Greek gods

We were doing quizzes over lockdown and I know nothing about the Greek gods. I have heard of them but no idea who is who. Am I the only one? DH knew all about them from school but unless I was asleep that day we never covered them. Is a there a child’s / simple book about them?

Absolutely and entirely D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths.

It's beautiful, easy, smart, but also accessible for children. I highly, highly recommend.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 01/01/2021 20:55

I like the Robert Graves one too.

singsingbluesilver · 01/01/2021 20:58

Robert Graves !!! If you get into the myth the read I Claudius and Claudius the God - or get them on DVD. Amazing, brilliant - just sublime - as an intro to that era of Roman history they cannot be beaten.

Nancydrawn · 01/01/2021 20:59

Actually should have written D'Aulaires'--a husband and wife team. They also do wonderful versions of Norse myths.

clairethewitch70 · 01/01/2021 20:59

theoi.com is a great website which explains the stories by deity. My main reference.

WeeMadArthur · 01/01/2021 21:00

We did Classical Studies at school and I picked up all sorts of info that is bobbling about in the back of my brain only to resurface when I watch quiz shows with DH. He is constantly surprised by the level of useless information I can dredge up.

I have bought D'Aulaire's Book of Greeek Myths for DS though.

Thanks ChestnutStuffing. I will definitely give it a go Smile

Enjoying this thread Smile

We (DD, DS and I) like reading/talking about Greek and Roman mythology , and I reckon we'll move on to other mythologies, too. The DC are 20 and 17, and find this a great subject to discuss, they can go on for ages.

RusholmeRuffian · 01/01/2021 21:15

Robert Graves is a great place to start. I would also recommend listening to Natalie Haynes Stands Up For The Classics which should be on BBC sounds app.

Scarby9 · 01/01/2021 21:18

I recommend any of the Geraldine McCaughrean retellings - beautiful lyrical language as well as all the best stories.

Horrible histories series has absolutely incredible books on Greek mythology. For kids but I find them just as interesting as a grown up Wink All the shagging has been taken out though, which when you move on to other books realise is an awful lot!

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 02/01/2021 09:15

I loved both Circe and the Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, for different perspectives.

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 02/01/2021 09:16

My kids know everything about Greek gods thanks to the Percy Jackson book series!

@NoZoomAtTheInn

I had a book by Enid Blyton all about Greek mythology when I was about 8 or 9.
Yes, this was my first introduction to Greek myth too! I was little enough to find the illustrations of Clytie and Daphne scary...
singsingbluesilver · 02/01/2021 10:47

For myth lovers on here - you will love the crashcourse history series on you tube. It looks at myths from all over the world, and from all eras - theme by theme. It is absolutely fascinating when you see how many similarities there are in myths from around the world.

TurquoiseDragon · 02/01/2021 16:53

Was talking about this thread with DD yesterday, and she's recommended a podcast I'd not heard of, called "Let's Talk About Myths, Baby! A Greek and Roman Mythology Podcast" by Liv Albert.

I've found it on Spotify, and plan to settle in and listen while I crochet. It may not be suitable for children, though, I've not listened yet.

I love that series. I think it was Jung who explained the similarities in terms of the Gods being an embodiment of universal consciousness (or something similar).

I’d also love to know why apples crop up so much (even in the most famous story of the Enlightenment).

grannyinapram · 03/01/2021 11:13

crash course mythology
it covers more than just Greek myths but its all very interesting and great to watch with children

20mum · 03/01/2021 11:51

By chance, just skimmed Robert Graves , gaining the impression it's all about men and rape and torture and massacre, with a mention a quarter way through that some woman who was queen in her own right had decided to be the first to fail to kill herself on the death of her husband.

This one?

I love mythology and this was the book that sparked that interest so I keep it on my shelf to remind me of that feeling when I'm having trouble remembering. Great book

The Myths & Legends podcast has some excellent episodes on Greek legends.

I recommend starting at episode 131A and 131B to learn about the pantheon.

TeaEgg · 03/01/2021 22:10

@pepsicolagirl, that cover has given me a happy flashback.
