To think the government should ban 'one day only' offers in tier 4 areas.

The local butchers offers a number of different weekly promotions all of which are only available on one day a week and which must be ordered in advance on Facebook (meaning it is easy to see who is taking advantage of these offers). It is pretty clear from looking at the list of people commenting on these posts that one of the major effects of these offers is that they are causing several people to visit the shop multiple times a week (to buy a quantity of food that would almost certainly be bought in one go if the offers were on all week) going against the guidance to shop as infrequently as possible. In order to reduce the numbers of people making unnecessarily frequent shopping trips I believe the government should be telling retailers that if they want to advertise promotions that these should be available for at least a week (unadvertised reduced to clear 'yellow stickers' should be allowed to continue) and not restricted to a singular day.

Totally unreasonable. The government are not our minders. Business owners should be free to do what they like- if they are choosing to be irresponsible (I'm not saying this butcher is- they are free to run their business as they see fit!) and their customers are choosing to go out multiple times (against guidelines) leave them to it!!

I think this one has to come down to personal responsibility. I doubt there's even the manpower to enforce such a rule, if it was put into place.

Not aware of any specific research into whether three trips to the butcher in a week increases the R rate.

chatwoo · 02/01/2021 05:04

Clearly the butcher would like to stay in business and financially afloat.

Couldnt bring myself to care about this to be honest. If they have to book in advance on Facebook they will be limiting numbers. What is the actual risk? Pretty small. The government cannot provide "advice" on ever tiny issue and they certainly can't police it.

Actually, maybe it spreads out visits, as in if I’m interested in burgers for example I’ll go on a Tuesday whereas another customer may go on Friday because they want the steak offer.

These threads and this mentality needs to stop.
