Positive COVID test

ruby4ever · 31/12/2020 14:32

So my sisters bil and family have all been tested positive for covid, they live in a flat, they are now isolating. All of them have fever, loss of taste smell, body aches and a cough

They needed some essentials, so his db took them over, bil then came out of his flat, down from the 5th floor, to the communal door to take the shopping in.
Aibu in thinking he shouldn't have came out of his flat at all?? Surely that's what isolation would
Mean not coming out of ones home. Isn't that how it spreads. No doubt he would've touched things along the way, no mask worn, how is that fair on the people that live in that building.
His db didn't want to go inside the building and drop it off at the door as he fears many people living there could be carrying all sorts and so didn't want to risk going inside as he has family of his own and left it outside the building.
And now that I think of it, I reckon a lot of people who live in flats (not ALL) must do this and no wonder we are unable to contain the virus.

Sounds ok to me.

WidowTwonky · 31/12/2020 14:35

What would you have suggested instead OP?

ZigZaggyZoo · 31/12/2020 14:36

Would you rather they starved? He should've worn a mask & ideally gloves too but unless he's hosting a communal party in the corridor, he's unlikely to cause people to catch it by simply collecting his shopping from the door.

shouldistop · 31/12/2020 14:36

I really doubt that's a big cause of spread

Needahug72 · 31/12/2020 14:36

So how was he supposed to get the shopping??

Agree he should of worn a mask but if his db didn’t want to take it up too the flat?

I think in most situations people would take it to the flat door, after all there is no higher a risk going into a block of flats (but not an actual flat) than there is going to the supermarket to do the shopping in the first place!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/12/2020 14:37

What was he supposed to do if DB didn't want to go in (which is understandable)? Yes, he could have worn mask, but if he was careful not to meet anyone, then he did nothing wrong basically.

Xmassprout · 31/12/2020 14:37

Thats why people should be washing their hands frequently and not touching their faces.

If you touch a contaminated surface, you don't instantly become infected. The virus has to find a route into your body. So if you don't touch your face and you're washing your hands regularly, then there is still minimal risk from contaminated surfaces

Frlrlrubert · 31/12/2020 14:38

Your sisters husband should have taken the stuff to their flat door. But what else could they do given he refused, throw down a rope? Probably should have worn a mask though.

It should be obvious that people at higher housing densities will be more likely to catch it through shared amenities, doors, etc. This is probably one reason that deprivation is a factor in the risk of catching it.

MistletoeandGin · 31/12/2020 14:38

So if the DB didn’t want to go upstairs, how do you suggest he got his food?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 31/12/2020 14:40

They should tie a basket to a rope and lower it down from the window next time😂
I think that's the only viable-ish solution

ruby4ever · 31/12/2020 21:02

@SchrodingersImmigrant 😂

He should've worn mask and glove. Or told a neighbour to get his essential and leave outside his door

I live in a flat, deliveries are always to the building (like tesco etc), not the door to the individual flat.

How do you expect us to collect deliveries from the main entrance?

Why would people who live in flats “be carrying all sorts”?

WanderingMilly · 31/12/2020 21:10

I would have expected him to have worn a mask and gloves, assuming there was no other way of getting someone to bring the things up.

I am amazed that hardly any people don't wear gloves, it's the best way to stop spreading germs to surfaces or picking up germs from surfaces...you still need to wash hands and sanitise afterwards but so much safer.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 31/12/2020 21:17

So the brother didn’t want to go through the front door, but the BIL shouldn’t have left his flat. Were the supplies to levitate up the stairs?

Or should the BIL waited until his hair grew long enough to plait and let down Rapunzel-style?

Imiss2019 · 31/12/2020 21:22

Unless you’re changing your gloves after each surface contact it does nothing to stop the spread. Hate seeing shop assistants wearing them at the tills as they don’t change them between customers so totally pointless

RelightMyPfizer · 31/12/2020 21:25

Your db should have used a drone to deliver - he is the one who failed to follow regulation 4872.

That is a category 7 covid failure. he should expect a £200 from the relevant authorities.

How is wearing gloves different to just washing hands? Not being an arse, it’s a genuine question. Unless you change your gloves after everything you touch?

SimonJT · 31/12/2020 21:54

Wearing gloves really isn’t safer, people who wear gloves are less likely to take risks as the gloves touch surfaces rather than their own skin.
Bluebell246 · 31/12/2020 21:59

What has this got to do with you OP? Why are people so obsessed with what other people are doing? Does it give you some kind of virtuous glow to know that you are a better, more compliant person? FFS. Leave them alone.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 31/12/2020 22:06

If he didn't pass stop and have a chat with anyone on the stairs/corridor, not having a mask on wouldn't have made that much difference.

But you're right OP, leaving the box of emergency groceries on the street outside the flat would definitely be the safest Hmm

Brunt0n · 31/12/2020 22:09

I can’t imagine how pathetically dull my life would have to be to care about something like this. And it’s pretty pathetically dull right now

Dailyhandtowelwash · 31/12/2020 22:17

How mean of his brother not to take it to his door.

WorriedAboutAirQuality · 31/12/2020 22:17

I live in a flat. Deliveries are brought to our actual flat door. If I was self isolating I would not go into the communal areas of our building, at all. His DB should definitely have left the delivery at his actual door. However, it’s nonsense to suggest that this type of scenario is what is fuelling the spread of covid.

How do you “tell” a neighbour to shop for you? If a neighbour tried to order me around I rather doubt that I would be jumping to obey.

SeasonFinale · 31/12/2020 22:30

well perhaps as it is so important to you next time you can volunteer to do it
