To not come back to the UK?

DH and I left the UK mid December to visit relatives in a non corridor country. The situation in the UK has deteriorated significantly since we left. We are due back at the end of next week, and will have to isolate. I predict all schools will shut before too long. DH was wfh anyway and I’m between jobs. Kids are primary school age and at an indie, so we wouldn’t loose their school places. Country we are in has a very low infection rate and aside from mask wearing life is pretty normal. Should we just stay for a few months?
YABU= come home YANBU=stay

I would stay on but prepare in case the situation deteriorates there

Are you visiting a home country, or are you on holiday to somewhere new?

loulouljh · 02/01/2021 08:25

Don't come back for now..its a complete and utter shambles.

Hi OP.

I live in MENA, & have dc at school here. We have no plans to visit the U.K. for months Sad.

Or at least, I don't. Dc's idiot father is currently visiting (whole other thread probably right there Confused) & is busily geeing up teenage ds to go & spend a month in the U.K. 'but we are doing distance learning anyway mum, I'll just log on from dad's' - yeah right...

But anyway, I think you're being very sensible. Stay put & get the dc's school to sort out DL for now.

What a gift!!!

Stay where you are!!

Livelovebehappy · 02/01/2021 08:35

Seems like a no brainer to me.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 02/01/2021 08:35

Stay where you are. Everything is very drab and uneasy here, and you have a rare opportunity for your DC to spend some time in a different culture. Win-win

@sofato5miles
Slightly different sitch here, i live overseas and my daughter is home from an UK boarding school. We are keeping her here for at least a month more until the UK looks like it has it under control. Her school has a great online learning set up, so it is easy
Very sensible decision to keep your daughter safe, I’d do exactly the same.

Do you trust the reporting of the virus where you are? People constantly criticise this country, but we have a very robust press that holds politicians to account.

glassbrightly · 02/01/2021 09:37

Your DH needs to check with his employer. My employer would absolutely not agree to this given the personal and corporate tax risk.

I can't remember if it's 3 months or 6 months but if you live outside of the UK for whichever it is and need a DBS certificate in the following 5 years you have to get a police certificate from the country you were in and it can be a total ball ache. There are a huge number of reasons why you might need a DBS in the UK and it can be a real nightmare getting one when you've spent time abroad (speaking from personal experience on this)

Sorry!

Are you in receipt of any benefits? That will need looking at. You can’t have UC while out of the country.

With 2 kids in private school. I doubt it!*

Made me smile too! Even without 2 kids in private school I’m pretty sure UC doesn’t stretch to a family of 4 holidaying in Africa for a month even if they don’t have to pay for accommodation.

Update. So we didn’t come home and are still in the same country. Due back early next week......but are considering extending for at least 2 months and reassessing. We are aware that we may get stuck here indefinitely, but also considering never coming back to the UK. DH would Have to resign if we decided to stay forever, but his work have agreed to him staying longer. My work is internationally portable and we could get a work visa for this country via my job. I’m not sure I’m brave enough to just go ‘let’s do it’ and ask Pickford to pack up the house and ship the contents here!
