..The root cause for this is as sirfredfredgeoerge says, Boeing refused to shell out on a new product to compete with Airbus's very successful A320 family ..and instead tried to limp along by stretching the 73, chucking in a few bodges if that stretching introduced problems. Mix in a strong does of "regulatory capture" and what happened was almost inevitable
Only good news is the new improved, very much tested Max should be as safe as an Airbus..
As for will people fly on them? If your airline of choice is Ryanair then before too long you'll have no option..and on the day you'll probably struggling to recognise if you are headed an aircraft formerly known as the 737 Max...rebranding, etc.
In any event when push come to shove comes to choosing flights most passengers don't care about the airframe, number of engines, etc, they care about the ticket price.
