to pay £20 a class (London) so it’ll balance out in time.

287xx · 04/01/2021 20:32

I don’t own one but have used one a lot and I do think they’re different to a regular spin bike plus spin class subscription, as the screen and bike are linked for your metrics and stats etc. I’m competitive so I find the leaderboard very motivating and makes such a difference for the quality of my workout, it’s easy for me when using Les Mills on demand to just slack a bit. I would 100% invest in one if I had the space!

hernamewasrio · 05/01/2021 00:26

I'm addicted and do a couple of classes a day. I have a regular spin bike approx £300 and bought a projector and disco lights 😂 it's BRILLIANT. The only exercise I've really jumped out of bed for. At £12.99 a month it's worth every penny and the first 2 months we're free.

M0rT · 05/01/2021 00:32

I just came on to recommend Pilates for your sciatica, also the only normal (as in not an athlete) woman I know with a six pack does Pilates three times a week for her back. Smile

MrsGoodman · 05/01/2021 00:43

I love mine and use it almost everyday!
