Sending children to nursery this month, unreasonable?

I live in S.E London (Tier 4)

Despite all primaries being told to close, my child's nursery will be reopening next week on the basis that the children who attend are vulnerable (special needs)

I'm very conflicted about sending him in, largely due to this new strain.

We have had covid in our home in July (I tested positive and had a mild illness but couldn't get tests for the kids. Whilst there's a chance the DC have already had it, that would have been the old strain and there are no guarantees that you can't catch it twice anyway. I'm still very weary.

He doesn't need to be there for childcare as my work place is closed for the foreseeable, but he loves going and the routine is important for him.

We bubble with my DM, in her 60's.

With all that in mind WWYD?

YANBU - I would send him in

YABU - I wouldn't send him

We are in tier 4 and DD will be in nursery as normal. I can’t see the issue unless you have a child that is medically vulnerable to Covid. And I’m very cautious!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 01/01/2021 22:04

Personally no but I am massively risk adverse.

FelicityBob · 01/01/2021 22:07

Mine are going too. Wouldn’t even consider not sending them, they need to go for their mental health

None of us have any underlying conditions and nor does my DM, other than the fact she's an older lady she's fit and healthy.

I was relatively calm about nursery/school until all of the frenzy about the new strain and now I'm a little more anxious.

My view is probably skewed because a nursery nurse I know spent last night at a house party with 13 other people.

I’m in a very similar situation. I actually have covid at the moment, but still have no idea what to do!

PapercraftNinja · 01/01/2021 22:42

Sorry to be clear we are isolating until the 11th anyway but not sure how I feel about dcs going back to nursery at alll

mynameiscalypso · 01/01/2021 22:49

I'm sending DS back to nursery so long as it's open (not due to open until 11th so things may change...). There's no way I will be able to work with him at home - was still on maternity leave last time round. They did have one case in his bubble last term but nobody caught it as far as we know and we're happy with the precautions they're taking. If I didn't have to work, I might be less confident about it though

I'm south east and I'm going to phone the nursery next week. We were tier 4 before Christmas and the nursery asked parents to keep their children home unless they needed to come in. If that's still the case, I'll keep my child home.

I think our nursery are more worried about the staff catching it from the children than anything else

SarahAndQuack · 01/01/2021 23:08

If you don't need to send him, maybe keep him off for a couple of days and see how it goes? You can always send him if it becomes clear he's really distraught missing it, but as it's just been Christmas, his routine has been disrupted anyway.

I don't think it's unreasonable to send children into nursery (I will be sending mine). But it's not worth getting anxious over either.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 01/01/2021 23:13

If you don’t need the childcare and you have a bubble with your mum I’d not be using the place.

For me, it would be the not knowing if everyone else there has been abiding by the rules etc so the risk is too unknown.
