To not want another dog

DP keeps suggesting that we get another dog. We have 1 and she does love other dogs and would probably thrive from the company and play mate but my fear is been robbed ???
She's just an amazing donkey who's great around the kids and so chilled

He doesn't want just an average dog he wants a specific type that will cost a lot of money.... he wants to stay with the same breed and our current dog cost us over 2 thousand 7 years ago so to get the same type now is triple if not more.
Financially we are okay to get one and the kids would be made up as the adore the dog - that isn't my problem

I'm just so so mortified we would be robbed or targeted for the dog?
Iv just seen it so much over dogs been robbed etc Specially in our area I just don't want that to happen to us. Our dog is old and she has no lady parts so she isn't of any use but if they seen a puppy it's like a jackpot ???

AIBU to say no to the dog out of fear or do we get one and take the risk?

I have full home security and cameras and I have shock systems on all my windows and doors etc but that really isn't the point. What if I'm out walking or something ??
Am I over thinking ??

And you could be knocked over when you next crossed the road. You can't live like that. Yes, make sure you've thought about security, take all the measures you can but ultimately that's all you can do. I was like that once about my cat but after I let her out little by little I grew more confident and less anxious. If I hadn't got her because of my fears I would have missed loving such a wonderfully bonkers cat!

Sunflowergirl1 · 01/01/2021 08:31

Do you really want all the cost and expense? You have one already

I wouldn't especially want though to have to guard it from theft and a lot are being stolen

FestiveStuffing · 01/01/2021 08:32

Get a different, less desirable, type of dog?

notdaddycool · 01/01/2021 08:34

This may be the last time it’s fair to get one before you’re making an aging dog live with a boisterous puppy. You can’t live like that.

MinnieMountain · 01/01/2021 08:36

£6,000ish on a dog? Ouch.

LobotheBotanist · 01/01/2021 08:36

Dog prices have gone mad indeed

We are waiting to pick up an unwanted dog after the pandemic instead

I do wonder if dogs costing more than a car will be a thing from now on? My dog was £200, but the breed now goes for £1000 which is mad for a cross breed imo?!

But who knows

TheMobileSiteMadeMeSignup · 01/01/2021 08:39

If your dog is already an old lady there is no guarantee that she will be OK with a puppy in her space. Theft issue aside, is it fair to bring an energetic young dog into her home? I would let her have her last few years in peace.

I would also go via a breed specific rescue for another dog. I'm going to assume that there will be one as at that kind of cost it sounds like a trendy designer breed so probably plenty of them dumped onto rescues when idiot owners (not including you in that statement,OP) realise how much work dogs are beyond the cuteness factor.

captainprincess · 01/01/2021 08:40

I'm intrigued with what breed it is that costs £6000?

spidermomma · 01/01/2021 08:41

She is only 7 she's very healthy and she is crazy herself, she sees my mums puppy (now 2) all the time an they love it. It just keeps her busy and happy.
Definitely isn't cheap though but she's such a good dog i would like to stick with the same breed myself.
I suppose I will look with him and if it's ment to be it'll be. I'm also cautious of puppy farms so I will be making sure I Try find a family and doing my research on them also! The world just isn't what it used to be x

whatsupbuttercupx · 01/01/2021 08:41

I need to know what the breed is so i can understand why they cost so much also so i can google pup pics of the breed

spidermomma · 01/01/2021 08:43

I wouldn't get a rescue as I have young children, my brother got one and 5 years down the line she turned and bit his daughter on the face, no signs she was a brilliant dog just suddenly turned and that scares me. If I had no children of corse I would rescue I just wouldn't take that chance x

OP posts:
spidermomma · 01/01/2021 08:45

It's a bull dog type breed x

'She's just an amazing donkey who's great around the kids and so chilled'

HmmGrin

whatsupbuttercupx · 01/01/2021 08:47

So a french bulldog?

whatsupbuttercupx · 01/01/2021 08:49

Or english?
I just looked on pets4homes for educational purposes and i an shocked at the price! Dog breeders are so greedy, my gosh

Monkeytapper · 01/01/2021 08:50

I was set against getting another dog but we did and don’t regret it. They play together, cuddle up together and can’t imagine just having one dog now.

spidermomma · 01/01/2021 08:59

A British one. It's shocking isn't it !!

We are still in contact with the people we got our dog from, and I love that an they had young kids so she's always been used to it so ideally I'd like to get one from a family with children again. If we get one !!

My SIL has the same dog and we was dog sitting whilst she was on holiday a few years ago and they locked- we had puppy's and we gave them to friends so that she always sees them and I knew where they was. I couldn't of kept them all as I was pregnant and it wasnt supposed to happen!! I was mortified and she had her lady bits done after it !! But I don't get how people can charge so much for a dog personally but then you get fools like my dp who pay it.

@lyinginthegutterstaringatstars she's a donkey as she's got such a big ass she sends everything flying hahaha ! We. Have a tv in the toy room on a low stand and the amount of times she's knocked it off with her bum when she's playing and walks backwards! Supprised she's only broken 1 (jinxed myself now) She's just so gentle and cuddly though she's great!!!! X

pawsies · 01/01/2021 09:08

Don't get another English bulldog unless you like visiting the vet a lot. It may cost you 6k for a pup but you could easily spend that on operations to help with breathing problems and opening up nares etc.
I also think you might have enough on your plate considering she's still quite active and knocks things off etc. Do you really want 2 dogs doing that?

What characteristics would you be looking for in another dog? Put breed aside for now. What would be your ideal dog checklist?

spidermomma · 01/01/2021 09:16

@pawsies I havnt had any problems with my dog now so I wouldn't say that is an issue about vets. Aslong as their on the correct diet and weighed regularly to check their in the correct limit and have their oils and vitamins you shouldn't have any problems with the dog.

Isnt anything specific about a dog or breed we was looking for just another family pet. We was just getting the same type as our current dog because she has been so good and how she is around the house etc. She's also very well trained and behaved, The kids knock things off daily so that again doesn't matter Aslong as everyone is happy in the house why would it matter, things get knocked over you just pick them up, if something breaks it isn't the end of the world things can be replaced, happiness and memory's can't be and the dog brings them happy memories for us- family walks, days out she's their, in the car, she's their! , holidays in the uk. She is their with us, taking the kids to bed, she helps us hahaha she's just fab I think I am going to consider it and have a look but I am not rushing into it until (if ) we find the right dog and family x

Is it an Alapaha OP?

SelkieQualia · 01/01/2021 09:20

Crazy prices started with the designer breeders. The pure bred breeders then wondered why they were barely breaking even, with properly health tested dogs, so they increased prices to match.

GwendolineWindowlene · 01/01/2021 09:29

I know someone who has an English bulldog who mentioned casually in passing that the dog had been spayed and had her nostrils widened. I was really shocked that this is just seen as a routine thing, that a young dog will need nasal surgery because of the breeding.

I agree, OP, the world just isn’t what it used to be.

spidermomma · 01/01/2021 09:45

@GwendolineWindowlene we havnt had to have anything done we had the spade because she got a hernia due to getting so exited and jumping around an she's caused it, that was only a year ago last week so we havnt really had any problems!
But this is why I want a genuine breeder not one joust for these designer dogs, we got her before the designer dogs came about so it honk this is why she's so healthy as it was a true breeder who carers for the dogs with love not just pound signs. This is the trouble to now find someone like him again to get a good family dog and not one that's going to be ill as it's been poorly cared for xx

MaskingForIt · 01/01/2021 09:45

I'm just so so mortified we would be robbed or targeted for the dog?

Why would you be embarrassed or ashamed that you would be robbed or targeted?

Do you mean horrified rather than mortified? They don’t mean the same thing.
