I have the fucking cold from hell (have had Covid earlier in the year and no cough just typical cold symptoms x100).

I am 8 months pregnant and colds seem to have literally hit me like a train during pregnancy.

I can't sleep at all, my throat is burning, my nose is streaming and won't stop, I cannot stop sneezing, I'm cold and shivery and I've literally just cried like a child because I feel so rubbish embarrassing.

The only place I feel relatively comfortable and snot free is the shower in a super steamy bathroom.

I've been sat down in the shower now for about 40 minutes. I don't want to get out.

AIBU to live in here for the next fucking 3-4 hours? How long is reasonable to sit in a shower for?

I'm 25 weeks and exactly the same. Why did I never appreciate the likes of lemsip, sudafed and night nurse before? I've been drinking lots of fluids and taking paracetamol regularly. Vicks does help as someone has suggested - rub some on your chest and put some in boiling water and inhale the vapours. Oh and hot milk with a little honey! Really hope you feel better soon

GnomeDePlume · 01/01/2021 00:36

Full sympathy from me.

I had one cold after another in the last month before DD2 was born. Finished up with the flu from hell, a chest infection and Bell's palsy. I had an ELCS, the anaesthetic was bliss as I could cough without pain.

This was millennium new year. I couldnt have cared less!

@Graphista

This is gonna sound weird but...

Cold compress directly on your nose! I'm talking across the bridge, cheeks partially AND over nostrils - your nose itself swells when congested and makes it feel even more congested. As I say I know it sounds weird but it really does work - 1st recommended to me by practice nurse who suffered similarly herself

Check with dr re safe decongestant remedies to use even natural ones as eg certain essential oils which are commonly used as natural decongestants can eg trigger onset of labour so you do need to be careful I think saline sprays are ok but check first

Another odd thing which I never knew myself until I experienced it, congestion or worsening congestion can occasionally for some be an indication of rising bp which does of course need monitoring so keep an eye on that. I had horrific congestion which I put down to a cold towards the end of my pregnancy with dd, vanished literally as soon as dd delivered (I'd been dx with and treated accordingly re pre-eclampsia) I mentioned this to a midwife as it was weird to me and she said it can be a rare symptom of high bp for some people.

Fluids yes but as pp cautioned don't overdo this. Sips rather than gulps you don't want indigestion either as well as everything else.

Feeling ill is rotten at best of times let alone when heavily pregnant feel for you, hope you're feeling better soon Thanks

Thanks very much I'll try the compress now. The thought of something cold is actually quite pleasant now. I've switched from being cold to being too hot 🥴

I had flu when pregnant with ds1. I spent 2 weeks in bed feeling as though I was dying.

So you have my greatest sympathy.

Look after yourself and do what you need to do to feel marginally better (within reason). I ditto the chamomile steam though if you have any tea bags.

toomuchfaster · 01/01/2021 00:42

Saline nasal spray! Safe in pregnancy and for newborns! I lived on it with DD as pregnancy made me congested.

TotalWipeOutG · 01/01/2021 00:42

I'll have to find some camomile tea bags tomorrow and give that a go too. I wasn't prepared, I was absolutely fine yesterday no inkling of anything, I literally just woke up like this this morning!

Maybe a stupid question but I have some camomile oil that I use in my diffuser, could this work the same maybe if I add a few drops to boiling water?

Oil diffusers really help. Especially with some eucalyptus oil in them.

mollibu · 01/01/2021 00:42

Hi, OP.

Sorry you're feeling poorlyThanks I tested positive back in April, and received my 2nd positive result. (Weekly testing at work) I've been full up with a cold but not typical covid symptoms. Absolutely possible to catch it twice as I found out yesterday morning Sad

Hope you feel better soon!

TotalWipeOutG · 01/01/2021 00:45

Unfortunately can't use eucalyptus oil in it as it's toxic to the pets!

I do have some camomile pet safe stuff though which I'll pop in it.

Vicks Vaporub on the soles of your feet, and then cover over with socks!
Hope you feel better soon x

You poor thing. I can recommend the baby easy breathe or breathe easy bubble bath from Asda. Its in their baby toiletries range and is green. It’s amazing when you have a cold, unblocks everything and feels so soothing. I use it
More than my children!

Good luck OP

SeaToSki · 01/01/2021 01:14

Take a vit d, magnesium and zinc supplement. You are probably low in all of them and they all are needed for your immune system to kick ass. You can take extra vit d, up to 4000iu but only take the recommended amount of magnesium and zinc

caringcarer · 01/01/2021 01:26

Hop into bed with your hot lemon and honey and an electric blanket. Prop yourself up on about 4 or 5 pillows. Let do pamper you. Get the tissues with Aloe Vera as they are kinder on your nose. Get vitamin C and D tablets.

jgjgjgjgjg · 01/01/2021 01:40

Are you taking paracetamol regularly?

You can also take some hay-fever antihistimines including loratadine or cetirizine.

KnitFastDieWarm · 01/01/2021 01:50

Oh you poor thing, i remember having a bad cold while about 7 months pregnant and feeling a sort of hallowed reverence towards the forbidden fruit of sudafed etc while sniffling pathetically with my permitted paracetamol and (alcohol-free!) hot toddy Grin

Hot honey and lemon with turmeric is quite soothing (if you’re allowed it when pregnant, pretty sure it’s fine but check first). The only other thing that got me through was curry!

Xmassprout · 01/01/2021 02:32

Can you use a saline nose spray? I find they help when I'm a snotty mess

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 01/01/2021 02:54

Add some ginger to the honey and lemon

HotButteredRumPaPumPum · 01/01/2021 12:11

I took a multivitamin all the way through and for the 1st year in my life didnt catch a single cold.
You could put a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil on a tissue and hold it to your nose. That way it wont affect the pets.
